Archive On 4: The Devil's Horn

ARCHIVE ON 4: THE DEVIL'S HORN (320kbs-m4a/131mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 21st January 2018

The saxophone is the most important musical invention of the last 170 years. Lauded for its adventurous sound, its sensuality and seemingly never-ending versatility, the brass woodwind horn has become one of the most popular instruments in the world. Today, it's at home in classical music as it is in pop with hundreds of famous composers writing significant pieces for its shapely curves. Neither of these musical homes compare to its place in jazz, where its presence is so influential it's hard to think of another instrument more associated with the genre.

But for some the sax produces a devilish sound, whether that's down to taste or decency. It's been shunned by polite society, banished from orchestras and even denounced by governments. Much worse, in recent times it has been accused of blandness and crowned the king of elevator music.

British jazz musician Soweto Kinch examines the saxophone's place in history in Radio 4's Archive on 4. An alto player himself, Kinch investigates the instrument's captivating and somewhat turbulent journey through musical and spoken archive. Aiding Soweto with expert analysis are his friend and fellow sax player Courtney Pine, leading classical saxophonist Amy Dickson, historian Dr Paul Cohen, director of the 2012 World Saxophone Congress Richard Ingham and comedian David Quantick.

Lenny Henry On Richard Pryor: The Making Of A Satirist

LENNY HENRY ON RICHARD PRYOR: THE MAKING OF A SATIRIST (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 23rd December 2017

Lenny Henry retraces the late comedian Richard Pryor's seven month stay in Berkeley, California - a crucial moment in his artistic development.

Richard Pryor is often hailed as the greatest stand up comedian of all time. For Lenny Henry, it was Pryor's fearless act in the mid 70s and 80s that inspired him as a young comic. And he remains Lenny's comedy hero to this day.

But the Richard Pryor that Lenny knows and loves had a very different act when he first started out in 1960s New York. A self-confessed Bill Cosby clone, charming audiences with his 'white bread' humour.

It's the stuff of legend how Pryor's biting social satires, salty language, and character-driven routines like The Wino and The Junkie came about after he threw away a lucrative job in Las Vegas and vowed to reinvent himself. But, for Lenny, the key to Pryor's artistic transformation lies in his short stay in Berkeley, California. When he arrived in February 1971, revolution was in the air. A hub for American counterculture, there were pitched battles in the streets between activists and the police. Berkeley was also home to the Black Panthers and a burgeoning black arts movement.

Pryor made friends with a local radio producer who invited him on to the local station KPFA, gave him a recorder so he could brainstorm new material, and taped several of his performances around town. With these little-heard tapes, Lenny pieces Pryor's life together during his self-imposed exile. Pryor immersed himself in black history and culture, hanging out with intellectuals like Ishmael Reed and Cecil Brown. For the first time, Pryor was taken seriously as an artist and we get a fascinating glimpse him recording free verse poetry. We also hear Pryor experimenting with edgier material at local clubs. For example, we hear blistering attacks on police brutality and his response to the 1971 Attica prison rebellion - which sound remarkably modern even today.

Contributors include: Novelist and poet, Ishmael Reed
Former poet laureate of California, Al Young
Richard's widow and keeper of his archives, Jennifer Pryor
Comedian and director, David Steinberg
Actress and comedian, Liz Torres
Author of Becoming Richard Pryor, Scott Saul

Producer: Victoria Ferran

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 14th December 2017

Blur guitarist and solo artist Graham Coxon discusses his key musical moments with Matt Everitt.

Graham chats about meeting Damon, Alex and Dave for the first time and the incredibly chaotic early days of Blur before There's No Other Way made them into popstars.

He discusses his difficulties in dealing with the tabloid attention and fame that followed the success of Parklife, and his own battles overcoming alcohol addiction. He also talks frankly about his clearly painful exit from Blur and his happy reunion with the band.

His fascinating solo career also gets covered, as his music evolves from low-fi garage rock, to jagged punk and from pastoral acoustic folk to upbeat indie pop hit singles.

