De La Soul Hip Hop Playlist - 50 Years And Rising

DE LA SOUL  HIP HOP PLAYLIST - 50 YEARS AND RISING (320kbs-m4a/276mb/2hrs)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 20th July 2023

BBC 6 Music is proud to present this exclusive playlist by Maseo and Posdnuos of De La Soul, who have selected their favourite joints to celebrate 50 years of hip hop, featuring artists such as Queen Latifah, Anderson .Paak, Wu-Tang Clan and Monie Love.

De La Soul formed in 1988 in the village of Amityville on Long Island, New York, and released their debut album '3 Feet High and Rising' the following year. The trio charmed the world with laid-back tracks such as 'Me Myself and I', 'Eye Know' and 'The Magic Number'. Considered a hip hop masterpiece, the album showcased a new sound of eclectic sampling, quirky lyrics, and witty skits, and contributed to the evolution of the genre. Their follow-up, 'De La Soul is Dead' in 1991, featured much-loved tracks 'Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)' and 'A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'.

The group have released nine innovative albums during their career, and at the 65th Grammy Awards in February 2023, Pos performed a segment of their song 'Buddy' as part of the ceremony’s tribute to fifty years of hip-hop. Days later, group member Trugoy passed away at the age of 54. In the same month, Gorillaz released the deluxe edition of their album 'Cracker Island', featuring De La Soul on the song 'Crocadillaz', Trugoy’s final recording credit.

August 11th 2023 marks 50 years to the day when DJ Kool Herc started cutting up funk tracks to create extended breaks and got on the mic whilst DJing at a party in the Bronx. The cultural and musical effects of this detonation are felt globally and 6 Music’s Hip Hop Forever season celebrates this legacy across the Summer.
