Soulwax - Christmas Mix

SOULWAX - CHRISTMAS MIX (320kbs-m4a/49mb/21mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 22nd December 2017

It's Lauren's last show of 2017, so we mark the occasion with some favourite tunes and a festive mix from Soulwax. We're calling it "Soulwaxmas".

Since the creation of Soulwax in 1995, David and Stephen Dewaele have consistently pushed the boundaries into new and innovative territory. In addition to Soulwax, the brothers continue to tour the globe as 2manydjs, have their DEEWEE record label and studio, Radio Soulwax - a visual radio station and app, and the Despacio project with James Murphy.

Their last album, FROM DEEWEE, was recorded with their band in one take at their studio in Ghent, Belgium. They played in session for 6 Music at Maida Vale earlier this year and, of late, we've been thoroughly enjoying the beat-filled beast of a track that is Is It Always Binary?

The Soulwax brothers follow in the footsteps of The Chemical Brothers, who shared their Ghosts Of Christmas Past, Present and Future mix in 2015.

A Brief History Of Christmas Songs

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHRISTMAS SONGS (320kbs-m4a/134mb/59mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 17th December 2017

Chris Hawkins presents 'A Brief History of Christmas Songs', telling the stories behind a selection of the greatest Christmas songs of all time.

In this hour long special, you can hear the best selling Christmas song in history; songs that were never intended to be festive tunes and how watching football inspired a huge Christmas hit in the 80s.

This perfect Christmas soundtrack features BBC archive interviews with Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Greg Lake, Jona Lewie, Noddy Holder, Chrissie Hynde, Roy Wood, Noddy Holder, George Michael, Shane McGowan and Kirsty MacColl.

Each of the artists reveals how their Christmas song came about. Bing Crosby describes the first time Irving Berlin, who wrote White Christmas, played it to him. Berlin described it as "a nice little song, an amusing little number" and according to Andy Williams, "When Bing heard it for the first time, he took his pipe out of his mouth and said to Irving Berlin, this one you don't have to worry about". It has since sold 150 million copes.

With additional music from Judy Garland and a rare recording by Rod Stewart, Chris Hawkins presents 60 minutes of unbridled Christmas joy.

THE RECORD PRODUCERS - ROY WOOD - 2. EPISODE 2 (320kbs-m4a/138mb/60mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 26th December 2016

Richard Allinson and Steve Levine continue their look at the work of a man who has achieved the rare feat of having Top 10 singles with three different groups and as a solo artist whose contribution to British pop music has been undervalued - Roy Wood.

Following a Denny Cordell-produced debut album by the Move, Roy took over the controls for the rest of the group's career, then went on to form Electric Light Orchestra with Jeff Lynne and produce a stunning debut single '10538 Overture' before leaving to write and produce a string of hits with his new band Wizzard. At the same time, he was writing and recording as a solo artist, giving him a further four hit singles and an acclaimed debut album 'Boulders'.

This extended version of the Radio 2 documentary concentrates on his work during this period, but also contains some of his production work for others, such as the 'Annie In Wonderland' album by Renaissance singer Annie Haslam.

The programme features interviews with Roy, Jeff Lynne, Alan Parsons, Annie Haslam and others, along with an in-depth look at the original multi-track recordings of '10538 Overture' by ELO, Wizzard's number one 'Angel Fingers', Roy's Top 10 solo hit 'Forever', one of the oldest surviving recordings of a Roy Wood song, and an analysis of 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday'.
