George Blake: The Confession

GEORGE BLAKE: THE CONFESSION (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 5th February 2021

A remarkable interview with the notorious double agent, who recently passed away. George Blake became a senior MI6 officer - even though he had converted to the Communist cause while held as a prisoner in North Korea. He photographed vast numbers of classified documents, and by his own estimates betrayed around 500 agents working for the Western powers. In the late 1980s, the journalist Tom Bower secured the first interview with Blake, in which he freely confessed to betraying his colleagues and described in detail his sensational escape from Wormwood Scrubs Prison in London, and his journey to exile in Moscow.

This radio version was first broadcast in 2009.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: CLASSIC DESERT ISLAND DISCS - HELEN MCCRORY (320kbs-m4a/81mb/35mins)

BBC Radio 4 podcast: 22nd April 2021

Lauren Laverne talks to the actress Helen McCrory, in a programme first broadcast in 2020. Helen McCrory died in April 2021, at the age of 52.

Helen McCrory OBE was one of the most versatile and critically acclaimed actresses working today. On screen she has played Anna Karenina, Cherie Blair (twice), Harry Potter's Narcissa Malfoy and the Peaky Blinders matriarch Aunt Polly. Her theatre roles range from Yelena in Uncle Vanya to Euripides' Medea.

A diplomat's daughter, she spent her early childhood in Africa before continuing her education in the UK. After a bruising and unsuccessful audition at the Drama Centre in London - she was instructed to find out more about life before learning to act - she travelled to Italy where she discovered art and love and came back to try again. This time she passed the audition.

In 1993 she made her mark in Richard Eyre's production of Trelawny of the Wells at the National Theatre and went on to perform leading roles on some of London's most prestigious stages, winning two Olivier Award nominations. She was awarded an OBE for services to drama in 2017.

She met her husband, fellow actor Damian Lewis, when they both starred in a play called Five Gold Rings. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic Helen and Damian, together with the comedian Matt Lucas, co-founded the Feed NHS campaign which raises money to provide hot meals to frontline NHS workers.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: CLASSIC DESERT ISLAND DISCS - KATHLEEN TURNER (320kbs-m4a/79mb/34mins)

BBC Radio 4 podcast: 18th April 2021

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is Kathleen Turner. A versatile actress, she's been the femme fatal in films like Body Heat, parodied that role in comedies like Serial Mom, and played the romantic adventurer in Romancing the Stone. But, she says, ''I never play the victim, because I'm not attracted to a woman who doesn't try''. It's an attitude which must have helped her when she developed rheumatoid arthritis which left her severely bloated and in pain. Presently wowing audiences as Mrs Robinson in London's West End production of The Graduate, she chooses eight records to take to the mythical island.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: CLASSIC DESERT ISLAND DISCS - MURRAY WALKER (320kbs-m4a/87mb/38mins)

BBC Radio 4 podcast: 4th April 2021

Kirsty Young talks to motor racing commentator Murray Walker, in a programme first broadcast in 2014. Murray Walker died in March 2021, at the age of 97.

His commentating career began in 1948 and he finally hung the lip mic at the end of 2001. His trousers-on-fire style of delivery brought excitement, emotion and fanatical obsession to Formula 1 - for many motor racing fans he was motorsport.

He was a petrol-head before the term had even been coined; his father, one of the top motorbike racing champions of his day, ignited his son's life-long love of big noisy engines.

He's talked British fans through so many of the sport's greatest victories - Damon Hill crossing the finish line to win the World Title brought an audible lump to his throat. But also, inevitably, there have been great tragedies too - his live commentary on Ayrton Senna's fatal crash in 1994 was possibly his most professionally demanding.

He says, "I have always believed that Formula One, with its highs and lows, is the ultimate distillation of life."

Desert Island Discs Revisited: Comic Castaways 2 - Vic Reeves

DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: COMIC CASTAWAYS 2 - VIC REEVES (320kbs-m4a/101mb/44mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 2nd May 2021

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the comedian Jim Moir, best known by the name of his alter ego Vic Reeves. Jim was born in Leeds but soon moved to Darlington with his family. He attended the local school and left with one O level in Art. He fulfilled the expectations of his school by getting a job in a factory, completing his apprenticeship and working there for four years.

However, he was bored so he moved to London with three friends. After trying a few different jobs he began running club nights - with music, acts and entertainment. He would hire a venue and the bands and be the compere.

Jim decided to take on the persona of Vic Reeves as it gave him an excuse to act up. A comedy night came up and instead of booking three comedians, he decided to do the whole night himself. Vic Reeves' Big Night Out was born. After teaming up with Bob Mortimer, a solicitor who had been in the audience of one of his shows, the show went from strength to strength. It was a huge success and TV rights were fought over by the BBC and Channel 4. Since then, he has appeared on both channels with a variety of programmes including The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, Shooting Stars and Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased). The programmes have won BAFTA Awards for Originality and Best Live Performance plus British Comedy Awards.

