He’s a legend who’s recognised the world over and across the generations as the pioneer of electronic dance music. And here singer, songwriter and producer Giorgio Moroder invites us into his home in the Italian Alps to talk to us about his amazing career, demonstrate his art on his home studio keyboard and remember decades at the top of groundbreaking music production.
Giorgio, who some people dub ‘the father of disco’ grew up in Italy in the 1950s. This year he turns 79 and is embarking on a world tour. His impact on popular music is huge and this programme attempts to work out what’s so special about his creations.
We hear about his musical roots and experimentation before examining what the Giorgio ‘magic’ brought to Donna Summer hits like Love to Love You Baby and I Feel Love. Her widower Bruce Sudano, who also worked with Georgio speaks about their relationship and the music.
Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Britney Spiers, Cher, Janet Jackson, Bonnie Tyler and Kylie Minogue are among the artistes who have worked with Giorgio. He’s produced many famous hits we all know - Together in Electric Dreams with Phil Oakley, Take My Breath Away with Berlin, Call Me by Debbie Harry - and for Flashdance - What a Feeling. And his talents are all over other film music too – most notably Midnight Express and Scarface.
Meanwhile a musical about the life of Donna Summer recently played Broadway. Kaleigh Cronin who took the role of Giorgio tells us what she drew from the music master’s personality in her bid to do him justice on stage.

Giorgio Moroder shares his musical milestones with Matt Everitt in an programme first broadcast in 2014.
Pioneer of electronic music and regarded by many as the Godfather of Disco, Giorgio Moroder is a charming and effortlessly cool producer and songwriter. He talks us through his career, from his earliest bubblegum electropop recordings in the late 60s to the creation of his own studio, Musicland, where he created a remarkable run of records through the 1970s.
Giorgio talks about partnership Donna Summer - an artistic relationship which resulted in Love to Love You Baby and, probably the greatest dance record of all time, I Feel Love. He also guides us through the recording of his iconic film scores such as Midnight Express and Cat People. He worked with David Bowie on the latter.
With typical humour, Giorgio also explains how his career wavered on the 90s (as he busied himself designing sports cars and creating whiskeys) and explains how he came to work with Daft Punk on their world conquering album Random Access Memories, what it was like starting DJing again at 74 and his plans for the future.

Exactly 40 years ago, the combination of Donna Summer's beguiling voice and the studio wizardry of writer-producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte created a record that changed the course of dance music. 'I Feel Love,' released on July 2, 1977, was the template for the electronic revolution that followed, inspiring generations of artists with a daringly futuristic sound that reverberates to this day.
To mark this momentous anniversary, Paul Sexton introduces a celebration of a truly groundbreaking record. 'The Summer Of I Feel Love' features memories of its creation from Moroder and Bellotte, while superstar DJs Arthur Baker and John Morales talk about its impact on both the dancefloor and on their lives. Martyn Ware, meanwhile, describes the influence that 'I Feel Love' had on his work with the Human League and Heaven 17. Also featured are techno pioneer Derrick May, author Tim Lawrence and Sister Bliss of Faithless, who reveal what it was like to remix the track that became the very pulse of disco.
