It's been a dramatic 12 months for Sean Dyche since he took the Everton job. He saved the club from relegation on the final day of the 22/23 season, saw the Board leave, the death of Everton's longest serving Chairman in more than a century, two PSR breaches and a 10 point deduction. As he marks one year as "the Gaffer", Giulia Bould went to Finch Farm to catch up with Sean Dyche...

Annie will play her favourite songs, and take us on a wonderful musical journey from the Beatles to Ibiza, the Who to London Grammar. This will be Compulsory Listening for anyone who loves music.
In this episode Annie looks back at making the move from print to broadcasting, and how she overcame a sexist BBC to become the first female DJ.
It's 1965 and music journo Annie gets her own national TV show That's For Me. She champions The Who, The Yardbirds and Georgie Fame and the show is her intro to The Ad Lib club and Swinging London. 1965 was the kick off point, and then followed three zenith years of Super Sixties Britain – 1965-67. For Annie Nightingale, from being a local reporter in Brighton, writing about music and being a fan, 1965 was the year she felt she had something to contribute. ITV's That's For Me, sister show to Ready Steady Go! allowed Annie to choose the artists, some of whom were making their very first tv appearance: The Who, with the first ever pop video for I Can't Explain; and The Yardbirds, which launched the careers of Britain's most famous rock guitarists Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. Other bands on the series included The Moody Blues, with Go Now, and Georgie Fame with Yeh Yeh.

Andrew Scott won a BAFTA as the evil Moriarty in Sherlock, but is equally loved for a divine television role as the hot priest in Fleabag. A prolific and versatile stage actor, he has starred in many plays by contemporary dramatists, including Port and Birdland by Simon Stevens. He played Hamlet to great critical acclaim and won an Olivier award for his starring role in Noel Coward's Present Laughter. His latest film role is All Of Us Strangers, in which he plays a single gay man haunted by the death of his parents.
Andrew Scott talks to John Wilson about his suburban Dublin childhood and the early creative influence of his mother, an art teacher. After landing a debut role in an independent Irish film called Korea, Andrew gave up a university place studying drama to pursue an acting career. He remembers small parts playing American soldiers in Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan and the television series Band Of Brothers. He discusses his love of Shakespeare and his approach to playing the role of Hamlet at the Almeida Theatre in London in 2017, and reveals how the music of Pet Shop Boys, and in particular their 1987 album Actually, are a reminder of a formative time of his life.
John Wilson's guest is the violinist Nigel Kennedy. A prodigy whose childhood talents were nurtured by Yehudi Menuhin, one of the greatest violinist of the 20th century, Kennedy himself became an international star in 1989 with his recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. It sold over three million copies, topping the UK classical charts for a year and went on to be listed as the biggest selling classical album of all time in the Guinness Book Of Records. An unconventional classical musician from the outset, it wasn't just his wardrobe, accent and attitude that set him apart. As well as recording all the major violin concertos, his repertoire includes jazz standards, folk tunes and Jimi Hendrix. He remains one of the world's greatest virtuosos.
For This Cultural Life, Nigel chooses his two violinist mentors; Yehudi Menuhin and the French musician Stéphane Grappelli with whom he shared a love of jazz and improvisation. Going to New York to study at the prestigious Juilliard School also proved a turning point for Kennedy, not so much for the teaching he received there, but for the legendary jazz musicians like Jimmy Rowles and Ellis Larkins that he sought out in clubs downtown and in Harlem. Nigel also discusses how being a fan of Aston Villa football club has made him think about crowd dynamics in his concerts and reveals the influence of his dog Huxley on his approach to his career.
At the Repair Shop, the team resurrect a piece of kit from the 1970s owned by a pioneering music producer.
First through the barn doors is music producer Neal Fraser, aka The Mad Professor. Neal is credited for his pioneering work establishing a music genre in the 70s and 80s known as dub, and he's brought the very machine he created that distinctive sound with. The electronic sound effect machine was last working back in 1984, and Neal would love to make music with it again.

Jim Kerr, lead singer of the Scottish band Simple Minds, on the importance and influence of The Doors' Jim Morrison - marking what would have been the iconic rock stars 80th birthday.
Making a pilgrimage to Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris where Morrison was buried shortly after his untimely death in July 1971, Jim describes the enormous impact Morrison has had on his life, from the very first time he heard The Doors' Riders on the Storm on his father's car radio as an 11-year-old, and the immediate fascination with all aspects of Morrison's poetry and The Doors' music that continues undimmed more than 50 years later.
Deeply affected by the intoxicating and menacing atmosphere of The Doors' music, the teenage Jim Kerr set out on a mission to find out as much as he could about the enigmatic Californian counter-cultural icons and soon discovered a small group of like minded Glaswegians, including his school friend Charlie Burchill, all of whom were fascinated by the dark drama of Morrison and his band.
The more they leaned about The Doors and their influences, the more Jim and Charlie were determined to follow The Doors' blueprint and form their own band to see how far their artistic visions could take them.
When Jim first visited Morrison's grave in 1979, he viewed the rock legend as a young man, who had lived a dynamic, exotic life. Now, returning as a 65-year-old, Jim has a different perspective on what he views as a young man's legacy, which he examines through the prism of his own poetry and music, featuring previously unheard Morrison poetry, studio out takes and archive interviews with the self-proclaimed Lizard King.