Desert Island Discs Revisited: Comic Castaways 2 - Paul Whitehouse

DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: COMIC CASTAWAYS 2 - PAUL WHITEHOUSE (320kbs-m4a/98mb/42mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 25th April 2021

From Maria Callas to The Sex Pistols.

Comedian, actor and writer Paul Whitehouse shares his castaway choices with Sue Lawley.

Born in the Rhonda Valley in Wales, Paul and his family soon moved to Enfield, North London where he grew up. Paul was never particularly ambitious, but he was bright and got a place at University, although he dropped out in his first year. He went on to work as a plasterer and was quite content, enjoying a bit of humorous banter in the pub with his friends who included Harry Enfield and Charlie Higson.

Harry was first to get employed as a comedian - on Saturday Night Live - and he got Paul and Charlie to write for him. Soon, Paul was a regular contributor to Harry's show Harry Enfield and Chums. But Paul and Charlie were awash with ideas and characters and The Fast Show was born, laden with an influx of catchphrases that swamped common vernacular, such as "Brilliant!" "Very, very drunk" "Suit you, sir!" and "which was nice".

After various acting roles on TV and completing a live tour of The Fast Show, Paul decided to write a situation comedy, and in 2001 the series Happiness was born.

At the 1998 BAFTA Awards, Paul won the Best Light Entertainment Performance prize and The Fast Show won Best Light Entertainment Programme.

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 4th April 2021

From Danny Kaye to Queen.

Comedy performer and writer Matt Lucas shares his castaway choices with Kirsty Young.

As one half of the team that created the hit TV show Little Britain, Matt has been responsible for dreaming up such characters as Vicky Pollard, the Asbo teenager who swapped her baby for a Westlife CD, and Dafydd, the Welsh homosexual who is adamant he's "the only gay in the village".

When he was six years old Matt's hair fell out and as a result he acquired a certain local notoriety - from then on it simply never occurred to him that he wouldn't go on to become famous. At the start of this century, he was still struggling to have his work commissioned and thought of abandoning his career in comedy.

Today, Matt Lucas is one of the most popular and recognisable entertainers in Britain.

Desert Island Discs: Alexei Sayle

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: ALEXEI SAYLE (320kbs-m4a/80mb/35mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 23rd May 2021

Alexei Sayle is a comedian and writer, who began his career just over 40 years ago at the small Comedy Store venue in London, which proved a launch-pad for a new generation of comic stars.

Alexei was born in Liverpool, where his parents were loyal members of the Communist Party: their politics informed almost every aspect of the family’s life, including holidays by train to eastern European countries that were then part of the Soviet bloc.

He won a place at Chelsea School of Art but didn’t thrive as a painter. He began performing with a theatre troupe and - after answering an advertisement - became the compere on the opening night of the Comedy Store. He soon found himself at the centre of a new wave of British comedy. With his tight suits and often abrasive stage presence, he enjoyed successful stand-up tours, appearances on numerous TV shows including The Young Ones, and even a novelty pop hit.

He attempted to launch a career in America, but was fired from a TV series on his 40th birthday. He stepped back from stand-up and devoted himself to writing novels and short stories. More recently, he has returned to live performance, and has also created a number of comedy series for Radio 4.

He lives in London with his wife Linda: they have been married for almost 50 years.

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 22nd to 26th March 2021

Craig Brown presents a series of kaleidoscopic glimpses of The Beatles through time. Drawing on interviews, diaries, anecdotes, memoirs and gossip, he offers an entertaining series of vignettes that capture the mood of an era.

It's a journey that takes us from 9th November 1961 when Brian Epstein first heard the four young men in a sweaty basement, via their mop top haircuts, to the jaw-dropping prices paid for the most trivial of memorabilia. And along the way there is the music, always the exuberant, the playful and ever-changing music.

A Waters Company production for BBC Radio 4.

John Lennon At 80 - 3. John Lennon At The BBC: From The Beatles’ Early Days To His Final Interview

JOHN LENNON AT 80 - 3. JOHN LENNON AT THE BBC: FROM THE BEATLES’ EARLY DAYS TO HIS FINAL INTERVIEW (320kbs-m4a/262mb/1hr55mins)

BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 4th October 2020

Liza Tarbuck explores the BBC's archive of John Lennon's work from his earliest days with The Beatles up to his final interview recorded 2 days before his death in December 1980.

