Archive On 4: Frankenstein Lives!

ARCHIVE ON 4: FRANKENSTEIN LIVES! (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 2nd March 2021

Mary Shelley's extraordinary, ground-breaking novel about the creation of a living being who becomes a monster. Cultural historian and writer Christopher Frayling considers how the story of Victor Frankenstein and his creature has become a creation myth for our age.

Frankenstein is one of a handful of works whose title has passed into the language of everyday life and has been adapted countless times for cinema, radio, television and theatre - with each new generation discovering the unique power of the original.

In the overwhelmingly Christian society of 1818, the notion of man creating life was both unthinkable and blasphemous. Two centuries later, the moral dilemmas of the original story continue to challenge and perplex us. After Dr Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant in 1967, he proclaimed "I am the new Frankenstein'. Since then we have truly entered an age of genetically and surgically modified nature - from cloned sheep to disease-resistant crop strains. Inevitably these developments are met with newspaper headlines that scream Frankenstein!

Christopher Frayling uses his expert knowledge to lead us through the rich and unsettling history of the Frankenstein myth, amidst a host of chilling archive recordings and insightful contributions from filmmakers, writers and scientists. He explores how and why, 200 years after it was born, Mary Shelley's nightmare creation is still very much alive and kicking.

Eagle: The Space Age Weekly

EAGLE: THE SPACE AGE WEEKLY (320kbs-m4a/65mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 8th May 2021

Sir Tim Rice explores the lasting appeal of British magazine Eagle and the impact of its flagship character Dan Dare.

Eagle ran in two main incarnations between 1950 and 1994. Dan Dare, often referred to as "Biggles in space", is regarded in some circles as the greatest British science fiction hero of the 20th century

In this feature we chart the influences behind the comic, and explore the life of its creator Marcus Morris, a fascinating man who began the publication because of his concern over 'horrific' US comics which presented 'disturbing' storylines which he felt 'corrupted British youth'.

The programme reveals how Dan Dare was originally envisaged as a space chaplain before becoming the popular astronaut. It also examines the work of illustrator Frank Hampson who introduced technology years ahead of its time. Hampson knew the Space Age was on its way while serving in the Second World War and seeing the German VI rockets. He made the Dan Dare strips as realistic as possible by dressing his team in spacesuits and uniforms, basing the look of the fictional characters on his colleagues.

We reveal how the stories had educational value and, along with Dan Dare, we look at other Eagle offerings including Shakespeare's plays and the Greek myths which ran as comic strips.

Featuring contributions from author Philip Pullman, Sally Morris the daughter of Eagle Creator Marcus and Eagle Society member David Britton.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2010.

Tupac Shakur, Hip Hop Immortal.....

TUPAC SHAKUR, HIP HOP IMMORTAL..... (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 24th November 2021

Poet Al Letson recalls the life of Tupac Shakur, a conflicted African American folk hero. The son of a black panther, Tupac Shakur, trained as an actor, posed as a street thug and became a best selling rapper. He continues to be mythologised, revered and highlighted like no other. He was shot and killed 18 years ago, yet he is still the third biggest selling hip hop artist.

A restless revolutionary he led a conflicted life, causing moral outrage in one verse and capturing the voice of the disenfranchised in another. He continues to inspire the disenfranchised around the world and has even been chosen by the Vatican, as someone who 'aimed to reach the heart of good minded people.'

He carried the conflict between community struggle and personal gain. He wrote the feminist elegy "Brenda's Got a Baby" and the abusive "Wonda Why They Call U Bitch."

His music is still the most requested on UK prison radio. Exploring the the complexity of Tupac's life and the contending identities that defined him, Al will ask what is it about Tupac's life that still resonates?

An audio snapshot of the city of Washington DC, captured in and around the moment of Barack Obama's inauguration for a second term as President of the United States.

Gathered by Marika Partridge of Washington's "Hear Now" audio collective, the portrait of the city that emerges from their months of recording is vibrant, idiosyncratic and aurally involving...

Pieces Of A Man

PIECES OF A MAN (128kbs-m4a/25mb/26mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 21st July 2011

Poet Lemn Sissay explores the life of the influential activist, musician, writer and 'godfather of rap' Gil Scott-Heron, who died in May 2011.

