Matt Everitt picks up where he left off in 2010 as David Byrne becomes the only artist to return for The Second Time. We talk collaborations, $80 million offers, and American Utopia.

The first First Time season started in July 2010, and since then we've had 224 guests. And we've never had the same guest on twice. Until now.

Since we last spoke in September 2010 David Byrne has been very busy. He made Here Lies Love, a concept album and stage disco musical about Imelda Marcos with Fatboy Slim. He collaborated with Arcade Fire, Son Lux and Mitski and on a whole album - Love This Giant with St Vincent. And in 2023 he took part in the reissue of Talking Heads' famous and brilliant concert film Stop Making Sense, to the absolute joy of old and new fans of the band. Plus, and this brings us up to date, he recorded his 2018 album American Utopia which became an epic, and groundbreaking, 160 date tour and a Broadway show and now a concert film directed by Spike Lee – which you can see in cinemas on 5 August.

In May 1982, a young guitarist with ambitions to form his very own Mancunian Rolling Stones found himself on a bus to Stretford, cassette in hand, and a hunch about the right frontman.

Johnny Marr and Morrissey seemed like opposites. But they had Irish roots, Manchester streets, a love of 60s pop, and an unstoppable sense of purpose in common. From that first afternoon bonding over records, the chemistry was instant.

Then came a drummer on mushrooms, a bass player dragged in from a lumber yard, and the band's first unforgettable gig, with a go-go dancer thrown in for good measure.

New Year's Eve 1983: The Smiths take the stage in New York for their American debut. The band are barely in their twenties. Their manager is nowhere to be found. Someone falls off the stage. Welcome to America.

As the touring schedule grew ever more relentless, so did the excess. And as the rest of the band embraced the rock and roll lifestyle on the road, the distance between them and Morrissey quietly grew.

Meanwhile, bassist Andy Rourke was battling a personal crisis that had followed him since his teens - one that would eventually cost him his place in the band.

Actor Ray Winstone talks to John Wilson about his formative cultural influences and inspirations. A schoolboy boxing champion, he built a reputation playing tough, working class characters after being cast in the borstal drama Scum at the age of 17. Winstone won huge acclaim for his performance as an alcoholic abusive husband in the film Nil By Mouth, directed by Gary Oldman, and Jonathan Glazer's Sexy Beast in which he played a bank robber forced out of retirement. Other big screen roles include the Martin Scorsese gangland drama The Departed, and Anthony Mingehella's American civil war film Cold Mountain. On television, he's played Henry the Eighth, Magwitch in Great Expectations and most recently, an imprisoned crime boss in the Netflix series The Gentlemen.

The Spanish National Orchestra makes its Proms debut under Chief Conductor David Afkham, bringing with it a set of heat-soaked musical postcards. Spanish guitar phenomenon Rafael Aguirre joins the ensemble for Rodrigo's much-loved Concierto de Aranjuez – an elegant, idealised vision of Spain's past. The orchestra transforms itself into a giant guitar in two Ravel classics: the pulsing seguidilla serenade Alborada del gracioso and the hypnotic thrum of Boléro. The adventures of a miller, his beautiful young wife and an amorous magistrate become a vivid series of dances in music from Manuel de Falla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat.

A leading figure in the UK's jungle revival, Tim Reaper has built a reputation for his razor-sharp breakbeats and heavyweight basslines. The London-based producer and DJ has collaborated with artists including Special Request and Dwarde, and in 2020 launched his Future Retro label and club night. For this 6 Mix, he explores the past, present and future of jungle through a high-energy selection from one of the scene's most vital voices.
