This Cultural Life - 13. Max Richter

THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 13. MAX RICHTER (320kbs-m4a/97mb/42mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 19th February 2022

German-born British composer Max Richter tells John Wilson about his earliest musical influences, including the revelatory experience of first hearing Bach's Double Violin concerto. He reveals how, growing up in Bedford in the early 1970s, a contemporary music-loving milkman would deliver albums by the likes of Philip Glass, John Cage and Steve Reich, musicians who helped inspire Max to pursue his interest in composition. He recalls the raw energy and political engagement of punk bands like Stiff Little Fingers and The Clash whose gigs he saw as a teenager; and how hearing German synthesiser-pioneers Kraftwerk on a BBC nature documentary sparked his interest in electronica. Max also pays tribute to the Italian composer Luciano Berio who tutored Max in Italy and honed his compostional skills.

Max Richter is one of the world's most successful contemporary composers, selling more than a million albums and clocking up over a billion streams. His melodic, evocative compositions have been heard in television soundtracks and films scores, including Arrival, Shutter Island, Mary Queen of Scots, Bridgerton and many more. His albums include Memoryhouse, The Blue Notebooks, the eight hour long composition Sleep, and Recomposed which reworked Vivaldi's Four Seasons. He has also composed for theatre and ballet.

The Collection: Peel Acres - 10. Adam Buxton

THE COLLECTION: PEEL ACRES - 10. ADAM BUXTON (320kbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 4th April 2022

Comedian and podcaster Adam Buxton joins Tom Ravenscroft to explore the legendary record collection of his dad, BBC DJ John Peel - tens of thousands of albums and singles collected over a lifetime. And among the music memorabilia, Tom has a surprise for Adam, in the form of a handwritten letter from David Bowie.

Presented by Tom Ravenscroft
Produced by Kevin Core and Becca Bryers

Track 1: Yoko Ono - Greenfield Morning I Pushed An Empty Baby Carriage All Over The City (from Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band)
Adam gets off to a flying start with his first pick of the day - the debut album from Japanese artist Yoko Ono. Released in 1970, it was recorded and released at the same time as her husband's album - John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band - which shared very similar cover artwork. At the time of release Yoko was still widely blamed for breaking up The Beatles. The title and lyrics of this particular track were derived from her 1964 book Grapefruit.

Track 2: National Lampoon - Old Maid (Southern California Brings Me Down) (from Good-Bye Pop 1952-1976)
Adam's intrigued by an album from American humour magazine National Lampoon, which reached its peak popularity in the 70s and helped launch the careers of many big comedy names, including John Belushi, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray. Paul Jacobs is the guitarist on this Neil Young spoof, who went on to work with Meat Loaf and to write songs for Sesame Street.

Track 3: Fania All Stars - Foofer Soofer (from Delicate and Jumpy)
Fania All Stars were a showcase of musicians signed to the salsa label Fania Records - and so had a constantly revolving line up of members. This was their second studio album, released in 1976.

Track 4: Racing Cars - Downtown Tonight (from Downtown Tonight)
Next, Adam picks out the debut album from Racing Cars, based on the surprising number of copies in the collection. The Welsh pop rock band recorded five sessions for John Peel's show.

Track 5: UB40 - One In Ten
Breaking the usual podcast format, Adam has brought along his first ever record, to hide among John Peel's collection. His favourite track from the compilation is from Birmingham reggae pop band, UB40 - a Top 10 hit which refers to the percentage of the West Midlands workforce claiming unemployment benefits at the time.

Track 6: Pixies - Brick Is Red (from Surfer Rosa)
Adam is a huge fan of the Pixies, synonymous with the 1990s alt rock scene in America. This was their first full length album, released in 1988 - and once bought and then promptly returned to the shop by a teenage Adam Buxton.

Track 7: Ween - Big Jilm (from Pure Guava)
Gene and Dean Ween (not their real names) are the core members of American experimental rock band Ween, whose USP is humour and absurdity.

David Bowie - Sound And Vision [EMI]
National Lampoon - A History Of Neil Young [Epic]
National Lampoon - Old Maid (Southern California Brings Me Down) [Epic]

The Collection: Peel Acres - 9. DJ Mafalda

THE COLLECTION: PEEL ACRES - 9. DJ MAFALDA (320kbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 28th March 2022

Portuguese DJ Mafalda joins Tom Ravenscroft, to go digging in his dad's record collection - helping him explore the many treasures hidden among John Peel's vast archive of records, collected over a lifetime of music fandom and a career as a BBC radio DJ.