Following in the footsteps of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes, The Black Arts movement and jazz and blues musicians such as John Coltrane and Billie Holiday, Gil Scott-Heron helped pioneer the fight for racial equality and developed a new way of fusing music with hard-hitting political poetry. His story reflects the modern African-American struggle, from segregation in the South to triumph in the White House.

Lemn will speak to Gil about his childhood, spent with his feisty grandmother in Tennessee, and his teenage years in New York at the height of the Civil Rights movement, punctuated by the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and when black artists, musicians and writers were beginning to find a voice in modern American society.

Gil spent four decades in the music business during which time he joined forces with Stevie Wonder to campaign for a Martin Luther King national holiday, paved the way for the birth of hip hop, influenced some of the biggest names in popular culture and wrestled with a long term addiction to drugs.

Featuring interviews with Chuck D, Greg Tate and Benjamin Zephaniah.

Gil Scott Heron died on May 27th 2011.

This programme was first broadcast in 2009.

Steve Lamacq Album Club - Primal Scream's Screamadelica

STEVE LAMACQ ALBUM CLUB - PRIMAL SCREAM'S SCREAMADELICA (320kbs-m4a/173mb/1hr15mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 22nd September 2021

Steve Lamacq plays Screamadelica in full to mark thirty years since its release.

Released on 23rd September 1991, Screamadelica was Primal Scream's third studio album. Heavily influenced by the acid house scene, the record was produced by the late, great Andrew Weatherall, who remixed original recordings made by the band into dance-oriented tracks. The ambition was clear from the first single Loaded, released early the year before - the band's first hit single. It features dialogue and vocal samples lifted from Peter Fonda in his 1966 film The Wild Angels, The Emotions' I Don't Want to Lose Your Love and a drum loop from an obscure Italian bootleg remix of Edie Brickell & New Bohemians' What I Am. The following single, Come Together, also charted, and suddenly they could afford to buy an Akai S1000 sampler - which helped to form the sound of the upcoming record. The album covers the feeling of a big night out, so big that it's lasted all weekend - something to which the acid house crowd could relate to. Featuring fragments of rock, blues, jazz, gospel and country, the album was named by Melody Maker as the finest of the year and has only grown in reputation of the subsequent years. In 1992 it won the inaugural Mercury Prize, ahead of records by the likes of Saint Etienne, U2 and Erasure.

HERMIONE LEE - TOM STOPPARD: A LIFE (OMNIBUS) (320kbs-m4a/154mb/67mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 19th September 2021

Tom Stoppard's childhood is disrupted when his family escape Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.

Hermione Lee's evocative and immersive biography tells the story of the man and his work. Since 1964 Stoppard has been writing for the theatre, big screen, television, and radio,. His plays are among the most studied of the last century.

Abridged in five parts by Katrin Williams

Hermione Lee is one of our leading literary biographers, and with access to private papers, diaries and letters, interviews with the playwright's friends, and Stoppard himself she has created an intimate portrait of the writer. Here we learn of his formative years as a young child forced to flee Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia; growing up in India and then England; his activism and campaigning on behalf of Eastern European and Soviet prisoners of conscience; the influence of, and his friendship with Vaclav Havel, and always his work, the writing, rehearsing, casting and his ever present humour.

Tom remains at the forefront of British theatrical life, even in a moment of crisis. His most recent, personal and highly acclaimed play, Leopoldstadt, fell victim to Covid-19, when its run in the West End was suspended in March, 2020, before resuming in August, 2021.

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 27th October 2021

Written by Joaquin Rodrigo in 1939, the Concierto de Aranjuez is a guitar classic. It was written amid the chaos of the Spanish Civil War, and in circumstances of poverty and personal tragedy. This programme explores how the piece touches and changes people's lives.

The composer's daughter Cecilia Rodrigo explains how the blind composer was inspired by the fountains and gardens of the palace of Aranjuez. Nelício Faria de Sales recounts an unforgettable performance deep inside one of Brazil's largest caves, while David B Katague remembers how the piece got him through a difficult period of separation from his family in the Philippines.

