The Honest Musician's Fear Of Accidental Plagiarism

THE HONEST MUSICIAN'S FEAR OF ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 3rd March 2020

Many musicians have found themselves accused of stealing from another artist. It's every songwriter's biggest fear - that really great phrase or lyric you thought was all your own creation turns up in another song.

There are few musicians who would admit to stealing even if caught red handed, but what happens if the theft was unintentional? And what if you heard lines from one of your songs in someone else's work? Would you immediately reach for the lawyers phone number or would you let it go without complaint if the offending writer 'fessed up? Musicians assimilate what is around them and even the finest tunesmiths derive inspiration by drawing on and re-adapting existing popular music. So is any song really original?

As Noel Gallagher put it rather bluntly when confronted about his musical influences: "There's twelve notes in a scale and 36 chords and that's the end of it. All the configurations have been done before."

Singer and songwriter Guy Garvey, with the help of fellow songwriters Sir Tim Rice, Paul Heaton and John Bramwell, explores the legal pitfalls that can befall the honest musician and how to avoid them.

Producer: Cecile Wright

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2011.

Rocking The Blitz Club

ROCKING THE BLITZ CLUB (320kbs-m4a/65mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 24th February 2020

Midge Ure takes us back to the Blitz Club in London's Covent Garden where the 'New Romantics' came of age.

The club first opened its doors in 1979 at the height of another recession and Midge explores how the flamboyant Blitz scene offered an escape from the hard economic reality that he and his contemporaries were facing.

Midge remembers how "walking into the Blitz was like stepping out of time, you never knew what period it was set in. It was a total mish-mash of styles, full of blurred genders and make-up for girls and boys". The Blitz crowd were christened the 'New Romantics' because of what Midge calls their "nostalgia for the future".

The Blitz was a seedbed for creative talent, full of musicians, designers, photographers and stylists. John Galliano first flaunted his ideas there, Spandau Ballet played their early gigs and a young Boy George took the coats.

A new sound emerged from the club - the synthesizer-based electropop pioneered by Midge in his bands Visage and Ultravox. The success of the Blitz bands brought wealth and fame, but the "extreme hedonism" of the 'New Romantic' movement led many into very dark places.

Finally, Midge explores why the 1980s 'New Romantic' synth sound has seen a revival in the current recession.

Midge meets former Blitz Kids including: Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet), Gary Numan, Robert Elms, Rusty Egan, Steve Strange (Visage), Stephen Jones (milliner) and Dylan Jones, to revisit what was undoubtedly a golden era of British pop music.

Producer: Melissa FitzGerald

One Better Day With David Rowntree

ONE BETTER DAY WITH DAVID ROWNTREE (320kbs-m4a/263mb/1hr54mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 23rd February 2020

Until the dawn of the 19th century, what we now know as Camden Town was at best a few grubby houses along the River Fleet.

In 1791 the owner, Charles Pratt, 1st Earl of Camden (a man so interesting, he probably merits his own Netflix series) decided to build a leafy residential neighbourhood. However it wasn’t until the arrival of the Regent’s Canal in 1820, then the railways in 1830 that the area really started to change.

It was a time of mass mobilisation of manual labour. The work involved in digging a canal or laying a railway by hand is astonishing, and a huge influx of foreign workers, notably from Ireland, arrived to help.

Many passed through the area, and Camden became, and remains to this day, a centre of the Irish community in London. Hostels sprung up to house the itinerant labourers – the best known being Arlington House in Arlington Road, made famous by Madness in their song One Better Day.

And of course, being an Irish community, pubs sprung up by the barrel load. Camden had pubs on every corner. Outside Central London, Camden still has the highest density of pubs in the country. What’s more they were Irish pubs, so they had stages for music…

With so many places to play, it’s no surprise that, from the birth of pop music in the 1960s, Camden has always been a key part of the London live music scene.

Dingwalls, the now famous venue and bar, started out life as the wharf at the heart of the Piano business which also dominated the area.

Crucially for David Rowntree - at some point in the 1990s Camden Town became the absolute epicentre of the UK music industry, so its pubs, markets and record labels because famous across the world. Then the fashion changed, and the world moved on.

David will look at the history of the area with authors and writers and talk to his friends and colleagues from the Britpop moment in musical history, as they were the people who were actually there, sometimes enjoying rivalry and friendship simultaneously. The different tribes making, watching and buying the music came from all over the country (and indeed the world) with one destination in mind – Camden.

Lights, Camera, Inaction: An Existential Guide To The Movies

LIGHTS, CAMERA, INACTION: AN EXISTENTIAL GUIDE TO THE MOVIES (320kbs-m4a/128mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 21st March 2020

From Woody Allen to the Truman Show via Groundhog Day and Taxi Driver; Matthew Sweet examines the many and varied ways that cinema communicates existentialist ideas. Both in ways we expect and in ways that we don't (step forward Bridget Jones).

Cinema is very good at explaining Existentialism and capturing its various moods and feelings; but its deeper than that. The language of existentialism with its heroes, choices and crises sounds suspiciously like the language of screenwriting. They are, after all, both ways of trying to create meaning and narrative out of nothing. The blank page that confronts a screenwriter confronts all of us as we decide how to live. As Jean Paul Sartre, Simone De Beauvoir and Albert Camus would tell us - the blank page is us; the film of our lives is waiting to be made.

Films included in the program:

The Music Box (1932) directed by James Parrott, produced by Hal Roach

Groundhog Day (1993) directed by Harold Ramis; produced by Harold Ramis and ‎Trevor Albert

Play it Again Sam ((19792) directed by Herbert Poss; produced by Arthur P Jacobs.

