Not Fade Away

How do you end a piece of music? For 500 years pieces always had a clear ending. But in the 20th Century music often ended with a fade out instead. Stuart Maconie looks at how and why this change came about.
Pop songs often fade but classical music nearly always has a very clear ending, often a climax with all the performers playing a rousing cadence which almost guaranteed applause.
An early exception is Haydn's Farewell Symphony of 1772 which ends with the players leaving the stage one by one, until there are only two players left. Haydn wrote it as a hint that the players needed a break.
Holst's Planets Suite (written 1914 -16) ends with a chorus of women's voices sound fading into nothing - perhaps the first true example of a fade in music.
At the same time, recording technology was developing and fades could be created by moving away from the recording horn. And record companies began imposing endings for commercial reasons or to fit it onto a side of a 78 record, sometimes with quite brutal results.
With the advent of modern recording techniques it became easy to create a fade electrically and from the 1950s onwards this became commonplace.
But it was in the 1960s when the fade came into its own, particularly with the iconic 2 minute fade of Hey Jude.
So has the fade out simply become a lazy way to end a song? And what happens when that song is played live and a fade isn't possible?
Stuart Maconie draws from his own experience as a dj and we also hear from Stephen Johnson presenter of BBC Radio 3's Discovering Music, Jacob Smith Lecturer in Film and Television Studies and remastering engineer Roger Beardsley. And Martyn Ware of Heaven 17 talks about ending songs live that faded out in the studio versions.

Deep in the summer of 2001, a new programme tiptoed out onto Radio 4. The concept was simple – book someone famous to talk about someone dead. Except there was a problem; famous people don’t talk much about someone else. In a world of the celebrity plug, getting voices to commit to a radio programme where they couldn’t talk about themselves was proving tough. Twelve slots to fill, and nobody signed up.
400 episodes later ... Barbara Castle, Beryl Bainbridge, Bernard Manning, eventually everyone says yes. David Attenborough chose a man who first drew a flea, George Osborne the king who taxed the non-doms. Then there was Christopher Hitchens, so incensed by the presenter that he walked out. "You're a bleeding Tory," he said, "and always have been. Have you done? I have to be somewhere at one."
Matthew Parris and original series producer Miles Warde go behind the scenes to find out how Great Lives was born. In a completely different broadcast from London's Radio Theatre John McCarthy meets with Michael Palin to celebrate the actor-adventurer's remarkable life and career as heard on BBC radio.
Michael Palin has been a Python, a world traveller, author, actor and screenwriter, and often described as "Britain's Nicest Man". However one area which is often overlooked from his long and impressive career are his fascinating radio contributions.
In this programme we hear extracts from his mighty canon of work including his famous diaries, interviews about his comedy and travel work, documentaries about mental illness and dramas. We also hear rare footage of the time he tried his hand as a BBC disc jockey, his charity work and a hilarious pythonesque local radio broadcast from a taxi rank.
Recorded in front an enthusiastic audience the celebration features contributions from comedians Barry Cryer and John Finnermore, broadcasters Paul Gambaccini and John Waite and throughout we discover Palin's love for radio as we hear a treasure trove of archives on an eclectic mix of subjects and plenty memories of Monty Python.

Archive On 4: The Empire Strikes Back

40 years ago George Lucas risked all on the creation of the first Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back. Or rather Episode V in what is now the middle trilogy of the Star Wars saga. On this the fate of the Star Wars universe rested. Having your first screen writer die on you whilst the ink had barely dried on the first draft was an inauspicious start. Then came fire and ice. Elstree studios endured conflagration as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining went up in smoke. The first weeks of filming in Norway (a.k.a. Hoth) were a white out and the film went over schedule & over budget,. But in May 1980 the world was treated to a space opera classic that for many remains the defining film of the Star Wars universe.
Mark Burman returns to a snowbound Finse, Norway to hear from some of the veteran crew, draws on his own archive of key personnel from director Irvin Kershner to the hands and face behind Yoda. Stuart Freeborn. Listen to this you must.