Guitarist Craig Ogden explains the magic of the piece for a performer, and actor Simon Callow recalls how hearing the piece was a formative experience for him during his schooldays, when it turned rural Berkshire into a piece of Spain.

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 26th December 2021

Richard Osman is a broadcaster, TV producer and writer who co-presents the quiz show Pointless on BBC One. His first novel, The Thursday Murder Club, was a publishing phenomenon, selling more than a million copies, and the follow-up became one of the fastest-selling titles since records began.

Richard grew up in Haywards Heath in West Sussex and his early passion for television led to him devising quiz shows and programme formats from a young age. After graduating from university he worked for a number of production companies where he helped to develop and produce shows including Total Wipeout, Deal or No Deal and 8 out of 10 Cats.

In 2009 Richard became a co-presenter of Pointless alongside Alexander Armstrong. It was not his intention to move in front of the camera, but he was given the job after taking on the role of co-host while the show was being developed.

In 2020 Richard published his debut novel, The Thursday Murder Club, the story of four friends in a retirement community who band together to solve cold cases. It was an instant hit, selling 45,000 copies in its first three days on sale. Steven Spielberg has bought the film rights.

Richard lives in London and is writing his third novel featuring his resourceful retirees.

Desert Island Discs: Neil Gaiman

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: NEIL GAIMAN (320kbs-m4a/78mb/34mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 28th November 2021

Neil Gaiman is a writer whose list of titles spans many forms from novels, including American Gods, to children's stories such as Coraline and the comic book the Sandman.

Neil grew up in East Grinstead and after finishing school he became a journalist and then wrote short stories and books. One of his early commissions was writing a companion to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. In 1989 he began to write the Sandman series for DC Comics which were illustrated by his friend Dave McKean.

The Sandman became the first comic ever to receive a literary award - the World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story – and is credited with bringing comics from an underground art form into the mainstream. It is currently in production as a television series.

Neil started writing what became the fantasy novel Good Omens in the 1980s but put it aside to concentrate on the Sandman. When his friend Terry Pratchett suggested they go back to it and finish it together, they turned Neil's initial 5,000 words into a novel which was adapted for radio in 2014 and became a television series starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen.

Neil wrote his first children's book, The Day I Swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish, in 1997. His next children's book Coraline, about a little girl adrift in a parallel universe, was initially deemed to be too frightening to publish but is now a family favourite.

Neil is married to the musician Amanda Palmer and lives in upstate New York.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: TRACEY ULLMAN (320kbs-m4a/78mb/34mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 26th September 2021

Tracey Ullman was the first woman to be offered her own television sketch show – both in Britain and America – and has starred in film and television dramas alongside Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett and Hugh Grant. The Emmy-winning Tracey Ullman Show ran for four seasons in the US and provided the launch pad for the Simpsons.

Tracey was born in Slough and as a child she would impersonate people and put on shows for the amusement of her mother after the death of her father. At 12 she won a scholarship to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London and worked in repertory theatre and the West End in London before her television career took off. She was one of the stars of the BBC’s primetime sketch show Three of a Kind alongside David Copperfield and a young Lenny Henry.

In 1985 she moved to Los Angeles with her husband, the producer Allan McKeown, where her uncanny impressions of Americans from all walks of life won her acclaim and awards in equal measure.

After the death of her husband Tracey returned to the UK in 2016 and was soon back on our screens in a new sketch series, Tracey Ullman’s Show, which showcased her enduring talent for sending up the powerful and the famous, including Dame Judi Dench, Angela Merkel and Theresa May.

Desert Island Discs Revisited: Football - John Motson

DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: FOOTBALL - JOHN MOTSON (320kbs-m4a/97mb/42mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 19th September 2021

John Walker Motson, OBE, also known as Motty, has been commentating on football since 1971. He covered more than 2000 games on television and radio, including all the major football championships, 29 FA Cup finals (with an additional five replays), 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 200 England games. At the age of 72 he's just retired.

Known not only for his footballing knowledge and his voice, he is often recognised by his knee-length sheepskin coat. His passion for football was ignited by his father, a Methodist minister for 40 years, who on his one day off each week would take his only son to watch football. The first game John attended was at Charlton Athletic when he was seven, and the excitement of it inspired him to create scrapbooks of footballing facts and collect match programmes.

