De La Soul Hip Hop Playlist - 50 Years And Rising

DE LA SOUL  HIP HOP PLAYLIST - 50 YEARS AND RISING (320kbs-m4a/276mb/2hrs)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 20th July 2023

BBC 6 Music is proud to present this exclusive playlist by Maseo and Posdnuos of De La Soul, who have selected their favourite joints to celebrate 50 years of hip hop, featuring artists such as Queen Latifah, Anderson .Paak, Wu-Tang Clan and Monie Love.

De La Soul formed in 1988 in the village of Amityville on Long Island, New York, and released their debut album '3 Feet High and Rising' the following year. The trio charmed the world with laid-back tracks such as 'Me Myself and I', 'Eye Know' and 'The Magic Number'. Considered a hip hop masterpiece, the album showcased a new sound of eclectic sampling, quirky lyrics, and witty skits, and contributed to the evolution of the genre. Their follow-up, 'De La Soul is Dead' in 1991, featured much-loved tracks 'Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)' and 'A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'.

The group have released nine innovative albums during their career, and at the 65th Grammy Awards in February 2023, Pos performed a segment of their song 'Buddy' as part of the ceremony’s tribute to fifty years of hip-hop. Days later, group member Trugoy passed away at the age of 54. In the same month, Gorillaz released the deluxe edition of their album 'Cracker Island', featuring De La Soul on the song 'Crocadillaz', Trugoy’s final recording credit.

August 11th 2023 marks 50 years to the day when DJ Kool Herc started cutting up funk tracks to create extended breaks and got on the mic whilst DJing at a party in the Bronx. The cultural and musical effects of this detonation are felt globally and 6 Music’s Hip Hop Forever season celebrates this legacy across the Summer.

Blur At The BBC

BLUR AT THE BBC (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 9th July 2023

Featuring classic single and album releases from their entire career, alongside interviews with presenters across BBC radio.

From their very first album Leisure and singles She's So High and There's No Other Way, through Modern Life is Rubbish to the battle of Britpop and the huge success of Country House and Girls and Boys, via The Great Escape, Blur and 13 to their brand new album, these long-time friends talk through the highs, lows, emotional gigs, scraps and reunions.

Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and David Rowntree remember their first rehearsals, influences and early chaotic performances as Seymour, before they were picked up by Food Records and then nearly dropped, before their mischievous, satirical and angry critique of British culture becoming more American in Parklife, brought them a completely new audience.

Blur are half art-school and half squat-punk, according to Graham, with very personal lyrics and intense competitiveness matched by the emotions of audience response and a love of playing new music with colleagues, who are more like a gang, but can only stay together when they are all getting on.

They have long and close relationships with all the presenters featured here, from the early days of Evening Session with Mark Goodier, followed by Jo Whiley and Steve Lamacq and in depth career conversations with Stuart Maconie.

Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah & GAIKA - Late Junction Session

BONJO IYABINGHI NOAH AND GAIKA - LATE JUNCTION SESSION (320kbs-m4a/29mins/67mb)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 4th August 2023

Verity Sharp shares the sounds of our latest exclusive collaboration session - a musical meeting of minds between vocalist and producer GAIKA and master percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah of the dub ensemble African Head Charge.

GAIKA is an artist once described as 'Britain's most vital rapper'. His sound is wide-ranging and sometimes cinematic, combining elements of grime, dancehall, R&B, electronic and soundscape, with lyrics that often reflect social issues and the causes he champions. His latest album Drift will be released in September, and is an experimental ensemble work of ‘nostalgic escapism’ made alongside collaborators including Bbymutha and Kidä.

Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah is a master percussionist and frontman for the psychedelic dub ensemble African Head Charge, which he formed in 1981. Bonjo started in the 1970s as a session hand percussionist with artists like Desmond Dekker, before meeting the producer Adrian Sherwood, his collaborator of more than forty years. Their new album A Trip To Bolgatanga is their first release in twelve years, and takes the form of a musical journey to Bonjo's current hometown in north Ghana.

Desert Island Discs: Toto Wolff

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: TOTO WOLFF (320kbs-m4a/98mb/43mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 30th July 2023

Toto Wolff is CEO and Team Principal of the Mercedes Formula 1 motor racing team. He has led the team to an unprecedented seven consecutive drivers' championships – six with Lewis Hamilton - and eight consecutive constructors' championships. He is the most successful manager in Formula 1 history, and arguably one of the most successful managers in any sport.

Toto was born Torger Wolff in Vienna. When he was eight his father was diagnosed with a brain tumour and died when Toto was 15. Toto found himself looking after his mother and sister from a young age which he believes contributed to the strength of character he developed as an adult.

Toto's original ambition in motorsport was to be a driver, and he started competing in his late teens. Following the deaths of drivers Ayrton Senna and then Roland Ratzenberger, his sponsor withdrew support, which forced him to give up his dream. He turned his attention to business and made a fortune as an entrepreneur.

In 2009 he bought a stake in the Williams Formula 1 team and four years later bought a 30% stake in the Mercedes team.

Toto is married to the former racing driver Susie Stoddart and they divide their time between the UK and Monaco. Their six-year-old son Jack is already showing an interest in karting.

Desert Island Discs: Damian Lewis

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: DAMIAN LEWIS (320kbs-m4a/97mb/42mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 5th December 2014

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the actor, Damian Lewis.

As part of the wave of British talent that's crashed onto America's shores in recent years his impact has made a deep impression on the creative landscape. His role as Sergeant Brodie in Homeland saw him win both an Emmy and Golden Globe and along with Band of Brothers, The Forsyte Saga and a long list of other credits, he now ranks as one of our most well recognised and highly regarded performers.

Things didn't always look so peachy: aged 11, and in the school production of Princess Ida, he forgot the entire third act and stood mute in front of a packed auditorium. Tellingly, rather than scuttling into the wings with shame he soldiered on and by 16 he knew performing was, more than anything, what he wanted to do.

He says, "I am a person who is ambitious. I'm ambitious to get the very best from every moment and even if that's just taking my children to the zoo ... I want it to be the best it can be.".