Presented by Tom Ravenscroft
Produced by Kevin Core and Becca Bryers

Track 1: Ravi Shankar - Raga Nata Bhairav (from Music from India - Series 8)
Mafalda's first pick is a 1976 album from legendary sitar Ravi Shankar, who has proved a popular choice with a number of Peel Acres guests so far. It has a relatively low catalogue number in John Peel's shelving system…

Track 2: Mike Absalom - Interflora Angel (from Save The Last Gherkin For Me)
Which leads Tom and Mafalda to hunt down record number one - a 1969 album from English pop folk musician Mike Absalom, who blends observational humour into his lyrics.

Track 3: Albert King - Women with Cold Hands (from Truckload Of Lovin')
The striking cover art draws Mafalda to pick up this 1976 album from American blues guitarist and singer Albert King. Along with B.B. King and Freddie King, he was known as one of the "Kings of the Blues" - despite no relation!

Track 4: The Maytals - African Doctor (from Monkey Man)
Track 5: The Maytals - Monkey Man (from Monkey Man)
Jamaican group The Maytals formed in the early 60s and helped introduce reggae to a global audience (and are credited with coining the genre name). Monkey Man was their first big hit in 1970, and shortly after they became Toots and The Maytals - after their frontman Toots Hibbert.

Track 6: Close Lobsters - Just Too Bloody Stupid (from Foxheads Stalk This Land)
Another lucky dip selection; this time from Scottish indie pop band, Close Lobsters - who released this debut album in 1987 (the year Mafalda was born!).

Track 7: Poorsah - Go Right Up In Day
This 12" single is by soca artist Poorsha. Soca music originated in Trinidad and Tobago, and is an offshoot of calypso music, with influences of African and East Indian rhythms.

Track 8: The Dentists - There Was Love On The Floor, So I Walked On The Ceiling (from The Fun Has Arrived)
For Mafalda's final listen, she's selected an EP from indie rock band The Dentists - part of the "Medway scene" - their first release with Belgium label, Antler... as mentioned in the accompanying letter to John.

Rotary Connection - I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun [Universal/Island]
Ravi Shankar - Raga Nata Bhairav [His Master's Voice]
Mike Absalom - Interflora Angel [Saydisc]
The Who - Sparks [Track]
Rotary Connection - I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun [Stateside]

The Collection: Peel Acres - 8. Colleen "Cosmo" Murphy

THE COLLECTION: PEEL ACRES - 8. COLLEEN "COSMO" MURPHY (320kbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 21st March 2022

DJ and audiophile Colleen "Cosmo" Murphy is the latest guest to Peel Acres, helping Tom Ravenscroft make sense of his dad, John Peel's legendary record collection. Originally from Massachusetts, Colleen started her radio career at just 14-years-old and is the founder of listening event, Classic Album Sundays.

Track 1: David Bowie - Life on Mars? (from Hunky Dory)
Colleen wastes no time in tracking down her favourite David Bowie album - with an original press release hidden in the sleeve. Bowie had been commissioned to write English lyrics to the French song Comme d'habitude - but his work was rejected and instead Paul Anka rewrote it to be My Way. Annoyed at the success of Frank Sinatra's version, Bowie wrote the parody Life on Mars? in response.

Track 2: Cymande - Dove (from Cymande)
Track 3: Cymande - Bra (from Cymande)
British funk band Cymande formed in 1971, releasing their debut self-titled album the following year. They were initially more successful in America, but found wider recognition in the following decades after being sampled by various artists, including De La Soul and Grandmaster Flash. Colleen remembers hearing both tracks at The Loft in New York; the invitation-only parties hosted by her friend David Mancuso.

Track 4: Amon Düül II - Soap Shop Rock (from Yeti)
Colleen remembers playing krautrock pioneers Amon Düül II on her psychedelic radio show in college. The band formed in the late 60s and take their name from the political art commune in Munich, where they met.

Track 5: Sylvester - Southern Man (from Sylvester and the Hot Band)
African-American falsetto singer (and flamboyant dresser) Sylvester is best know for his disco hits, including the UK Top 10, You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real). Southern Man, his debut single, is a funk cover of the Neil Young song, which carries an overt anti-racism message.