Love and Death (1975) directed by Woody Allen; produced by Charles H Joffe

Bridget Jones Diary (2001) directed by Sharon Maguire; Produced by Tim Bevan, Jonathan Cavendish and Eric Fellner.

Casablanca (1943) directed by Michael Curtiz; produced by Hal B. Wallis

Archive On 4: The Art Of The Lyricist

ARCHIVE ON 4: THE ART OF THE LYRICIST (320kbs-m4a/130mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 7th March 2020

In a programme first broadcast in 2016 to mark the 60th anniversary of the musical "My Fair Lady", the actor and singer Clarke Peters explores the career and legacy of its lyricist Alan Jay Lerner and investigates the art of lyricists in general through the BBC archive.

Alan Jay Lerner often said that he sweated for weeks to write a lyric for a song. His words highlighted the struggle that he and the other legendary wordsmiths of musical theatre had as they sought to hone the right words to fit their collaborator's music - words which would sometimes translate into the vernacular and speech of generations afterwards - expressions like "Get me to the Church on Time" (Lerner) or "Everything's Coming Up Roses" (Sondheim).

The programme explores the art of Alan Jay Lerner and the other musical theatre lyricists which fill the BBC archives. Many of the songwriting greats are there - Yip Harburg, writer of "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?", Dorothy Fields (lyric writer of the hit show "Sweet Charity") and the great Oscar Hammerstein. There are there are the artists who delivered both words and music - including Irving Berlin and Stephen Sondheim. And there are the surprises- figures like PG. Wodehouse who, as well as writing the famous "Jeeves" books, also wrote lyrics for musical theatre.

There are also new interviews with the lyricist Charles Hart (writer of words for "Phantom of the Opera" and more recently "Bend it like Beckham"), Millie Taylor, Professor of Musical Theatre at Winchester University and Alan Jay Lerner expert Dominic McHugh.

Clarke Peters who's sung in many musicals and written the book for "Five Guys Named Moe" presents this journey of crafting the words for the perfect musical theatre song. He explores the pleasures and pitfalls of a lyricist's life and, in the company of Lerner and many others, takes the listener through from first thought to the opening night.

ARCHIVE ON 4: EVERYONE'S A STAR (320kbs-m4a/128mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 22nd February 2020

YouTube is a cultural behemoth. It's the second biggest website on the internet after Google and is watched by people across the world for over a billion hours a day. But what effect is it having on us as individuals, and on our society?

Tech journalist Chris Stokel-Walker charts the video sharing website's rise from an idea in a computer engineering student’s bedroom to a platform with a reach far greater than the BBC and all other television networks put together.

Chris meets one of the internet’s original vloggers, talks to an early YouTube celebrity and finds out what it’s like to become famous on YouTube in 2020. He also explores the dark side of the website. In the past 18 months, YouTube has been accused of driving political extremism and giving credence to conspiracy theories and fake news.

How did one simple design decision taken by higher ups at the company help fuel those accusations? Chris talks to an ex-YouTube insider who helped build the algorithm that lies at the centre of that decision.

We hear from an American teenager who says watching videos on the website was the reason he became a far-right radical. And we talk to an academic whose research helped uncover a shocking and terrible secret that forced YouTube to reckon with its fiercest critics.

Archive On 4: Soho!

ARCHIVE ON 4: SOHO! (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 14th February 2020

The singer Suggs returns to London's Soho, where he spent much of his unconventional childhood and where his jazz singer mother still lives.

He was introduced to the delights of the Colony Club as a six-year-old, and as a musician he continued to haunt the district.

Recording on location and mining the BBC archive, Suggs investigates how this unique community, complete with red-light district and village school, functions today, and whether it is still, or indeed ever was, a source of inspiration or merely a creative vacuum.

For decades, Soho was regarded as Britain's capital of sleaze and vice, but also a place where artists, writers, musicians and actors came to drink and philosophise. Tales of the area and its inhabitants abound, from painter Francis Bacon and George Melly at Muriel Belcher's infamous Colony Club to Jeffrey Bernard and Keith Waterhouse at the Coach and Horses and Dylan Thomas at The French House.

Soho was the birthplace of British pop, with the skifflers, jazzers and early rock 'n' rollers all making their names in the coffee bars of the 1950s. It was also the home of refugees of every type, including political dissidents, foreigners and homosexuals, from Casanova to Karl Marx, and Quentin Crisp to George Melly.

Yet in the 1950s, a new phrase was coined: 'Soho-itis'. It was said that if you enter Soho you will never get any work done, and you will never, ever leave. Many books, poems, songs and indeed careers were washed away with drink, but some artists, musicians and writers did survive the late nights, the fights and the booze, and took great inspiration from the place.

Sound And Vision - PJ Harvey And Seamus Murphy

SOUND AND VISION - PJ HARVEY AND SEAMUS MURPHY (320kbs-m4a/129mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 3rd November 2019

Miranda Sawyer is joined by PJ Harvey and Seamus Murphy to talk about their new film A Dog Called Money, a uniquely intimate journey through the inspiration, writing and recording of a PJ Harvey record.

Writer and musician Polly Harvey and award-winning photographer Seamus Murphy, hatched a collaboration. Seeking first-hand experience of the countries she wanted to write about, Harvey accompanied Murphy on some of his worldwide reporting trips, joining him in Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Washington DC. Harvey collected words, Murphy collected images. Back home, the words become poems, songs, then an album, which is recorded in an unprecedented art experiment in Somerset House, London. In a specially constructed room behind one-way glass, the public - all cameras surrendered - are invited to watch the 5 week process as a live sound-sculpture.

Murphy exclusively documents the experiment with the same forensic vision and private access as their travels. By capturing the immediacy of their encounters with the people and places.
