THE RISE AND FALL OF SEX PISTOLS - 1. NO FUTURE (320kbs-m4a/41mb/17mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 3rd November 2025
"Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" spat a deflated Johnny Rotten before walking off stage in San Francisco. The Sex Pistols were finished. One album, a handful of singles, and a trail of chaos that changed British music.
But where did it all begin? How did a green-haired kid from Finsbury Park, nearly killed by meningitis and raised in poverty, end up fronting the most incendiary band in British history?
In Episode 1 of The Rise and Fall of Sex Pistols, Gina Birch, a founding member of The Raincoats, and Steve Lamacq drag you back to the murky mid-70s and dive into the turbulent origins of punk's most iconic band.
From stolen Bowie gear to backroom pub auditions, this is a story of disillusioned youth, of a fetish shop on the King's Road, of a snarling, short-sighted teenager, and of a chaotic Britain. The perfect breeding ground for a cultural revolution that the Sex Pistols were being primed to lead.
Featuring archive interviews with: John Lydon, Steve Jones, Glen Matlock, Paul Cook, Malcolm McLaren, Vivienne Westwood and Bob Geldof.

THE RISE AND FALL OF SEX PISTOLS - 2. YEAR ZERO (320kbs-m4a/53mb/23mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 3rd November 2025
Britain in the summer of 1976 was hot, angry, on strike and broke; a country on the brink. In the shadows, four raw, unpolished young punks were limbering up on the sidelines, unaware of the impact they would make.
From half-empty art school shows to now-legendary gigs at Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall and London's 100 Club Punk Festival, Episode 2 takes you inside the band's earliest and most shambolic shows.
At the heart of it all: a band more interested in provocation than perfection. As guitarist Steve Jones told the NME during this period: “We're not into music, we're into chaos.”
Fights broke out, glasses were thrown, and punk ripped itself from the underground onto the front pages. The Pistols were forming a following, and they were soundtracking a country crying out for change.
The Sex Pistols were ready to deliver it, whether Britain wanted it or not.
Episode 2 features archive interviews from: Johnny Rotten, Glen Matlock, London club promoter Jack Barrie, Paul Cook, Peter Hook from Joy Division and New Order, Sid Vicious, Siouxsie Sioux, Malcolm McLaren and 100 Club promoter Ron Watts.
Alongside this, there is a new interview from TV Smith from The Adverts.

THE RISE AND FALL OF SEX PISTOLS - 3. THE FILTH AND THE FURY (320kbs-m4a/44mb/19mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 3rd November 2025
In just three months, the Sex Pistols went from unknowns to the most feared band in Britain. After headlining the infamous 100 Club Punk Festival, they landed a major-label deal with EMI and released their debut single, Anarchy in the UK.
Radio wouldn't touch it, and record shops banned it. No matter, as within weeks the Pistols were on everyone's lips... for an entirely different reason.
Episode 3 of The Rise and Fall of Sex Pistols focuses on one of the most notorious moments in British television history. A half-cut band. A smirking presenter. A live broadcast that shattered the illusion of polite British youth.
Within 24 hours, the headlines screamed "The Filth and the Fury!" and the nation erupted. Gigs were cancelled. Politicians raged. Record label shareholders revolted. EMI, who had only just signed the band, were already trying to distance themselves.
This was the moment Britain met punk at teatime... and it never recovered.

THE RISE AND FALL OF SEX PISTOLS - 4. CANCELLED (320kbs-m4a/51mb/22mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 3rd November 2025
In the aftermath of the Bill Grundy interview, the Sex Pistols became Britain's most notorious band, not for their music, but for the chaos that followed. To some, they were a threat to society itself, and instead of ignoring them, middle England lost its collective mind.
Episode 4 of the Rise and Fall of Sex Pistols plunges into the wreckage of that moment: a UK tour collapsing date by date, sackings from two major labels in just six months, and how manager Malcolm McLaren spun outrage into art.
From smashed toilets to moral panic, from Caerphilly to Buckingham Palace, this is the story of how doing nothing made the Pistols more famous than ever.
Episode 4 features archive interviews from: Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Malcolm McLaren and Sid Vicious alongside a brand-new interview with punk author and historian Chris Sullivan.