Track 6: The Cure x François Kevorkian - Hot Hot Hot !!! (Extended Remix)
Colleen is delighted to happen across this remix by her friend, DJ and producer François Kevokian in the 12" singles shed. The Cure are often associated with gothic rock - but the band reject being categorised as one particular genre.

Track 7: The Fall x Zeus B. Held - Hit The North (Part 4)
Next she pulls out a white label 12" by post punk outfit The Fall - who were famously known as John's favourite band. This 1987 single - considered the band's most musically conventional - was remixed by German producer Zeus B Held.

Track 8: Chicken Shack - I'd Rather Go Blind
This 7" single from British blues band Chicken Shack, features the beautiful vocals of Christine Perfect - better known by her married name, McVie - and was released a year before she joined Fleetwood Mac. The song was first recorded by Etta James

Track 9: Ozo - Anambra
Colleen selects a fitting end to the day; a track which would often be played at the end of a Loft party, to help party-goers re-entry into the world. This is the debut release from fusion band Ozo, which appeared on their 1976 album Listen To The Buddha.

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense And Peppermints [Hollywood]
David Bowie - Life On Mars? [EMI]
Cymande - Dove [Janus]
Cymande - Bra [Janus‎]
Amon Düül II - Soap Shop Rock [Liberty]
Sylvester And The Hot Band - Southern Man [Blue Thumb]
The Cure & François K - Hot Hot Hot!!! (Remix) [Elektra]
The Fall & Zeus B. Held - Hit The North (Part 4) [White Label]

THE COLLECTION: PEEL ACRES - 7. CHARLIE BONES (320kbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 14th March 2022

Radio DJ Charlie Bones is Tom Ravenscroft's latest guest to Peel Acres; the home of his dad, John Peel, and his legendary music collection.

John's broadcasting career spanned five decades, over which time he meticulously catalogued tens of thousands of records.

Presenter: Tom Ravenscroft
Producers: Kevin Core and Becca Bryers
Editor: James Cook

Episode Sleeve Notes

Track 1: Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do (from Dropout Boogie)
Charlie's first pick is a 1970 stereo reissue of the debut album from avant-garde, genre-blending, singer-songwriter Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. The LP was first released three years earlier, under a completely different title: Safe As Milk.

Track 2: Ivor Cutler - Lemon Flower (from Jammy Smears)
Scottish humourist poet and musician Ivor Cutler became known for his regular performances on John Peel's Radio 1 show - as well as elsewhere on the BBC. He would often accompany himself on a harmonium. This 1976 album features 31 tracks - the shortest, just 8 seconds long.

Track 3: Mohamed Moneer - Sif Safa (from Yalla - Hitlist Egypt)
Charlie is excited to find this 1990 compilation album from Island Records, featuring a track by Egyptian singer (and actor) Mohamed Mounir, whose musical career spans over 40 years.

Track 4: Erasmus Betschart - Chuerailheli Cow Bells Man's Solo (Pasture) (from Jodel of the Muotatal (Switzerland))
Recorded in 1979, this album features the yodelling voices of cattle herders in Switzerland's Muotatal valley, accompanied by the clang of cowbells. Charlie owns the LP himself and played it on his NTS radio show.

Track 5: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Manaquib Chisti (from En Concert A Paris)
Pakistani artist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is known as one of the greatest qawaali singers in history; qawaali being a form of Sufi Islamic devotional singing. This live album was recorded by Radio France in November 1985. Charlie also mentions another of Nusrat's albums, Magic Touch, which was made in collaboration with producer Bally Sagoo and released on Birmingham-based label Oriental Star Agencies.

Track 6: Cocteau Twins - Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops
Next Charlie pulls out his favourite song by Scottish band Cocteau Twins - who pioneered the 1980s subgenre of dream pop. The trio took their name from a song by another Scottish band, Johnny and the Self-Abusers - who renamed themselves Simple Minds.

Track 7: Coati Mundi - Me No Pop I
This single was a top 40 UK hit for American singer and percussionist Coati Mundi - aka Andy Hernandez - best known for being a member of Kid Creole and the Coconuts. Charlie recommends everyone should watch the video of Coati Mundi singing and dancing his way through Washington Square Park, in New York.

Track 8: Len Liggins - 'Bye 'Bye Brenda (from A Head Full of Ants)
Charlie's only true "lucky dip" selection was this, by Leeds-based singer-songwriter Len Liggens. It turns out Len is also a member of The Ukrainians, along with Peter Solowka from The Wedding Present. The band launched following the success of a special Ukrainian-language John Peel session.

