The 2Tone Story

THE 2TONE STORY (320kbs-m4a/129mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 25th August 2019

Dave Marshall Barrett looks at how the likes of The Specials and The Selecter put Coventry on the musical map. He chats to all the members of the 2Tone movement, revisiting the places and the people who lived through the birth of a musical phenomenon.

They share stories about the early gigs, the creation of the front cover of The Selecter’s single made up from cuttings carefully placed then knocked out of place from Jerry’s dog! They talk about how the band got their name; the good times and heartbreakingly, the bad times.

It was a break up at the height of their fame – when arguably their biggest hit GhostTown was at the top of the charts – that they split. Their original line ups were never to be again. Despite efforts for reunions over the years. The Specials and The Selecter both perform without their founding members Jerry Dammers (The Specials) and Neol Davies (The Selecter).

The Specials (now just Terry Hall, Lynval Golding and Horace Panter) have come back this year with a brand new album Encore – it entered the album charts at number 1 earlier this year 40 years on from them forming.
