Digital - Goldie’s Artist Mix

DIGITAL - GOLDIE’S ARTIST MIX 21.12.20 (320kbs-m4a/138mb/60mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 21st December 2020

Goldie selects Digital, one of his favourite DJs, to provide a 60 minute music mix.

Digital aka Steve Carr is a game changer on the DnB scene, known exclusively for his old skool beats, dubby basslines and weighty tracks. Steve's musical tag comes from his love of tampering with electronic equipment from the early age of fourteen.

Involved in music all of his life, Digital's main influence was his Dad who ran a sound system for thirty years. From 1989 to 1991 Digital was busy "running around playing reggae" with sound systems, until the fateful period when "all this rave business" crept in.

In 1991 the scene started to grow heavily in his home town of Ipswich and Digital started hiring out his sound system to various promoters holding raves in the area. This is when he started checking out the scene for himself. In the same year Digital met fellow DJ Danny C. The two eventually joined forces in 1994 to produce 'Split Personality' under the guise of Authorized Riddim.

Steve then met Rupert Parkes (best known as Photek) who helped Steve get underway with putting together his own studio. Digital's first solo release was 'Touch Me' on Timeless Recordings in 1995, but it was the phenomenal 'Spacefunk' that really showcased his talents alongside the track 'Down Under' which were released on Metalheadz, the record label founded by Kemistry & Storm and Goldie. With his name firmly on the map a host of releases followed for the likes of Moving Shadow, Photek Productions and Creative Source.

Caution: This mix contains "backs to the wall" bangers from the likes Doc Scott, Photek, Alex Reese, Dillinja and many more!

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 24th October 2020

Sister Bliss from Faithless delivers the guest mix on the release of their new album 'All Blessed'.

Faithless are one of the best known dance acts of the last 25 years, successfully negotiating both the club and pop worlds.

Their 1995 2nd single 'Insomnia' put them firmly on the map, which was cemented with their debut album 'Reverence' the following year.

Over subsequent years they released a further 5 albums, with the most recent 'The Dance' arriving in 2010, so the new album is their first for 10 years.

Here Sister Bliss tells the story of those last 10 years and how the album emerged, and we hear how they went about finding new vocalists to replace Maxi Jazz.

The program finishes with a mix from Sister Bliss, which contains some of her favourite current and treasured tracks.

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 8th October 2020

From the Rolling Stones to Beethoven, cricket's all-rounder shares his castaway choices with Sue Lawley. From November 1989.

If you were told that this week's Desert Island Discs castaway took ballet lessons as a child, was a moderately angelic choirboy and now plays golf, badminton and cricket, as well as walking long distances for charity, the name of Ian Botham might well not spring immediately to mind. But it will indeed be Mr Ian Botham who'll be talking to Sue Lawley about his exploits on and off the cricket field, as well as discussing his ambition to captain the England team again.

Desert Island Discs: Annie Nightingale

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: ANNIE NIGHTINGALE (320kbs-m4a/80mb/35mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 19th July 2020

Annie Nightingale was BBC Radio 1’s first female presenter and is its longest-serving DJ, celebrating her 50th anniversary at the station this year.

Born and brought up in south west London, she fell in love with the romance and mystery of radio through her father’s meticulous tuning of their home set to broadcasts from exotic places like Prague and Hilversum. On leaving school at 17, she spent a year on a journalism course in central London.

After relocating to Brighton, she worked her way up through local newspapers to the national press and magazines and eventually, by the mid-1960s, to TV. She interviewed the Beatles as a young journalist, and gave early support to artists including David Bowie, Ian Dury, Eminem and Primal Scream. In 1970, she was the first woman DJ to join Radio 1 with a Sunday evening show. From 1978 to 1982, Annie was the sole female presenter on the BBC TV music show The Old Grey Whistle Test, the only woman to have held the job. Her excitement for new music and musical genres from acid house to grime, hasn’t wavered.

She currently hosts a weekly Radio 1 show called Annie Nightingale Presents… (on air on Wednesdays between 1 and 3 am) and has received countless awards from Caner of the Year to Commander of the Order of the British Empire, which she received this year for services to radio.

Annie has a son and a daughter from her first marriage. She is twice divorced and lives in London.

MARY ANNE HOBBS - PRINCE’S SIGN O’ THE TIMES AT 33 1/3 (320kbs-m4a/393mb/2hrs52mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 30th July 2020

Our 33 1/3 celebrations explore iconic albums when they turn 33 and 1/3 years old, which also happens to be the speed that vinyl albums are played at.

Sign O’ The Times was released on the 30th March 1987 by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. It followed Parade, Prince’s final recording with The Revolution, and the commercial breakthroughs, 1999 (released in 1982) and Purple Rain (1984). Rolling Stone described it as ‘tough and inventive and exuberantly experimental’ while the New York Times said that ‘virtually all by himself’ Prince was ‘more versatile, more eclectic than ever.’

Across the show we’ll hear from Susan Rogers, who was right at the heart of the album's creation, and Duane Tudahl, senior researcher for the Prince Estate Archives, who knows many of the stories from behind the scenes. We will reflect on the incredible influence of the record across all four sides of the vinyl which embraces funk, pop, rock, gospel, dance music, slow jams and more and hear from some of the musicians who’ve been inspired by Prince.

In part shaped by the reception to his previous two projects, 1986’s Parade and the film Under The Cherry Moon, the stories surrounding Sign O' The Times include smashed guitars, the dissolution of The Revolution, record label battles and happy accidents in the studio with engineer Susan Rogers.