THE RISE AND FALL OF SEX PISTOLS - 5. ANARCHY ON THE THAMES (320kbs-m4a/43mb/18mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 3rd November 2025
1977, and as Britain prepared to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee, the Sex Pistols were plotting something else entirely. Fresh from being dropped by two major labels, they signed with Virgin Records and unleashed God Save the Queen... a blistering punk anthem that tore into the monarchy and shattered British tradition.
It was banned by the BBC, blacklisted from shops, and allegedly kept from reaching Number 1. And then, on Jubilee Day, the Pistols took to the Thames in a now-legendary riverboat stunt that ended with police raids and arrests.
Episode 5 is the story of how the Pistols hijacked Britain's biggest party, declared war on the establishment, and created the most controversial single in UK history.
Featuring archive interviews from: Richard Branson, Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Malcolm McLaren and Sid Vicious alongside new interviews with the legendary Sex Pistols official photographer Dennis Morris and groundbreaking bass player Jah Wobble.

THE RISE AND FALL OF SEX PISTOLS - 6. THE ALBUM, THE OUTRAGE AND THE COURT CASE (320kbs-m4a/48mb/20mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 3rd November 2025
After the chaos of their Jubilee riverboat stunt and the media storm around God Save the Queen, the Pistols were marked men. Attacked in the streets, vilified in the press, and hated by half the country, Britain's most notorious band were now public enemy number one.
But manager Malcolm McLaren had no intention of retreating. Amid rising paranoia, infighting, and Sid Vicious's self-destruction, the Pistols did what no one expected: they released one of the most incendiary debut albums of all time - Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols.
It wasn't just the music that caused outrage. One word on its cover dragged the band into a landmark obscenity trial that would test the limits of free
Episode 6 of The Rise and Fall of Sex Pistols is the story of the album that changed British music forever, and how the Sex Pistols took on the law, the tabloids, and the establishment… and won.
Featuring archive interviews from: Richard Branson, Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Malcolm McLaren and Sid Vicious alongside a new interview with the legendary photographer Dennis Morris and a cameo appearance from BBC 1 continuity announcer Duncan Newmarch.

THE RISE AND FALL OF SEX PISTOLS - 7. NO FUN. IMPLOSION IN THE USA (320kbs-m4a/46mb/20mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 3rd November 2025
By the end of 1977, the Sex Pistols sat at the top of the UK charts... while simultaneously hitting rock bottom. Sid Vicious was imploding, his partner Nancy Spungen was fuelling the chaos and Johnny Rotten was growing disillusioned with Malcolm McLaren's toxic games.
Still, the band pushed ahead with a final run of gigs, including an unexpectedly wholesome Christmas Day show for children of striking firefighters. No one knew it then, but it would be their final UK performance for two decades.
Then came their first American tour. The Pistols were dropped into the heart of the conservative South. Sid carved into his own chest on stage and Rotten was nearly broken by paranoia. The tour descended into violence, vomit, and blood.
And to the end, in San Francisco, with the band on its knees, Johnny Rotten stared down the crowd and asked: "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" With a literal mic drop, he walked off stage, signalling the end of the Sex Pistols.
Featuring archive interviews from: Nancy Spungen, Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Malcolm McLaren, Sid Vicious, Sex Pistols' roadie Stephen 'Roadent' Conolly.

THE RISE AND FALL OF SEX PISTOLS - 8. MY WAY (320kbs-m4a/48mb/21mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 3rd November 2025
In the wake of their final show, the Sex Pistols split, torn apart by addiction, betrayal, and manipulation. John Lydon returned to London, disgusted. Steve Jones and Paul Cook escaped to Rio to record with fugitive Ronnie Biggs. And Sid Vicious, already spiraling, began his final descent in New York.
This is the tragic coda to punk's most dangerous band. From the Chelsea Hotel to Rikers Island, from a heroin-induced coma to an infamous murder charge.
The Rise and Fall of Sex Pistols ends here, in blood and handcuffs, and headlines. In this final episode, Gina Birch and Steve Lamacq reflect on the cultural earthquake the Pistols triggered, the lives they changed, and the price they paid.
Featuring archive interviews from: Nancy Spungen, Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Malcolm McLaren and Sid Vicious alongside a new interview with Jah Wobble, childhood friend of Vicious and Lydon.

