Skee Mask - Resident Advisor Mix (RA.864)

SKEE MASK - RESIDENT ADVISOR MIX (RA.864) (320kbs/237mb/1hr43mins)

Resident Advisor download: 26th December 2022

Skee Mask is one of dance music's greatest crossover stories of the past decade, with new albums greeted with the attention usually reserved for an Aphex Twin or a Caribou. ("Loved seeing this on r/indieheads," said one Reddit user, on the release of the 2021 LP Pool.) It's not hard to understand why: albums like Compro, he blends well-worn dance music tropes with incredible, detailed soundscapes and spine-tingling melodies. And on his 12-inches, he brings that sensibility to the dance floor, with an approach probably best described as articulate. Even on his most ambient of tracks, everything is in its right place. Along with founders the Zenker Brothers, his music outlines everything that makes Munich outfit Ilian Tape one of the best techno labels going.

On the decks, it's kind of a different story. It might surprise you if you only know his albums, but Skee Mask is an incredible DJ, balancing his predilection for hip-hop and UK-informed sounds with laser-focused techno. He can adapt to all sorts of situations—there's an incredible recording of him DJing with four of the best grime and drum & bass MCs in the business—and on his RA Podcast he focuses on the techno side of things, with nearly two hours of pacey techno and creative mixing, with dips into acid, electro, garage and more. It's a party-starting mix from a genuine star, perfect for getting through the holiday doldrums or pre-gaming your NYE plans. Like Skee Mask's best records, it's something to enjoy in any number of settings.

Jarvis Cocker - Good Pop Bad Pop

JARVIS COCKER - GOOD POP BAD POP (320kbs-m4a/156mb/67mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 9th to 13th May 2022

Jarvis Cocker delves into the contents of his loft and considers each item before deciding whether to keep or cob (throw away) and, in doing so, explores the origins of his creativity and what exactly makes good pop work and why bad pop fails.

This inventory takes the form of a coming of age memoir revisiting Sheffield in the 1980s against the backdrop of the miners strikes and rising unemployment. With the aid of a collection of 1980s pop objects and a gallery of interesting shirts, Jarvis charts the early days of the band Pulp, from the humiliation of a concert in the school hall at lunchtime to an invitation to record a session for John Peel. This period of his life, living in a disused factory while trying to get the band off the ground, comes to a sudden end after a disastrous stunt to impress a girl changes his life - and his attitude to music making.

Jarvis Cocker grew up in Sheffield in the 1960s and 70s, founding the band Pulp with his friends while he still was at City School despite not being able to play an instrument. The band went on to perform regularly in local venues in the 1980s until eventually they found fame in the 1990s with the success of the single Common People, which made their name, and the albums His 'n' Hers (1994) and Different Class (1995).

EDDIE ROBSON - WELCOME TO OUR VILLAGE, PLEASE INVADE CAREFULLY - SERIES 2 (320kbs-m4a/383mb/2hrs46mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 24th May to 28th June 2020

Series two of Eddie Robson's sitcom about an alien race that have noticed that those all-at-once invasions of Earth never work out that well. So they've locked the small Buckinghamshire village of Cresdon Green behind an impenetrable force field in order to study human behaviour and decide if Earth is worth invading.

The only inhabitant who seems to be bothered by their new alien overlord is Katrina Lyons, who was only home for the weekend to borrow the money for a deposit for a flat when the force field went up.

So along with Lucy Alexander (the only teenager in the village, willing to rebel against whatever you've got) she forms The Resistance - slightly to the annoyance of her parents Margaret and Richard who wish she wouldn't make so much of a fuss, and much to the annoyance of Field Commander Uljabaan who, alongside his unintelligible minions and The Computer (his hyperintelligent supercomputer), is trying to actually run the invasion.

Written by Eddie Robson
Script-edited by Arthur Mathews

Original music written and performed by Grace Petrie
Producer: Ed Morrish.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October/November 2014.

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 9th February to 8th March 2020

Katrina Lyons was only visiting Cresdon Green, the village where she grew up, to borrow some money from her parents. But when she tried to head back to London, it turned out alien beings known as the Geonin had lowered a force field around the village and were refusing to let anyone in or out.

Unfortunately almost everyone in the village is too cowardly, apathetic, polite or stupid to stand up to this alien menace, so Katrina has no choice but to start the resistance movement herself. In the cricket pavilion.

WELCOME TO OUR VILLAGE, PLEASE INVADE CAREFULLY - PILOT (320kbs-m4a/67mb/29mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 9th February 2020

The Geonin are not your typical alien invaders. Instead of the usual all-at-once approach to global domination (which usually fails, they've noticed) they've decided to start small. They've encircled a small English village with an impenetrable heat wave, preventing anything coming in or out.

With Cresdon Green as their base, they will learn about humankind, using their knowledge to effectively and efficiently spread their domination over the rest of the world, bit by bit.