The Wombles live under Wimbledon Common, and it is their special responsibility to 'tidy up' everything that untidy human beings leave behind.
In this third audiobook in the series, the Wombles are back at their old burrow underneath Wimbledon Common. It's lovely to be back home under Wimbledon Common but a surprise visitor ruffles some feathers (or fur) and Great Uncle Bulgaria receives a very important letter.
All the young Wombles are far too excited about being back in their old home burrow to notice that Great Uncle Bulgaria, Tobermory and Madame Cholet are rather quiet and thoughtful. Exactly who will accompany Great Uncle Bulgaria on his overseas trip? And who's going to run the burrow while he's away?
'Zero Hour' has arrived as the rain arrives and starts to fill the tanks of the new underwater plant farm. Madame Cholet rustles up a delicious new recipe and the rest of the burrow is humming with excitement at the return of Great Uncle Bulgaria and Bungo.
THE WANDERING WOMBLES (320kbs-m4a/439mb/3hrs10mins) BBC Radio 4 podcast: 11th December 2023
The Wombles live under Wimbledon Common, and it is their special responsibility to 'tidy up' everything that untidy human beings leave behind.
In this second audiobook in the series, The Wombles are in search of pastures new as the lorries on Tibbet's Corner are causing some of the burrow's underground passages to crumble and cave in.

There's a loud rumbling in the burrow and cracks are starting to appear in the walls and ceilings. Great Uncle Bulgaria decides it's time to take action.
Plans are being hatched in the burrow library and Wellington is trusted with a great secret. Bungo's curiosity is soon to be satisfied by a summons to the Operations Room.
The adventure continues as Bungo and Orinoco manage to escape captivity. Having climbed out of the cell, landing in the waters of Loch Ness, what is this strange, lumpy Thing now moving towards them?
Wellington and Tomsk form a second scouting party. Will they find a plot for a new burrow and can they go undetected by Humans until Tobermory comes back to get them?
There's an old Womble saying that trouble comes in threes. The lorries are still thundering towards Tibbet's Corner, Orinoco and Bungo are still missing and there's been further downwards movement in the burrow. Great Uncle Bulgaria and Tobermory consider their options.
A journey across London to the new burrow feels incomplete without Tobermory, Miss Adelaide, Bungo and Orinoco, but there are some interesting distractions to be going on with, not least the discovery of ancient Womble cave paintings and a wealth of Womble antiques.

We are introduced to the Wombles' burrow underneath Wimbledon Common. Young Bungo has just chosen his name from Great Uncle Bulgaria's atlas and is ready to become a Womble of the World as he embarks on his first day of work, tidying the Common.
The Wombles are feeling very festive, and in true Christmas spirit, Great Uncle Bulgaria invites an elderly gentleman to join in with celebrations in the burrow.
A really long hard winter makes life a difficult business for all wild creatures, and the Wombles are no exception. Orinoco's been finding things particularly tough and an impulsive incident leads to a rescue mission for his best friend Bungo.
A helpful stranger turns out to be quite the welcome visitor. Great Uncle Bulgaria is delighted to see his long lost Cousin Yellowstone from America but Tobermory's not so sure.
Bill Nighy presents the definitive story of what really went down on tape, and in the studio, during the recording of Bob Dylan's classic album Blonde On Blonde.
In February 1966, Bob rolled in to Nashville to work on his seventh studio album. Following only partially successful sessions in New York, the decision had been taken to relocate to the Colombia label's Music Row studios. Nashville Cats looks at the music that resulted from the unlikely alliance between seasoned country music veterans, accustomed to fixed time studio sessions, and the more erratic modus operandi favoured by the wiry hipster poet.
Generally regarded as the high watermark of Dylan's most creatively intense period, Blonde On Blonde was recalled by the songwriter himself as being "the closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind...it's that thin wild mercury sound". Bill Nighy narrates a tale of in-studio composition, musicians by turns bemused, exasperated and inspired, and an artist operating at the very zenith of his talent.
Nashville Cats features newly sourced interviews with the key participants on these historic studio recording dates including musicians Al Kooper, Charlie McCoy, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, Wayne Moss, Henry Strzelecki and Joe South. The documentary also features the perspective of Producer Bob Johnston, the man responsible for convincing Dylan to record in Nashville, and reveals the real story behind the supposed symbolism of its famous cover shot care of Jerry Schatzberg, the man behind the lens.