Born on the 9th of October 1940, John Lennon's work both as a musician and as a high-profile peace activist still resonates as loudly today as it did during his lifetime. He appeared frequently on BBC programmes which provide a fascinating insight into his creative output and worldview. His contributions were articulate, often controversial and always searingly honest as he talked about subjects including the Vietnam War, his protracted struggles with the US authorities as he tried and eventually succeeded in securing residency there, the break-up of The Beatles, his treatment by the press and the development of his music throughout the 1960s and 70s.

The featured programmes include his 1971 appearance on Parkinson alongside his wife Yoko Ono, performing his own poetry on Not Only But Also, talking to Bob Harris about his Rock 'N' Roll and Walls And Bridges albums on The Old Grey Whistle Test, an early 'pop profile' for the World Service with Brian Matthew and his explosive 1969 interview with veteran New York Times War Correspondent Gloria Emerson which was captured on film for the BBC's 24 Hours. Also featured are tracks from throughout his solo career which have been painstakingly restored and remixed for the newly released collection, Gimme Some Truth.

JOHN LENNON AT 80 - 2. PART 2 OF SEAN ONO LENNON'S MUSICAL PORTRAIT OF HIS DAD - WITH PAUL MCCARTNEY AND JULIAN LENNON (320kbs-m4a/126mb/55mins)

BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 4th October 2020

A celebration of John Lennon on what would have been his 80th birthday on October 9th.

For the first time in public, Paul reveals to Sean his own memories of meeting John as a teenager in their hometown of Liverpool, their early musical beginnings, writing together, life as a Beatle and beyond. Paul plays an excerpt of a never-before-heard Lennon/McCartney composition - an example of one of their early tunes that didn't make it to the recording studio!

Also in this programme, Sean's elder brother Julian continues exploring his recollections of his father. In the previous episode, Sean's godfather, Elton John shared his own memories of his friendship and musical relationship with John, including the story of John's last ever live performance at an Elton show in New York in 1974.

JOHN LENNON AT 80 - 1. PART 1 OF SEAN ONO LENNON'S MUSICAL PORTRAIT OF HIS DAD - WITH ELTON JOHN AND JULIAN LENNON (320kbs-m4a/129mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 3rd October 2020

A celebration of John Lennon on what would have been his 80th birthday on October 9th.

Presented by his youngest son, Sean Ono Lennon, the programme will delve deep into the Lennon family's musical memories of John. In episode one, Sean and his elder brother Julian chat publicly for the first time about their father.

Both recall time spent in the studio at different points in John's solo career - Julian during the making of the 'Walls and Bridges' album in 1974 and Sean during the recording of 'Double Fantasy', shortly before John's death in December 1980. They chat warmly about their memories of growing up as 'John Lennon's son' and how that reflected on their own musical careers.

Elton John also chats to Sean about his close relationship with Lennon, his admiration of the Beatles as a youngster and the effect that meeting and playing music with John in the 1970's had on him. Elton also explains how he played a pivotal part in Sean's very existence (and ended up as Sean's Godfather as a result).

In Part 2, Sean will be in conversation with his father's friend, bandmate and songwriting partner, Paul McCartney. It will be the first time the pair have spoken together about John, for broadcast.

Sean will also share his own memories on his father's remarkable musical life, which created some of the most important musical milestones of the entire 20th Century.

Daft Punk Is Staying At My House, My House

DAFT PUNK IS STAYING AT MY HOUSE, MY HOUSE (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 25th May 2021

It was 1994, and legendary techno duo Slam were booked to play an event in Disneyland Paris. "We had a couple of days to kill, and a friend got in touch to say he knew these two young French musicians who wanted to give us music they'd made."

The "young French musicians" Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo were still in their teens at that point, and Daft Punk was under a year old. Stuart McMillan distinctly remembers hearing their 4-track demo for the first time; "We were blown away!"

Composed of Orde Meikle and Stuart McMillan, Slam launched independent electronic record label Soma in 1991. It had a very DIY ethos. Along with manager Dave Clarke, they'd overseen a number of influential releases. It was Slam's own track ‘Positive Education' that piqued Thomas and Guy-Manuel's interest. They recognised Slam as kindred spirits, and Soma as the label they wanted to launch Daft Punk, and that's when things went really wild.

This is the story of Daft Punk's earliest beginnings on Glasgow's techno scene.

This uncanny coincidence has got him thinking. To most people, Morris dancing and [raving] rave culture seem so far apart. We like to think we know what sorts of people do what. So, what do these two groups have in common that drives them out into the fields to dance at dawn?

As an accordionist, producer and storyteller, Martin's own work lives somewhere between traditional music, electronic music and theatre. In 2020 he made a piece of audio theatre that linked the ancient traditions of English dancing to the birth of rave in the 1980s, which led him to draw on events from his own life, of dawn Morris dancing and sunrise raves. This documentary explores those themes. Why do we dance at dawn? Is there an innate desire to do so?

