JD Twitch (Optimo) - Phonica Mix Series #55

JD TWITCH (OPTIMO) - PHONICA MIX SERIES #55 (257kbs-m4a/147mb/1hr19mins)

Phonica podcast: 3rd December 2018

The final chapter in Phonica's 2018 Mix Series comes in the form of an intricate and eclectic 75-minute long recording from Optimo's JD Twitch.

For more than three decades, JD Twitch has been at the very forefront of Scotland (and indeed the rest of the world's) clubbing scene. JD Twitch and Optimo‘s other-half, JG Wilkes' legendary event series Optimo (Espacio) used to run at Glasgow's Sub Club every Sunday, from 1997 to 2010 and has gone down in history as one of the cities most iconic residencies of all time.

Over the past fifteen years, Twitch has been releasing music under his various monikers Betty Botox, Mount Florida and Sonic Assasins, to name but three. Alongside his own musical output, Twitch is the main man behind the Optimo Music and Autonomous Africa imprints, which have collectively seen original works and top-class reissues from the likes of Coil, The Golden Filter, Tafi All-Stars, Midland and Auntie Flo in recent years. He also co-manages the Selva Discos label with Brazilian duo Selvagem.

Louie Vega - Phonica Mix Series #44

LOUIE VEGA - PHONICA MIX SERIES #44 (257kbs-m4a/114mb/62mins)

Phonica podcast: 3rd January 2018

One half of Masters At Work and iconic NYC house DJ and producer, Louie Vega, steps up for the 44th edition of the Phonica Mix Series. What better way to start 2018?!

One of house music's most prolific figures, Louie Vega is a man who needs little introduction. Having dedicated the majority of his life to music, Vega has cemented himself as one of the most accomplished DJs and producers within the dance music community over the course of his thirty-something-year career. With a penchant for Latin, Funk, Soul and Freestyle, Vega has crafted his own, unique brand of soulful house under his various aliases and band associations; Nuyorican Soul, Elements Of Life, Hardrive and, of course, the legendary Masters At Work collaborative project with longtime friend Kenny ‘Dope' Gonzalez.

Ahead of Louie's Phonica in-store event on January 3rd, where a very special 5×12" pack featuring all kinds of unreleased gems will be sold exclusively on the night, we caught up with the man himself for an in-depth chat about his formative years as an up and coming DJ in The Bronx, his works with Kenny ‘Dope' Gonzalez and much more

Luke Vibert - Phonica Mix Series #34

LUKE VIBERT - PHONICA MIX SERIES #34 (258kbs-m4a/112mb/60mins)

Phonica podcast: 27th February 2017

British electronic music composer and producer Luke Vibert delivers the latest instalment of the Phonica Mix Series.

Widely known for his diverse output spanning multiple genres simultaneously, the Cornwall-born artist has been steadily releasing music since the mid 90s under different monikers, most notably as Wagon Christ, Kerrier District, Amen Andrews or Plug.

Luke's genre-agnostic body of work has found home in labels such as Mo Wax, Warp, Rephlex, Planet Mu, Lo Recordings, Ninja Tune and more recently also I Love Acid and Hypercolour. His last album, - 'Bizarster', came out on Planet Mu last year under his given name. As some sort of collage, all of his many sounds could be found in there. We can't wait to hear what the international man of mystery has in the pipeline for 2017.

Kutmah - Off The Record Mix Series #53

KUTMAH - OFF THE RECORD MIX SERIES #53 (257kbs-m4a/115mb/62mins)

Phonica podcast: 13th January 2025

The Off The Record mix series kicks off its year with a bonafide legend in the game. Having close ties to artists like Flying Lotus, Ras-G & more Kutmah has blurred the lines between beats, hip-hop, new wave and Lo-fi. Having flipped the script on sampling and making his own sound from a little bit of column A and a little of column B, the DJ (whose mixing skills are nearly unparalleled), has always found himself indistinguishable in terms of genre. This has gathered him a very firm fanbase who never know what to expect from a Kutmah set. That being said we did not know what to expect either, and in this excitement received an hour of pure raw distorted guitars, ambient waves and lo-fi beats.

NUMERO GROUP (MIXED BY ROB SEVIER) - OFF THE RECORD MIX SERIES #58 (257kbs-m4a/111mb/60mins)

Phonica Records podcast: 10th September 2025

For this edition of Off The Record, we're honored to host a mix from Rob Sevier, co-founder of the legendary archival label Numero Group. Known for its meticulous approach to uncovering and reissuing lost gems across soul, funk, punk, ambient, and beyond, Numero has earned its place as a gold standard for crate diggers and curious listeners alike. Sevier, a tireless researcher and selector, brings that same curatorial depth to his exclusive mix—a deep dive into self-released and small-label funk-adjacent singles from Ohio, Texas, Michigan, and Georgia. Alongside the mix, we caught up with him to talk DJing in hidden corners of Japan, the joys of non-allegiance to any one digging method, and what's next for one of the most important archival projects in music.

Andrew Weatherall - Phonica Mix Series #21

ANDREW WEATHERALL - PHONICA MIX SERIES #21 (257kbs-m4a/129mb/70mins)

Phonica Records podcast: 3rd February 2016

February has arrived and we've decided to go with something a little different for episode 21 of the Phonica Mix Series. Andrew Weatherall is a legend of the UK music scene and also one of our regulars here at the shop. We've always considered him to have a finely tuned ear and he loves to dig for music across all genres and styles. We always wanted him to contribute to the series and this month's episode is one of the most original submissions we've had as it doesn't contain a single track of House & Techno which is arguably the main sound our shop has become associated with. There isn't much that hasn't already been said about this legendary producer, DJ and master remixer so we've decided to let the music do the talking here. Down below you'll find an eclectic mix that includes everything from slow-mo Patrick Cowley cuts to afro rhythms from William Onyeabor and mid 80's cold wave from Nagamatzu. Full tracklist down below and since this is Andrew's 'Phonic-a-delic (A Trip Through the Back Wall)' mix, you'll find that all of these records were selected from the back wall of phonica and some are still in stock! Enjoy!