It's a revealing and honest look at the musical life of Blur's experimental heart and - in the words of Noel Gallagher - "The greatest guitarist of his generation".

ANANSI BOYS: EPISODE 1 (320kbs-m4a/65mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 25th December 2017

'Stories are Webs. They are connected strand to strand....'

Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys comes to Radio 4, with a stellar cast, and a specially commissioned song written and performed by Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones's Grey Worm) who makes his radio debut as Fat Charlie Nancy, a South London boy whose dad is trouble. And not just your standard, run of the mill kind of trouble: more like, your trickster God and master of mischief and storytelling kind of trouble.

Anansi Boys is a story of love, laughter, music and murder, old gods and new tricks, that takes Fat Charlie from his home in London to Florida, the Caribbean, and the very Beginning of the World itself. Or the End of the World. Depending on which direction you're coming from.

Jacob Anderson is a musician (as Raleigh Ritchie) as well as an actor. Starring as Fat Charlie, a young man who struggles to find his voice, he has also written and performed a specially commissioned song - Charlie's Song - which forms part of the magical fabric of Anansi Boys.

This is Dirk Maggs's fifth adaptation of a Neil Gaiman novel for Radio 4, and Neil Gaiman's favourite so far.

The League Of Gentlemen Night

THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN NIGHT (320kbs-m4a/411mb/3hrs)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 16th December 2017

"You'll Never Leave..."

Reece Shearsmith presents a 3 hour League-fest of the acclaimed black comedy that began on BBC radio before transferring to BBC TV.

From his dressing room in the heart of London's theatreland, Reece looks back on the cult show he created with Steve Pemberton, Mark Gatiss and Jeremy Dyson.

From its origins as an award-winning stage show through to its debut on radio, hear how the League's humour was developed from awkward social situations.

Originally set in the grimy, remote northern town of Spent, Reece goes on to explain the initial thrill of transferring the characters to the small screen - when the setting was changed to the town of Royston Vasey.

The League ran for three series on BBC2, with more stage shows, a feature film - and the team reuniting on TV for their 20th anniversary in 2017.

Reece introduces the BBC Radio 4 series of 'On The Town With The League of Gentlemen' produced by Sarah Smith.

Benjamin Denton arrives for a visit to his Uncle Harvey and Auntie Val - in a town of oddball characters, including shopkeeper Mr Ingleby, taxi-driver Barbara, pen-loving Pauline at the Job centre, Mickey, Dr Chinnery and many more...

Good Omens: Episode 6

GOOD OMENS: EPISODE 6 (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 30th December 2017

Events have been set in motion to bring about the End of Days. The armies of Good and Evil are gathering and making their way towards the sleepy English village of Lower Tadfield. The Four Horsepersons of the Apocalypse - War, Famine, Pollution and Death - have been summoned from the corners of the earth and are assembling.

Witchfinder Sergeant Shadwell and his assistant Newton Pulsifier are also en route to Tadfield to investigate some unusual phenomena in the area, while Anathema Device, descendent of prophetess and witch Agnes Nutter, tries to decipher her ancestor's cryptic predictions about exactly where the impending Apocalypse will take place.

Atlantis is rising, fish are falling from the sky; everything seems to be going to the Divine Plan.

Everything that is but for the unlikely duo of an angel and a demon who are not all that keen on the prospect of the forthcoming Rapture. Aziraphale (once an angel in the Garden of Eden, but now running an antiquarian bookshop in London), and Crowley (formerly Eden's snake, now driving around London in shades and a vintage Bentley) have been living on Earth for several millennia and have become rather fond of the place. But if they are to stop Armageddon taking place they've got to find and kill the one who will the one bring about the apocalypse: the Antichrist himself.

There's just one small problem: someone seems to have mislaid him...

With a cast led by Peter Serafinowicz and Mark Heap this is the first ever dramatization of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's Good Omens.

Adaptation and sound design by Dirk Maggs.
Produced by Heather Larmour.
