Alexis Korner - Rhythm And Blues Champion - 3. A New Generation Of Blues

ALEXIS KORNER - RHYTHM AND BLUES CHAMPION - 3. A NEW GENERATION OF BLUES (320kbs-m4a/62mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 23rd May 2019

In this third and final part, Chris Jagger tells the story of Alexis Korner's continuing influence on British music in the late 60s and beyond.

With his band Blues Incorporated and The Ealing Club, Alexis had mentored many of the stars of British R'n'B, including Mick Jagger, Keith Richard, and Eric Burden but his own career had not taken off in the same way.

Nevertheless he continued to support and recruit a new generation of blues talent. He recorded with Robert Plant and, when the call came, advised him to join Jimmy Page in Led Zeppelin. He also helped Andy Fraser and Paul Rodgers of Free, bringing them on tour with him and even naming the band. He also became a respected champion of the music with his BBC radio shows, including one where he jammed with Jimi Hendrix.

But his biggest commercial success was just around the corner. He worked with the producer Mickie Most and composer John Cameron on an unlikely rock big band album. It became CCS and became a hit album with hit singles like Tap Turns On The Water and the Zeppelin cover Whole Lotta Love, which was to become the Top of the Pops theme tune for many years.

This episode features contributions from Andy Fraser, John Cameron, Charlie Watts, Mark Lamarr and others.

First broadcast in 2008.

ALEXIS KORNER - RHYTHM AND BLUES CHAMPION - 2. THE EALING CLUB (320kbs-m4a/62mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 22nd May 2019

Chris Jagger continues to celebrate the work of broadcaster and bandleader Alexis Korner and the British blues scene he pioneered.

The second episode tells the story of Alexis' part in the burgeoning early 60s rhythm and blues scene and The Ealing Club, a small murky cellar underneath the ABC Tea Rooms complete with tarpaulins over the drum stand to catch the condensation dripping from the ceiling. It was this unprepossessing venue that became the crucible of British rock.

Alexis formed the ultimate supergroup to play there, Blues Incorporated, only it was before any of the stars were famous. At various points, the Ealing Club's stage held Eric Burden, Paul Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Eric Clapton, Graham Bond, Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and many others. The club became the place where future blues and rock musicians got their musical education.

We hear from many of those who went there, including Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger and Paul Jones. And hear stories including the night Mick Jagger was dropped from Alexis' first BBC session and went on to form the Rolling Stones.

First broadcast in 2008.

Alexis Korner - Rhythm And Blues Champion - 1. Juvenile Delinquent

ALEXIS KORNER - RHYTHM AND BLUES CHAMPION - 1. JUVENILE DELINQUENT (320kbs-m4a/62mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 21st May 2019

Chris Jagger showcases the work of broadcaster and bandleader Alexis Korner and the British blues scene he pioneered.

A father figure of British blues, Alexis was the catalyst for the British Blues explosion of the 60s. As Keith Richards puts it, without Alexis there wouldn't have been the Rolling Stones. But his influence goes deeper than one band. Without Alexis there may not have been Led Zeppelin, Free, The Animals and many others. And the careers of many British musicians including Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Graham Bond and even Eric Clapton would have started differently.

Chris Jagger, the younger brother of Mick and accomplished musician himself, talks to many of those whom Alexis influenced and played with, including Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Andy Fraser (Free), Chris Barber, Zoot Money, Paul Jones, Danny Thompson and Big Jim Sullivan.

Episode one looks at Alexis' early life. His family background was complex. As he said "I'm part Turk, part Greek, part Austrian and as I don't know any part Turk part Greek part Austrian music, I feel particularly entitled to play the blues".

He became part of the early blues and skiffle scene in the exotic dives of Soho during the early 50s, playing in the bands of Chris Barber and Ken Colyer while championing and befriending the American Blues masters on their early trips to the UK.

Alexis takes a new direction in adopting the raucous Chicago blues sound of Muddy Waters. Though the electric guitars meet opposition in some parts, he begins to build a new audience through his new band Blues Incorporated and he founds what was to become the crucible of British rock, The Ealing Club.

First broadcast on Radio 2 in 2008.