Recollecting his experiences with his father and rave friend Becky, Martin uncovers the traditions and rituals surrounding each activity. He speaks to others who have danced at dawn and seeks expert advice from [the] DJ Lee Burridge, who's famous for his full moon parties in Thailand and sunrise sets at Burning Man festival.

Taking all this experience on board, Martin undertakes a solo experiment. Removing all people and connections he drives on his own, in the dark to a remote field near his house with a mission. He wants to find out what it is about the music, the dancing and the surroundings that makes dancing at dawn truly special.

Neil Innes: Dip My Brain In Joy

NEIL INNES: DIP MY BRAIN IN JOY (320kbs-m4a/409mb/2hrs58mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 2nd, 9th & 16th December 2020

Diane Morgan celebrates the life and work of Neil Innes, the music and comedy legend of The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band & The Rutles. A towering talent, occasionally known as the 7th Python & regularly found with a duck on his head. His legacy of music and comedy is rich, inspiring and inspired.

Neil said of his work, "Shakespeare wrote comedies as well as dramas. I'm just like Shakespeare, except with better songs." His influence permeates modern comedy and his back catalogue is diverse and prolific. Neil wrote and performed anarchic rock with The Bonzos, he penned and performed pitch-perfect pastiches of the Beatles for The Rutles, he appeared in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Monty Python's Life of Brian and he is one of only two non-Pythons with a writing credit on Monty Python's Flying Circus – the other being Douglas Adams. He released over 20 albums including How Sweet To Be An Idiot, Innes Book of Records, and Recycled Vinyl Blues. And on top of being comedically and musically gifted, he was also a really nice man. A beautiful, kind, gentle soul. Considered, absurd, and delightful.

We're celebrating the life, work and absurdist tendencies in this three hour collage of scraps and archive. There are old interviews, performances and programmes, conversations with family, friends and fans including his wife of over fifty years Yvonne, Stephen Fry, Adrian Edmondson, Kevin Eldon, Rick Wakeman and Arthur Smith, bandmates Rodney Slater, Phil Jackson, Ken Thornton, and John Halsey (better known to Rutles fans as Barry Wom), TV producer Ian Keill, record producer Martin Lewis, studio engineer extraordinaire Steve James, musical arranger extraordinaire John Altman, and Pythons Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin.

Neil died on Sunday 29th December 2019. He was 75. At the time of his death, he was working on a new album, and a project called Radio Noir, part-audio memoir, part-experimental work of art, part- exploration of the human brain and you will hear some extracts and some unreleased songs throughout the programme – that have never been broadcast.

Produced for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Laura Grimshaw.

NEIL INNES: DIP MY BRAIN IN JOY - 1. BANGS, BELCHES, SMUT & SMOKE (320kbs-m4a/134mb/58mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 2nd December 2020

In Part One, Bangs, Belches, Smut & Smoke, we look at Neil's early life and his musical and artistic influences. And we go out on the road, and into the recording studio, with the group of absurd young men who came together by chance, to mutilate the trad jazz movement of the 1920s, to subvert the new wave of psychedelic pop and to nurture a quite deliberate misunderstanding of anarchy - The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.

NEIL INNES: DIP MY BRAIN IN JOY - 2. EGO WARRIOR (320kbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 9th December 2020

In Part Two, Ego Warrior, we open up the Innes Book of Records, follow Neil on his foray into Children's Television (after all, the Raggy Dolls are dolls like you and me), and we take a look at Neil's approach to songwriting, and his craft of setting beautiful stories to music.

NEIL INNES: DIP MY BRAIN IN JOY - 3. OUCH! (320kbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 16th December 2020

In Part Three, Ouch!, we take a look at Neil's work with the Monty Python team on television, film and record, his work with Eric Idle on Rutland Weekend Television and The Rutles, and how the fictional outfit with a "legend that would last a lifetime" became a living, breathing, and touring band with adoring fans.

FOODMAN - LATE JUNCTION MIXTAPE 09.07.21 (320kbs-m4a/70mb/30mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 9th July 2021

Jennifer Lucy Allan serves up a tasty mixtape concocted by Japanese electronic producer Foodman aka Takahide Higuchi. Based in Nagoya in central Japan, his sound is influenced by everything from Chicago footwork and psych-rock to video game soundtracks and traditional Okinawan folk music. His new album Yasuragi Land is inspired by simple pleasures: eating at Michinoeki (motorway service stations) and visiting his local Sentō (public baths). For his Late Junction mixtape, he reflects on these places of calm, with music discovered at the very service stations and public baths he visits, as well as dynamic percussion from his mother's native Okinawa, some 90s video game music and the chimes of a music box.
