Classic Scottish Albums: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

CLASSIC SCOTTISH ALBUMS: FRANZ FERDINAND - FRANZ FERDINAND (320kbs-m4a/70mb/30mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 21st March 2017

To complement the 6 Music Festival, taking place this year in Glasgow, we repeat highlights of a series in which musician Davie Scott reveals the stories behind classic Scottish albums.

In this episode, first broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland in 2011, Davie discovers the story behind Franz Ferdinand's 2004 self-titled debut. With a certain suaveness, optimism and confidence, the band bagged the Mercury Music Prize, three top-10 singles and 3.6 million album sales worldwide. They made a bigger impact on America than Robbie Williams and Oasis combined, and did it with a lot less bluster. Their influences include Talking Heads, Chic, Pulp and Joy Division, and these combined to reach a far wider audience than your average indie band.

Take Me Out topped several 'Best of 2004' lists, and seemed never to be off the Queen Vic's jukebox in Eastenders. The NME described their music as 'intoxicating', while others compared their worldwide appeal to that of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Duran Duran.

Classic Scottish Albums: The KLF - The White Room

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 17th March 2017

In the run-up to the 6 Music Festival, taking place this year in Glasgow, we repeat highlights of a series in which musician Davie Scott reveals the stories behind classic Scottish albums.

In this episode, first broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland in 2011, Davie unravels one of music's most fascinating tales, The White Room by the KLF.

Bill Drummond - son of a Church of Scotland minister - was almost 40 years old when he decided to create a 'Stadium House' band. He wanted to unite music fans with "gigantic anthems". A former top music exec, he understood pop music hype and hyperbole and used that to his advantage. While some might have judged he and partner Jimmy Cauty as over-the-hill, Bill's marketing know-how pushed The KLF to become the bestselling singles act in the world in 1991. 'Justified and Ancient' (featuring Tammy Wynette) was inescapable. It was No.1 in 18 countries and provided her highest-ever Billboard placing. 'What Time is Love' provided the first taste of The KLF's big commercial sound and was soon answered by the number 1 single '3am Eternal'.

And it wasn't just the fans who loved them. The music press couldn't get enough of their contrary ways, one journalist enthusing that "as providers of perverse, throwaway, three-minute pop-song manna... (they're) punk rock, the Renaissance, Andy Warhol and Jesus Christ all rolled into one."
The gigantic commercial success of the band flew in the face of taste-making rhetoric, and Bill and Jimmy caused further alarm when - at the height of their success - they gave a "violently antagonistic performance" at the 1992 Brit Awards and left the stage to a tannoy announcement stating that "The KLF have now left the music business". Job done!

Archive On 4: Ivor Cutler At 90

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 23rd March 2017

To complement the 6 Music Festival in Glasgow, another chance to hear a programme first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2013 celebrating what would have been Ivor Cutler's 90th birthday. The deceptively quiet wordsmith was born in 1923 near the Rangers ground at Ibrox Park.

"I have a harmonium and it's going to explode in two minutes", were the opening words spoken on the Andy Kershaw Show in 1980 by a gentle voiced Scotsman called Ivor Cutler.

Championed by everyone from the Beatles to Billy Connolly, Ivor Cutler was a poet, humourist and absurdist whose appearances on BBC radio and television span over 5 decades. As well as producing a vast body of records, books and plays, Ivor was a notable eccentric, often seen cycling around London in plus fours, handing out homemade stickers and badges to strangers.

To mark what would have been Ivor's 90th birthday, BBC Radio 4 held a 'party', to celebrate his life and BBC archive in particular. Expect a full house, with performers, fans, collaborators and even his long-term partner, Phyllis King, introducing their favourite poems, songs and memories of Ivor. Weirdness from the archives, pleasure for fans, and a singular introduction to those encountering him for the very first time.

Highlights include Bramwell and King re-enacting a morse code performance of "The Little Black Buzzer".

Presenter: David Bramwell is a writer, musician and, recently, presenter of Sony Award winning "The Haunted Moustache". He is the founder of the "Catalyst Club"; a place for enthusiasts to speak on any subject close to their heart. Ivor Cutler is a subject close to his, having kept correspondence with him in the 1980's.

Producer: Sara Jane Hall.

Parklife: The Blur Story - 1. Episode 1

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 7th March 2017

As the band play major shows in South America and the USA, there's another chance to hear Stuart Maconie chart Blur's success from the early days of Britpop to the release of their seventh album, "Think Tank".

The series looks at where the band came from musically and talks to those responsible for signing, recording and producing them. The band all have their say too!

It traces Blur's success with "Leisure"; through the lacklustre sales performance and record company arguments which afflicted the making of "Modern Life Is Rubbish"; to near bankruptcy and the breakthrough of their third album "Parklife". This sold in excess of 1.2 million copies in the UK alone and launched Blur into the platinum league.

It also covers their rivalry with Oasis and how they changed direction with the "Blur" and "13" albums, before looking at "Think Tank" and how life is different without guitarist Graham Coxon.