Track 9: Napalm Death - The Missing Link / Mentally Murdered (from Mentally Murdered)
And finally - a 12" single from Napalm Death; pioneers of the grindcore genre. Charlie remembers John playing some of the band's super-heavy but super-brief tracks on his Radio 1 show - in fact, they hold the world record for the shortest recorded song ever: You Suffer at 1.316 seconds.

Tabu Ley Rochereau - Hafi Deo [Soundway]
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Sure 'Nuff 'n Yes I Do [Buddah]
Ivor Cutler - Lemon Flower [Virgin]

The Collection: Peel Acres - 6. LCY

THE COLLECTION: PEEL ACRES - 6. LCY (320kbs-m4a/136mb/60mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 7th March 2022

DJ and electronic musician LCY is Tom Ravenscroft's latest guest to Peel Acres; the home of his dad, former BBC radio DJ John Peel, and his legendary music collection.

John's broadcasting career spanned five decades, until his death in 2004, over which time he meticulously catalogued tens of thousands of records.

Presented by Tom Ravenscroft
Produced by Kevin Core and Becca Bryers

Track 1: Miles Davis - On The Corner (from On The Corner)
LCY's first pick is from jazz trumpeter and bandleader Miles Davis. He'd conceived the album as an attempt to reconnect with the young American audience, who by the early 70s had largely were largely choosing funk and rock music over jazz. The LP was initially panned my many jazz critics, but has since been reappraised and is now considered to be musically ahead of its time.

Track 2: The Jam - Art School (from In The City)
They next pull out the 1977 debut album by mod revival and punk rockers The Jam. The band launched the career of "The Modfather" Paul Weller, who went on to form the Style Council and later had a successful solo career.

Track 3: Digital - Warped 2 (from DubZilla)
Digital, aka Steve Carr, is a drum and bass artist - and fellow Suffolk-dweller, whose interest in music comes from seeing his dad play his own sound system. This 2002 album was release on five 12" vinyls - and John Peel declared it one of his albums of the month on release.

Bonus Track: Madeon - Icarus
Professor Nikki Dibben from the University of Sheffield conducted the first study investigating physiological responses to electronic dance music - and shares her findings with Tom. Icarus was the track used in the study that was associated with the strongest "peak" experience - largely due to its breakdown, build-up, drop structure.

Track 4: Slippery Project - Jump Around (Remix) (from the Absolute Hardcore compilation)
Slippery Project, aka Slipmatt, aka Matthew Nelson is a DJ and producer, who was one of the key figures in the development of UK rave, jungle and happy hardcore. This three-disc compilation was a 1998 release for London label Slammin' Vinyl.

Track 5: The Disturbed - You Make Me Sick (from Totalled Volvo)
This was a 1987 release from US punk rock band The Disturbed. Despite the EP's title, the photo on the sleeve appears to show the band posing in from of a VW Beetle. The band only released one album, but bassist Dave Wilder is now a Grammy nominated songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist - who co-wrote the Macy Gray's hit song, I Try.

Track 6: The Boneless Ones - Give It To You
LCY pulls out another wildcard selection in the form of the first - and only - full length release from US skate rockers The Boneless Ones. The band were only active between '84 and '87… but reformed in 2019 with the promise of new music.

Track 7: Omni Trio - Living For The Future
LCY's final track is a 12" from electronic artist Omni Trio, aka Rob Haigh - who in the 90s developed a unique style, known as ambient drum and bass. This single was released on UK label, loved by both Tom and LCY; Moving Shadow.

The Collection: Peel Acres - 5. Erol Alkan

THE COLLECTION: PEEL ACRES - 5. EROL ALKAN (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 27th February 2022

Electronic DJ and producer Erol Alkan is Tom Ravencroft's latest guest to Peel Acres - helping him explore the many treasures hidden among his dad, John Peel's vast archive of records, collected over a lifetime of music fandom and a career as a BBC radio DJ.

Presented by Tom Ravenscroft
Produced by Kevin Core and Becca Bryers

Episode Sleeve Notes

Track 1: Etta James - Tell Mama (from Tell Mama)
Erol's first selection is a 1968 album from great American soul and blues singer Etta James. The title track was one of the biggest hits of her decades-spanning career. Like many records in the Peel Acres collection, Erol notices John has at some point "corrected" the advertised track lengths.