DISMALAND: BANKSY'S DYSTOPIAN THEME PARK (320kbs-m4a/23mb/10mins)
BBC World Service broadcast: 9th December 2025
In 2015, Banksy turned a derelict swimming pool in Weston-super-Mare, England, into a dystopian theme park which drew huge crowds and Hollywood stars.
Working under cover of darkness, the street artist created Dismaland - a 'bemusement park' offering a satirical twist on mainstream resorts.
The temporary exhibition featured a fire-ravaged castle, a riot police van sinking into a lake, and Cinderella’s upturned pumpkin carriage.
Open for just five weeks, Dismaland sold thousands of tickets daily and injected an estimated £20 million into the local economy.
Kurtis Young speaks to Reena Stanton-Sharma about his summer job as a steward at Dismaland.

SOUL MUSIC: SERIES 32 - 4. MAY YOU NEVER (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 19th April 2025
"May you never lay your head down without a hand to hold / May you never make your bed out in the cold."
A perfect folk song of brotherly affection, with simply voice and guitar, John Martyn's May You Never has captured listeners' hearts since 1971.
John Martyn was born in Surrey in 1948 and grew up in Glasgow. Part of the potent London folk scene in the late 60s early 70s, John's style evolved from these folk roots. Written in his early 20s, the enduring version of May You Never was recorded in one take in the early hours of recording his beloved 1973 album, Solid Air. The lyrics encapsulate something of the essence of John Martyn: sweet, joyful and affectionate, yet with a hint of danger ("And may you never lose your temper / If you get in a bar room fight"). John's life was beset by substance abuse and addiction and he died in 2009, age 60.
May You Never, perhaps his most famous song, is remembered by those whose lives became entwined with the song, and by others who knew John or have covered it.
Featuring:
Michael Volpe, Executive Director of If Opera;
Lauren Bensted, a writer based in London;
Graeme Thomson, author of Small Hours: The Long Night of John Martyn;
Spencer Cozens, keyboard player and Musical Director in John Martyn's band from 1990-2009;
Blythe Pepino, Kit Hawes, Pete Josef and Sam Brookes from The John Martyn Project.
With thanks to Kit Hawes and Spencer Cozens for the instrumental recordings.

Here she selects the music which accompanied those formative experiences, the inspirations for some of her own musical process and how she's learned to take care of herself through it all. With tracks from John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Pentangle, Pattie Smith and Razzy Bailey.

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 8th October 2025
In this very special show, Stephen King, one of the world's biggest selling authors, chooses his favourite songs and talks about what they mean to him; from his love of AC/DC to appearing on stage with John Cougar Mellencamp, his running buddy.

SPINAL TAP II ON RADIO 2 (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 7th September 2025
This Is Spinal Tap is regularly voted as one of the greatest comedy films of all time in critic and audience polls, and in Spinal Tap II – The End Continues, the ageing rock gods are required to return to the stage one more time because of an old contractual obligation.
Presented by Shaun Keaveny, in-character, the main cast of Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean and Rob Reiner take us though the perils of growing old in a modern music business and reveal some of their hair-brained schemes to find contentment away from the band.
We have a romp through famous scenes from the original movie and from the sequel as Nigel Tufnel, David St Hubbins, and Derek Smalls frankly express their opinions of guest musicians Sir Elton John and Sir Paul McCartney featured in the new film. Jarvis Cocker, Sting, Johnny Marr and others express their admiration for the band and their influence.
British cast members Chris Addison, Nina Conti and Kerry Godliman give voice to their Tap experience making the sequel.
Exclusively for Radio 2, each Spinal Tap member reveals the music from across three centuries that has inspired or comforted them, both as children and in the topsy turvy world of Rock 'n' Roll.

ANDREW WEATHERALL - PHONICA MIX SERIES #21 (257kbs-m4a/129mb/70mins)
Phonica Records podcast: 3rd February 2016
February has arrived and we've decided to go with something a little different for episode 21 of the Phonica Mix Series. Andrew Weatherall is a legend of the UK music scene and also one of our regulars here at the shop. We've always considered him to have a finely tuned ear and he loves to dig for music across all genres and styles. We always wanted him to contribute to the series and this month's episode is one of the most original submissions we've had as it doesn't contain a single track of House & Techno which is arguably the main sound our shop has become associated with. There isn't much that hasn't already been said about this legendary producer, DJ and master remixer so we've decided to let the music do the talking here. Down below you'll find an eclectic mix that includes everything from slow-mo Patrick Cowley cuts to afro rhythms from William Onyeabor and mid 80's cold wave from Nagamatzu. Full tracklist down below and since this is Andrew's 'Phonic-a-delic (A Trip Through the Back Wall)' mix, you'll find that all of these records were selected from the back wall of phonica and some are still in stock! Enjoy!