"I've always been a creature of change" - Joni Mitchell
Through archive, fresh interviews, narration, immersive sound design and an original score, we trace the story of an extraordinary life and explore what makes Joni Mitchell a singular artist: the genius of her lyrics; her incredible talent as guitarist, painter and producer; and her restless drive for innovation.
We follow Joni from her 'flatlander' childhood on the Canadian prairies, through the folk clubs of Toronto and Detroit, to a redwood cottage in L.A.'s Laurel Canyon, to a cave in Crete, to a deserted desert highway, to recording studios and stages around the world. From her earliest home recordings to masterpieces like Blue, Court and Spark, and Hejira, we explore some of the stories behind her best-loved songs and celebrate her remarkable return to live performance in the past year: "like seeing, in the wild, a rare bird long feared extinct".
Our guide through the series is the California-born, Manchester-based musician, Jesca Hoop. We hear tributes from musicians who have played alongside Joni and from those who have been inspired and influenced by her music. We hear from friends, including Larry Klein and Graham Nash; and from music critics and biographers, including Ann Powers, David Yaffe, Lindsay Zoladz, Kate Mossman, Barney Hoskyns, Miles Grier and Jenn Pelly.

How did the greats become the greats? And what did it cost them to get there? Legend is a musician biography series from BBC Radio 4 exploring the life and music of the pioneering artists who shaped modern music.
Series one tells the story of Joni Mitchell and explores her incomparable body of work - from her earliest home recordings to masterpieces like Blue, Court and Spark, and Hejira.
It's a story that takes us from the remote prairie towns of Saskatchewan to the bohemian idyll of Laurel Canyon; through the hippie dreams of the Woodstock generation and into the dog-eat-dog world of 1980s LA.
Her path has not been straightforward. There have been lonely roads and wrong turns. Road rage, and car crashes - symbolic and real. Joni walked away from fame many times. She gave up a daughter and found her again. She came close to death more than once. And now, she's back on stages again at the age of 80.
In the first episode, we hear how young Joni loves to watch the trains go by from the window of her house in a Saskatchewan prairie town. Even as a child, there is a desire to see what's around the next bend. She's a tomboy and an athlete, until polio forces her into a period of convalescence; she's no longer picked first for sports teams but when she gets the use of her legs back she rock 'n' roll dances her way through her teens. Her childhood ambition is to be a painter, but when she finally makes it to art school everything changes....
In episode two we follow Joni from 1964 through to late 1969. Joni makes a 'bad marriage', signs adoption papers, leaves a bad marriage, makes it to Greenwich Village and then to LA's Laurel Canyon. We find out about the inspiration for some of her best known songs, including Little Green and Both Sides Now. In 1968, her recording career begins with her debut album 'Song to a Seagull'; with two more records following in quick succession - Clouds, and Ladies of the Canyon. In 1969, she is heartbroken to miss out on one of the biggest events of her generation - Woodstock. But - despite not getting to go - she writes a song that will help to define the event, and the era, in the popular imagination.
In episode three we follow Joni from 1970 through to 1974 - an incredibly fertile period during which she creates her albums Blue, For the Roses and Court and Spark. A period of romantic highs and lows, heady successes and hermit-like retreats, of psychoanalysis and vulnerability, and of new creative directions.
In episode four we follow Joni from 1974 through to 1978. In 1974 Court and Spark is released to huge acclaim but already Joni is heading in new directions musically. This is the era of The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. Through '74 and '75 she tours extensively and joins Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue. Her creative restlessness and refusal to be put in a box take her in new directions, but also into controversial territory.
In episode five, we hear how meeting a towering figure of jazz leads to a new collaboration, but Joni's hopes for a hit are unfulfilled. As the 1980s arrive, Joni continues to experiment with new sounds, but discovers the cost of being a middle-aged woman in pop. This is the decade of new politics and new love, hard knocks and bad omens. Joni experiences a series of misfortunes, and the pain of giving up her daughter resurfaces once more, in a song.
In the final episode, we hear how Joni comes full circle. She reunites with the daughter she gave up for adoption, retires then returns to music, suffers from and then recovers from a near-fatal brain aneurysm, all those years after contracting and surviving polio. With the love and support of a community of musicians, Joni once again returns to the stage, celebrating all that she's created over 80 years.