Track 2: Herbie Goins and the Nightimers - No. 1 In Your Heart (from No. 1 In Your Heart )
Erol is drawn to his next pick by the artwork; "It looks joyful!". American rhythm and blues singer Herbie Goins left Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated in 1965, to front the Nightimers. The following year they released this single (and in '67 an album of the same name), which proved popular with the Mods - and later, Northern Soul fans.

Track 3: 10cc - You've Got A Cold (from Deceptive Bends)
Stockport rock band 10cc have been in Erol's ears a lot recently. He pulls out their 1977 release Deceptive Bends - the first album following the departure of half the founding members, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. The cover was designed by art group Hipgnosis, known for creating some of rock's most iconic artwork.

Track 4: Leo Kottke - When Shrimps Learnt To Whistle (from Dreams and All That Stuff)
This wildcard selection is a 1974 release by American acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke, is completely instrumental and features his typical fingerpicking style (which led to painful tendinitis and a need to alter his technique in the early 80s).

Track 5: Fred Weinberg - Animosity (from The Weinberg Method of Non-Synthetic Electronic Rock)
Erol next grabs an album which graces his own collection - from American sound designer and composer Fred Weinberg - which was basically an electronic rock music experiment. He compares it to the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - a now-closed sound effects unit known for its pioneering work in music technology and for scoring shows such as Doctor Who.

Track 6: Merrell Fankhauser and HMS Bounty - Things (Goin' Round In My Mind) (from Things!)
The pair are surprised by how much they enjoy their next wild card selection, the only album from US psychedelic band Merrel Fankhaser and HMS Bounty. Tom compares their sound to sixties rock and rollers The Bobby Fuller Four.

Track 7: Depth Charge - Shaolin Buddha Finger
Erol remembers listening to this track on pirate radio in the mid-90s. The 12" promo from British DJ Depth Charge (one of several aliases of J Saul Kane) samples dialogue from kung-fu film Shaolin vs. Lama.

Track 8: Keith Hudson and Family Man - Pick A Dub (from Pick A Dub)
For his final pick, Erol once again chooses a title track - this time from an album considered one of first (and greatest) records to intentionally profile pure dub; from Jamaican producers and musicians Keith Hudson and Aston "Family Man" Barrett.

Erol Alkan - Spectrum [Phantasy]
Etta James - Tell Mama [MCA/Chess]
Herbie Goins & The Nightimers - No. 1 In Your Heart [EMI]
10cc - You've Got A Cold [Mercury]
Leo Kottke - When Shrimps Learn To Whistle [Beat Goes On]

The Collection: Peel Acres - 4. Nubya Garcia

THE COLLECTION: PEEL ACRES - 4. NUBYA GARCIA (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 20th February 2022

Jazz saxophonist and band leader Nubya Garcia is the latest guest to Peel Acres, helping Tom Ravenscroft make sense of his dad's eclectic music collection - tens of thousands of albums, singles and related paraphernalia.

Presenter: Tom Ravenscroft
Producer: Kevin Core

Track 1: Augutus Pablo - Shake Up (from Augustus Pablo Presents... Ital Dub)
Nubya is drawn to her first pick because of the "beautiful green fern" on the cover (although Tom suggests it's actually likely something a little more… herbal). The Jamaican roots reggae and dub artist and producer was known for popularising the melodica. The album was mixed by King Tubby, a hugely influential sound engineer who played the mixing desk like an instrument and was key to the development of dub in the late 60s.

Track 2: Ornette Coleman - Cross Breeding (from Ornette on Tenor)
Nubya's love of jazz comes from being exposed to her mum's record collection as a kid. She's excited to find an album by one of her all time favourites, Ornette Coleman - on which he's playing tenor saxophone rather than his usual alto. Coleman was a principal founder of free jazz - an experimental improvised genre, which takes its name from his 1961 album.

Track 3: Uthawolfu Amentkentshane - Ntombi Mgiyakuthanda (from Soweto Street Music: The Definitive Collection)
Next Nubya pulled out a 1984 compilation of artists originating from Soweto - a township in Johannesburg, South Africa which has strong ties to a number of different music genres. Among them is mbawanga, which heavily influenced Paul Simon's hugely successful 1986 album Graceland.

Track 4: Dr Ross - Thirty Two Twenty (from Detroit Blues: The Early 1950s)
From one compilation to the next, hailing from another location with a rich musical heritage - Detroit, Michigan - a US city Nubya would love to visit. Her selected track is by Doctor Ross, who usually performed as a one man band, simultaneously singing and playing guitar, harmonica and drums. And, as if that wasn't enough to think about, he was left-handed but played a right-handed guitar, upside down. Nubya learnt to "feel her way round" music by improvising over blues tracks.