How I Stopped Worrying And Learned To Love My Albatross

HOW I STOPPED WORRYING AND LEARNED TO LOVE MY ALBATROSS (320kbs-m4a/65mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 2nd April 2019

Music writer Pete Paphides runs through the 5 stages of grief following a huge hit record with stories from some of those who know including Mike Batt, Ralph McTell, Colin Vearncombe, Ivan Doroschuk and Sandie Shaw.

Many artists are best known for doing something - be it a hit, or an album or for having an intense, sustained period of success that is hard to maintain in the long-run. In the case of Ralph McTell it's the song 'Streets of London', for Ivan Doroschuk from Men Without Hats it's 'The Safety Dance', for Mike Batt, a prolific songwriter and producer, his Womble years are often remembered first, Sandie Shaw has never been able to forget 'Puppet on a String' and Colin Vearncombe's band Black's albatross track was Wonderful Life.

The five stages a musician goes through of dealing with their albatross are uncannily similar to the five stages of grief that follow bereavement or news of a terminal illness. These were identified by psychiatrist Elizabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book On Death & Dying (they also form the narrative arc of Bill Murray's character in Groundhog Day). They include denial, bargaining, anger, depression and finally acceptance.

How I Stopped Worrying And Learned To Love My Albatross walks through these five stages, with lots of testimony from people who have been through all the different points in the curve of self-realisation - punctuated, of course, with lots of clips of all their great songs.

COSEY FANNI TUTTI - LATE JUNCTION MIXTAPE 29.05.19 (320kbs-m4a/66mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 29th May 2019

Max Reinhardt hosts, with an exclusive mixtape from legendary performance artist and avant-garde musician Cosey Fanni Tutti. She has a thirty-minute window in the programme to set the mood music, with selections including Coil, Gazelle Twin, and Jefferson Airplane.

Born in Hull in 1951, Cosey Fanni Tutti began her career there in 1969, appearing in art performances, mail art exhibitions, and musical improvisations. In the seventies she brought her experience of sex magazines and films, glamour modelling, and striptease into her performance art. Her infamous exhibition 'Prostitution' at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, 1976 prompted walkouts and provoked debate in parliament. The same year, Cosey founded influential industrial music group Throbbing Gristle with Genesis P-Orridge, Peter Christopherson and Chris Carter, who is Cosey’s partner and lifetime collaborator.

Cosey Fanni Tutti’s continuing individual art and music practice takes its place alongside her work with Carter, the enduring, evolving legacy of Throbbing Gristle.

An all-star Ian Fleming James Bond adventure, directed by Martin Jarvis and starring Toby Stephens as 007.

James Bond is sent undercover by MI6 to New York to follow the pipeline. Masquerading as a courier he meets enticing, ice-cold, Tiffany Case. Music Extra - New York City's Pirates Of The Air

MUSIC EXTRA - NEW YORK CITY'S PIRATES OF THE AIR (96kbs-m4a/35mb/50mins)
BBC World Service broadcast: 13th April 2019

As the workday winds down across New York, you can tune in to a clandestine world of unlicensed radio stations; a cacophonous sonic wonder of the city. As listeners begin to arrive home, dozens of secret transmitters switch on from rooftops in immigrant enclaves. These stations are often called ‘pirates’ for their practice of commandeering an already licensed frequency.

These rogue stations evade detection and take to the air, blanketing their neighbourhoods with the sounds of ancestral lands blending into a new home. They broadcast music and messages to diverse communities – whether from Latin America or the Caribbean, to born-again Christians and Orthodox Jews.

Reporter David Goren has long followed these stations from his Brooklyn home. He paints an audio portrait of their world, drawn from the culture of the street. Vivid soundscapes emerge from tangled clouds of invisible signals, nurturing immigrant communities struggling for a foothold in the big city.

Jamaica: The Harder They Come - 2. Legacy

JAMAICA: THE HARDER THEY COME - 2. LEGACY (320kbs-m4a/64mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 23rd April 2019

Writer Chris Salewicz revisits Jamaica 40 years since the premiere of the cult film The Harder They Come and talks to the musicians who were directly inspired into a life of crime by the film.