Katrina just came back to borrow some money from her parents. And, having been turned down, she's really in no mood to stick around - but the Geonin are not letting anyone in or out, and she has tickets to the theatre in London. So what choice does she have but to start The Resistance?

WELCOME TO OUR VILLAGE, PLEASE INVADE CAREFULLY - 1. TAKING OVERS (320kbs-m4a/66mb/29mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 16th February 2020

In this episode, the force field around the village is keeping out all the rain, so the villagers can no longer moan about the weather. Uljabaan realises this means they're moaning about him instead.

Whilst he tries to construct a device to simulate rain inside the force field, Uljabaan distracts the village with a cricket match - aliens versus humans, with Richard captaining the humans. Katrina sees an opportunity to sabotage Uljabaan's computer - if she can keep the match going long enough.

WELCOME TO OUR VILLAGE, PLEASE INVADE CAREFULLY - 2. MINIMUM VOLUME (320kbs-m4a/66mb/29mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 23rd February 2020

Uljabaan is working on an education programme for after the invasion, creating a list of books suitable for children to read. His chosen advisor is Mrs Leeson from the charity shop. Katrina is confident she could do a better job, and hopes she could use it for subversive purposes - so she volunteers. But can she sneak anything past Uljabaan? And can she convince Lucy she's not really being a traitor?

WELCOME TO OUR VILLAGE, PLEASE INVADE CAREFULLY - 3. POWER BLOCK (320kbs-m4a/66mb/29mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 1st March 2020

Uljabaan is busy with a construction project and asks Margaret to help with some routine duties in the village - collecting data, checking up on the man they put down the old well, that sort of thing. Katrina is dismayed - he's too busy to oppress the humans, so he's getting them to do it to each other.

But the construction project involves opening up the force-field that surrounds the village. Can Katrina and Lucy sneak a message into the outside world?

WELCOME TO OUR VILLAGE, PLEASE INVADE CAREFULLY - 4. LITTLE GREEN LIGHTS (320kbs-m4a/66mb/29mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 8th March 2020

Uljabaan's superior officer Gryvook is coming for an assessment visit. Uljabaan is hoping to get the go-ahead to invade the rest of Earth - but first he has to prepare a welcome banquet. Tradition dictates he should serve a human child... which could create an awkward atmosphere in the village.

Meanwhile Richard is helping him with the invasion budget, and the figures just aren't adding up. It seems set to be a disaster - can Katrina exploit this to get the invasion cancelled permanently?

Special guest: Geoff McGivern

It resulted in one of the great novels of childhood, and one of literature's most unforgettable heroines. The Forum - Uruguay 1930: The First Football World Cup

THE FORUM - URUGUAY 1930: THE FIRST FOOTBALL WORLD CUP (320kbs-m4a/100mb/43mins)

BBC World Service broadcast: 17th November 2022

As the spotlight falls on Qatar for the 2022 Fifa World Cup, we tell the story of how the world's biggest sporting spectacle began, in Uruguay in 1930.

How did a small South American nation of just two million people, thousands of miles from football's centre of power in Europe, come to launch this major global competition? We discuss the fractious international relations, the political cunning, and the sporting excellence behind the successful bid.

We learn how football helped shape a nation riven by civil war for much of its short existence, and hear about the tournament itself - the unfinished stadium, the dodgy refereeing decisions and, for some of the teams, the sheer ordeal of just getting there.

Rajan Datar is joined by Andreas Campomar, a writer and publisher from London and author of Golazo! A History of Latin American Football; Dr Philippe Vonnard, a historian specialising in the internationalisation of sport at the University of Fribourg and the University of Lausanne, both in Switzerland; and Brenda Elsey, a professor of Latin American sports and cultural history at Hofstra University, New York.

Music To Scream To - The Hammer Horror Soundtracks

MUSIC TO SCREAM TO - THE HAMMER HORROR SOUNDTRACKS (320kbs-m4a/66mb/29mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 28th October 2022

Curse of the Werewolf, The Brides of Dracula, Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell – films from the height of Hammer Films' prolific output in the late 1950s and 1960s. Many of the horrific music soundtracks, carefully calibrated to set the pulse racing, were composed by leading British modernists of the late 20th century. Hammer's music supervisor Philip Martell hired the brightest young avant-garde composers of the day – the likes of Malcolm Williamson (later Master of the Queen's Music), Elisabeth Lutyens, Benjamin Frankel and Richard Rodney Bennett made a living scoring music to chill the bones to supplement their concert hall work.

Prising open Dracula's coffin to unearth the story of Hammer's modernist soundtracks, composer and pianist Neil Brand explores the nuts and bolts of scary music – how it is designed to psychologically unsettle us – and explores why avant-garde music is such a good fit for horror. On his journey into the abyss, Neil visits the haunted mansion where many of the Hammer classics were made, at Bray Studios in Berkshire, and gets the low-down from Hammer aficionado Wayne Kinsey, film music historian David Huckvale, composer Richard Rodney Bennett, and one of Hammer's on-screen scream queens, actress Madeline Smith.

Producer: Graham Rogers