Track 5: African Stone - Right Choice
Next Nubya pulls out a 7" single by Dennis Bovell, a producer and musician she's long admired. A member of the British reggae band Matumbi, Dennis is also well known for his long term collaboration with dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. He was awarded a MBE in the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to music.

Track 6: Alain Permal and Mauritius Police Band - Danse Dans Mo Les Bras
The Mauritius Police Band are exactly that; a specialist music unit within the island nation's police force. "Danse Dans Mo Les Bras" translates from French into English as "Dance in My Arms". The 1960 single was recorded with Alain Permal, a singer specialising in Séga - one of the country's major music genres, originating among its former slave populations.

Track 7: Al Campbell - Cherry Baby
Nubya was beyond thrilled to rediscover this 1983 single by Al Campbell, which she heard on a tour bus seven years ago and has been searching record stores for ever since. The Jamaican reggae singer was part of the first generation of dancehall artists whose vocals have been gracing records sicne the late 60s, when his group Thrillers tried out at Studio One. Which leads us nicely to the final track…

Track 8: Dub Specialist - Better Dub (from Better Dub From Studio 1)
Final track and another compilation album pick from Nubya. Studio One was one of Jamaica's most renowned record labels and recording studios. Founded by Clement Dodd, "the Motown of Jamaica" helped shape and grow the island's reggae, dub, ska, rocksteady, and dancehall movements in the 60s and 70s - launching the career of many artists, including a young Bob Marley (and previous pick Al Campbell).

Nubya Garcia - Pace [Concord Jazz]
Augustus Pablo - Shake Up [Trojan]
Ornette Coleman - Cross Breeding [Avid Jazz]
Nubya Garcia - Pace [Concord Jazz]
Doctor Ross - Thirty Two Twenty [Not Now Music]
Uthawolfu Amentkentshane - Ntombi Mgiyakuthanda [Audiotrax]
African Stone - Right Choice [Tempus]
Al Campbell - Cherry Baby [Bromac Production]

The Collection: Peel Acres - 3. Four Tet

THE COLLECTION: PEEL ACRES - 3. FOUR TET (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 13th February 2022

Kieran Hebden, aka electronic artist Four Tet, is the latest guest to rifle through Peel Acres and help Tom Ravenscroft make sense of his dad's vast record collection. Not only is Kieran a musician, but an avid vinyl collector himself - partly inspired by listening to John Peel on the radio.

Presenter: Tom Ravenscroft
Producer: Kevin Core

Track 1: The 13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me (from The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators)
Kieran is immediately drawn to three copies of The 13th Floor Elevators' debut LP - which is thought to be the first rock album to include the descripter "psychedelic" in its title. They choose to listen to the original mono copy, which Tom suspects his dad bought at the time of its 1966 release, as he's signed his name on the sleeve as "John Ravenscroft".

Track 2: Tomorrow - Revolution (from Tomorrow)
Kieran next hones in on the debut (and only) album by 1960s psychedelic rock band Tomorrow - who recorded the first ever John Peel session for BBC Radio 1. Kieran is no stranger to the LP, usually preferring the mono version, as "it's even crazier sounding" than the stereo.

Track 3: Stanley Winston - No More Ghettos in America
Next pick is a 7" single - and one Kieron hunted down himself after hearing it on John's show (it was one of the DJs favourite records). Very little is known about the singer, Stanley Winston and this 1970 release may be his first and only.

Track 4: Mellow Candle - Heaven Heath (from Swaddling Songs)
Mellow Candle were a progressive folk rock band from Ireland; three school friends who's only album was commercially unsuccessful on release in 1972 - but has since received critical acclaim. Singer Clodagh Simmons remembers John Peel writing an early positive review of their set at the Wexford Festival.

Track 5: Caleb - Baby Your Phrasing is Bad
Kieran was super excited to come across this ultra rare 7" single by Caleb Quaye - the older half brother of reggae singer Finlay. Caleb is best known as a talented session musician, working particularly closely with Elton John.

Track 6: Nirvana - Love Buzz
Among some of the collection rarities, Kieran pulls out his last pick - not one, but two copies of American alt rock band Nirvana's 1988 debut single. Love Buzz was a cover, originally recorded by Dutch group, Shocking Blue.