After five years at boarding school, where he wasn't allowed to play football, he left at 16 after one term doing A levels. He joined the Barnet Press as a trainee reporter and then moved onto the Sheffield Telegraph. When BBC Radio Sheffield, one of the first six local radio stations, came on air, he was one of the reporters pulled in to give match summaries. He then moved to the BBC as a sports assistant in radio, before joining the Match of the Day team on television.

He has been supported in his career by his solicitor wife, Annie, who meticulously kept details of every match in thick A4 books which John used for his preparation. He was awarded an OBE for services to football and in May 2018 he was honoured by BAFTA with a Special Award for his lifetime's work.

SOUND OF CINEMA - 335. COME TOGETHER AT ABBEY ROAD (320kbs-m4a/135mb/58mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 25th December 2021

Radio 3's 'Sound of…' marks the 90th anniversary of one of the most famous of all recording studios, London's Abbey Road. Presenters Matthew Sweet and Louise Blain team up for a special programme for Christmas to mark Abbey Road's important and illustrious history of making music for film - and more recently for the gaming world. Together they tour the building, taking a keen interest on the legendary Studio 1 - meeting some of the people who have shaped soundtrack recordings there. The programme is lavishly illustrated with music from the Abbey Road catalogue.

Abbey Road began its venture into film in the early 80s and quickly attracted the likes of Miklós Rózsa, John Williams and Stephen Spielberg, Jerry Goldsmith, and James Horner etc. It continues to play a major role in music for international film. One of the first significant scores to be recorded there was Raiders of the Lost Ark, which was soon followed with prestigious catalogue of titles: The Return of the Jedi, The Last Emperor, RoboCop, Aliens, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, Skyfall, Gravity, The Shape of Water, Black Panther and so on.

Matthew reflects both on the history, in conversation with engineers Merik Stiles and Ken Townsend, and with Hollywood composer James Newton Howard (The Hunger Games, The Dark Knight, Fantastic Beasts) who has recently been recording there. Meanwhile, Louise talks with Isabel Garvey about links with the world of Gaming. Titles such as Final Fantasy and Call of Duty have passed through Abbey Road's doors. She meets composer Ilan Eshkeri who rectory recorded 'Ghost of Tsushima' there, and with cellist Caroline Dale, who explains some of the challenges that face the musician working on soundtracks.

SOUND OF CINEMA - 334. THE RETURN OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS (320kbs-m4a/135mb/58mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 18th December 2021

It's 20 years since the launch of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings so Matthew devotes the whole of this week's programme to one of the most ambitious of all film scores - Howard Shore's remarkable 10 hour Wagnerian epic. Matthew is joined by the musicologist Doug Adams who worked alongside the composer deconstructing some of the incredibly complex ingredients that constitute Shore's musical story-telling. It's a system based on Richard Wagner's leitmotif, where musical themes and statements are used to represent characters and ideas in the films. When these themes are combined and varied symphonically, they present a complete aural picture of the narrative to complement and enhance the story on the screen.

Together, Matthew and Doug unpick some of the main musical ideas in Shore's score and reveal just how far-reaching the music for LOTR is.

Sound Of Cinema - 333. Marni Nixon

SOUND OF CINEMA - 333. MARNI NIXON (320kbs-m4a/134mb/58mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 11th December 2021

Matthew looks back on the career and recordings of soprano Marni Nixon, a "ghost singer" who provided the vocals for several leading actresses often without audiences being aware. With the release this week of Steven Spielberg's new version of 'West Side Story', Matthew considers the 1961 film in which Nixon provided the singing voice of Natalie Wood, without receiving a credit. She was also the singing voice of Deborah Kerr in 'The King and I' and 'An Affair to Remember', and of Audrey Hepburn in 'My Fair Lady'. And she filled in a few of Marilyn Monroe's notes on 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend' from 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'. Although she was well known on the concert stage as a soprano, and even recorded works of Stravinsky conducted by the composer himself, she was largely unknown as a singer in films, and it was not until more recently that she was finally credited for her soundtrack recordings.