In the second and final part of his investigation, Chris asks why so many Jamaican musicians have associations with criminality, how Kingston's gun culture began and when politicians carved up downtown Kingston. Former Met Police officer Mark Shields and community worker Pastor Bobby Wilmott of Trenchtown talk about the reality of everyday life there.

Back in Britain, Chris examines the legacy of Jamaica's music and culture on today's youth in the form of reggae's cultural descendant, Bass Culture, which to many eyes glorifies the 'Badman' archetype portrayed in The Harder They Come. Grime MC Flowdan, reggae singer Tappa Zukie, Jimmy Cliff, and black music historian Mykaell Riley all contribute.

Jamaica: The Harder They Come - 1. Influence

JAMAICA: THE HARDER THEY COME - 1. INFLUENCE (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 22nd April 2019

Writer Chris Salewicz's two-part exploration of the cult film 'The Harder They Come' as he considers its legacy. He meets the film's stars and those who have been touched by this classic of modern cinema and its soundtrack.

Released in British cinemas in 1973, The Harder They Come is the rite of passage story of Ivan, a young singer trying to break into the music industry. Portrayed by the ever-smiling Jimmy Cliff, the film contains great music and unforgettable scenes of sun-bleached Jamaica. Yet there is a dark heart to the film. Despite his considerable vocal talents, Ivan goes astray and becomes tragically entwined in the criminal underworld.

For British cinema-goers it was their first insight into Kingston's seductive ghetto life, with a far-reaching influence on fashion and music. Before Bob Marley, it was The Harder They Come which launched reggae culture onto the world stage.

Contributors include Jimmy Cliff, discussing real-life gunman, Ryegin, who terrorised Kingston in 1948 and became the inspiration for the lead role. Chappy St Juste, cameraman on the film recalls shooting some memorable scenes, and Sally Henzell, widow of director Perry Henzel, talks about the film's premiere at Kingston's Carib cinema where 40,000 people tried to get in to the 1500 seater auditorium. Carl Bradshaw, who plays Jose, gives us a tour of the film's locations and author Matthew Parker contextualises Jamaica's history as a violent slave outpost "bathed in blood".

Leo Tolstoy - War And Peace - 10. Episode 10

LEO TOLSTOY - WAR AND PEACE - 10. EPISODE 10 (320kbs-m4a/131mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 3rd May 2019

In this concluding episode, Pierre recalls his time in the barracks – a surprisingly happy time where he meets a prisoner, Platon Karateev. Kutuzov reluctantly leads the Battle of Tarutino, a Russian victory by a series of accidents.

Meanwhile, Sonya is left little choice but to return her promise to Nikolai so that he can marry his true love, Marya. Countess Rostov receives shocking news and Natasha is still suffering from the death of her beloved Prince Andrei. Kutuzov is called upon once again by the Emperor, this time to 'save Europe'. What will be the General's ultimate decision for Russia?

A dynamic fresh dramatisation by Timberlake Wertenbaker of Leo Tolstoy's epic - from the translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokonsky - follows the fortunes of three Russian aristocratic families during the Napoleonic War. Starring Lesley Manville, John Hurt, Alun Armstrong and Harriet Walter

The story moves between their past and present as Pierre, Natasha, Marya and Nikolai talk to their children about the events that shaped their lives and the lives of every Russian who lived through these troubled times.

War and Peace reflects the panorama of life at every level of Russian society in this period. The longest of 19th-century novels, it's an epic story in which historical, social, ethical and religious issues are explored on a scale never before attempted in fiction. From this, Timberlake Wertenbaker has created a riveting radio dramatisation in ten episodes.

Petya, the youngest child of the Rostovs also wants to join the army much to the horror and worry of the Countess.

Meanwhile, Pierre is convinced that he is on a mission to single-handedly save Russia from Napoleon, while his own feelings towards Natasha could be something more than just those of a concerned 'guardian'. As the war continues to spread across Russia, Prince Bolkonsky and Marya are warned by Andrei that troops could be drawing closer to their home near Smolensk. The news is too much for the old Prince.