HELENA HAUFF - RESIDENT ADVISOR RA.1000 MIX (320kbs/242mb/1hr46mins)
Resident Advisor podcast: 13th August 2025
When Helena Hauff made her first RA Podcast appearance back in 2013, she was on the eve of releasing her debut production, Actio Reactio, on Actress' Werkdiscs imprint. In the 12 years that have elapsed since, she's become not just a household name within electronic music, but the kind of rare talent that lives in impenetrable seclusion from industry tumult.
(Hauff, enviously, has never even owned a smartphone.)
Her calling card was and continues to be her penchant for rough and ready EBM, electro and new wave, recorded straight to tape. And while her selections are seemingly untethered to the trend cycles that dominate popular dance music culture, they have staying power. Her unique ability is creating a singular listening experience from otherwise disparate or out-of-favour tracks, with a raw immediacy that functions as a redress to overly-choreographed modern DJing.
The Hamburg icon showcases her outsider approach to selection once again in her mix for RA.1000. Threaded together by strobe-lit DIY electronica, old-school acid house and corrosive machine funk that chews up the ear, the nearly two-hour set pulls music from modern producers while explicitly nodding to electronic music's history.
In the sci-fi themed first half, Hauff drops not one but two Cybotron tracks, nodding to Juan Atkins' blueprint for the world of electro. You'll also hear "Riot" from Underground Resistance, the definitive mission statement for the Motor City techno collective for a world ablaze. Here, Hauff raises the bar once again, demonstrating how these songs and their sentiments continue to resonate through the ages. This is musical anarchism executed to the highest degree. - Chloe Lula

DJ HARVEY & ANDREW WEATHERALL - RESIDENT ADVISOR RA.1000 MIX (320kbs/882mb/6hrs25mins)
Resident Advisor podcast: 14th August 2025
Find out more about RA.1000 with DJ Harvey & Andrew Weatherall and listen to all RA mixes from RA.001 to RA.1000 in our archives: 1000.ra.co
When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon? All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.
The fourth-longest mix in the RA Podcast's history is an unrepeatable marathon set recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. (2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000; if we have to clock it, so do you.)
It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.
The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club whose immaculate decor and imposing atmosphere was already considered legendary long before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015. As part of a series anchored around start-to-close combinations, RA finally put these two peers together in the booth. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut.
Although a serial collaborator in the studio, he didn't actually play too many b2b sets either, preferring to sail the open seas by his own navigation. What follows is 385 minutes of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes, chronicling a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than potentially any comparable point in the 21st century. It's a curiously under-acknowledged wrinkle in the timeline that makes some of the more headstrong RA.1000s (Sama', Theo Parrish, Jyoty) seem as if they've been beamed in from another artistic medium entirely.
If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who's playing what. Take the goosebumps-inducing slide into a disco-dub cover of Echo & the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon"? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of the comically overripe bass on The Isley Brothers' "Live It Up, Pts. 1 & 2"? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. The pair putter around the 100 BPM range for so long that nudging up to 127 by the double encore feels practically like flooring it down the highway.
When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few goals: tick off a handful of long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else. We sought to render an accurate picture of DJ culture in 2025 for posterity, and get arms around some of the key storylines in the decade since we went 5 for RA.500. Who broke big? What could you pull off at peak time today than you'd struggle to make land then? And what memories do we hold more fondly as time has gone on?
DJing and the spectacle around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. It's a scarcely-recognisable scene. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon.
Yet a sense of accomplishment is bundled within that melancholy. Appreciation, too. 1000 episodes is great innings, and we're thankful for every contributor and facilitator who built this series, week by week, mix by mix. Where will DJ sets—or any of this—be in 2044? Hard to say; best not to overthink that one. Instead, enjoy luxuriating in the company of two of the greatest to ever do it, together, for the first and last time. - Gabriel Szatan
