Sound Of Cinema - 462. Alternative Soundtracks

SOUND OF CINEMA - 462. ALTERNATIVE SOUNDTRACKS (320kbs-m4a/134mb/58mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 19th April 2025

Matthew Sweet plays film soundtracks which were replaced before the final cut, such as Alex North's original score for 2001: A Space Odyssey which director Stanley Kubrick didn't use in the final film, preferring to use well-known pieces of classical music such as The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss II instead.

Alfred Hitchcock wasn't afraid to change composers either. Bernard Herrmann, who created the iconic Psycho score, wrote music in his usual style for Hitchcock's Cold War drama Torn Curtain, but the director replaced him with John Addison. The two never worked together again. For his 1972 film, Frenzy, Hitchcock replaced Henry Mancini with Ron Goodwin.

Goodwin also replaced William Walton on Battle of Britain. But, as Matthew explains, Walton may have lost the battle, but he eventually won the war.
