THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 12. STING (320kbs-m4a/96mb/42mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 25th December 2021

As leader of rock band The Police, and as a multiple-Grammy winning solo artist, Sting has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide over his four decade career. In conversation with John Wilson, Sting explores some of the people and places that helped shape his creativity. He recalls his working class upbringing in the Tyneside shipbuilding communities, and how hearing The Beatles inspired his musical ambitions as a child. Sting explains why, at the height of their international success, he split The Police in the mid-eighties. He also reveals how Miles Davis and other jazz musicians, and classical composers including Bach and Prokofiev, inspired his new musical direction as a solo artist.

Archive On 4: That's Edutainment!

ARCHIVE ON 4: THAT'S EDUTAINMENT! (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 22nd February 2022

Are the values of education and entertainment truly compatible? Matthew Sweet asks if learning can or should be fun.

When we watch a high-end TV documentary do we learn anything? Or do we simply think we have? With lessons from the archive, this is an hour long look at the links between education and fun.

We attend Radio 4's King Street Junior for a historical re-enactment and go down Sesame Street, an early example of edutainment that worked. A 1970's adult education series called On the Move, with a young Bob Hoskins playing a removal man who has trouble reading and writing, helped enormous numbers of people with literacy problems. It accidentally became cult viewing in the process.

The same cult status was accorded to the first late night Open University broadcasts, although the values of good television and undergraduate teaching initially clashed, sometimes about the appropriate colour of shirts.

In his capacity as academic, Matthew talks to Dr Fern Riddell, whose PhD he supervised. Fern chose broadcasting and writing rather than lecturing or teaching as a career and she explains how injecting historical authenticity into TV dramas like Ripper Street might help us see past eras more clearly, if backed by the right research.

And, with the help of Harvard Professor of Education Meira Levinson, Matthew wonders whether Homer Simpson is an appropriate vehicle for the study of philosophy.

Meanwhile, are some of the ideals of Public Service Broadcasting changing in the digital age? Nowadays the strictly educational programmes like OU material and schools broadcasting are no longer part of the general broadcasting landscape, meaning we're less likely to stumble upon them. Put Public Service Broadcasting into a popular search engine and you might not end up learning about the BBC mission statement, but something completely different.

Paris-Zurich-Trieste: Joyce l'European

PARIS-ZURICH-TRIESTE: JOYCE L'EUROPEAN (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 29th January 2022

The Irish cultural industries have in recent decades managed to turn James Joyce into a valuable tourist commodity - 'a cash machine', 'the nearest thing we've got to a literary leprechaun.'

Joyce would surely have disapproved. "When the soul of man is born in this country," he wrote, "there are nets flung at it to hold it back from flight. You talk to me of nationality, language, religion. I shall try to fly by those nets." That is precisely what he did, leaving Ireland behind and living more than half his life across Continental Europe.

As Anthony Burgess put it, "Out there in Europe the modernistic movement was stirring," and by placing himself in the cultural cross-currents of cities like Trieste, Rome, Zurich, Paris & Pola, where he experienced the early rumblings of Dada, Psychoanalysis, Futurism et al, Joyce became a part of an endlessly plural social and linguistic explosion, far removed from the monolithic oppressiveness of Ireland.

Backed up by interviewees including Colm Tóibín, John McCourt and Liv Monaghan and illustrated by rich archive recordings, Andrew Hussey argues it was the deliberate rupture of leaving home - taking up "the only arms I know - silence, exile and cunning" - that allowed Joyce to develop the necessary breadth of vision and literary skill to write his greatest works. The Dublin of Ulysses itself becomes, according to Tóibín, 'a Cosmopolis... another great port city like Trieste."

For Hussey, who has himself lived and worked as a writer in Paris for many years, Joyce was not only a great pathfinder, he also offers an inspiring trans-national vision of Europe and the world just at a time when borders are tightening and the darker shades of nationalism are once again looming large.

Breaking Through

BREAKING THROUGH (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 podcast: 10th August 2021

Breaking, also known as break-dancing, born in New York City in the 1970s, is set to make its debut at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.

Four-time breaking world champion, BoxWon (Benyaamin Barnes McGee), traces how breaking went from Bronx block parties to NYC's downtown art scene, to the world.

Speaking to legends of breaking, such as Rock Steady Crew's Ken Swift and B-Boy Glyde from Dynamic Rockers, BoxWon reveals how punk impresario, Malcolm McLaren, helped breaking become a worldwide craze in the 1980s - before it vanished.

But when the mainstream got bored, breaking didn't die - it just went back underground, only to re-emerge a decade later more extreme than ever.

Breaking is once again a global phenomenon, with pro dancers coming from all corners of the world - Russia, Japan, and South Korea are now home to some of the world's very best.

But when the International Olympic Committee confirmed breaking as a new sport for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, many people were taken by surprise.

The last time they had heard of breaking was back in the 1980s - a fad which swiftly disappeared with shoulder pads and leg warmers.

Breaking Through tells the fascinating story of how this dance-form survived and evolved outside of the media spotlight, fuelled by the scene's die-hard devotees.

Now, as it attracts global corporate sponsorship and demands for more stringent rules and regulations, we hear about the breaking world's own internal battle to maintain its integrity.

King Louis The First Of Britain

KING LOUIS THE FIRST OF BRITAIN (320kbs-m4a/63mb/27mins)

BBC Radio 4 podcast: 20th July 2021

The great jazz trumpeter and vocalist Louis Armstrong died 50 years ago today, in New York. In his near 70 years on Earth, the man known to his fans as "Satchmo" and "Pops" made friends and created admirers wherever he played. It was no different in Britain.

Louis came here first in 1932 and lastly in 1968. He influenced many jazz performers including one of this country's finest trumpeters, Byron Wallen, who first picked up the trumpet after hearing "Satchmo" play.

In this programme- "King Louis the First of Britain", Byron sets out to find out just why Louis made such a connection with people here - a connection that is just as strong today.

Why Time Flies (And How To Slow It Down)

WHY TIME FLIES (AND HOW TO SLOW IT DOWN) (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 podcast: 4th June 2021

Armando Iannucci travels through time - discovering why it seems to accelerate alarmingly as he gets older and what, if anything, can be done to slow it down.

How exactly does the human brain calculate the passing of time? Why are the results often so distorted, with time either dragging or flying by? Armando meets physicists, psychologists and philosophers who help him unravel the emotional, physical and cultural factors which affect our perception of time.

Along the way he finds out how time flies... for flies.

Neuroscientist David Eagleman explains how he attempted to simulate the experience of time slowing down during a road accident, by throwing participants off a 150 foot high platform. Would they be able to decipher flickering images which would normally flash by too quickly?

Physicist Adrian Bejan suggests that Armando's brain has simply worn out, generating temporal discrepancies. He argues that as people age, the rate at which their brain processes visual information slows down, making time speed up.

Can the phenomenon be explained by mathematics. Kit Yates explains that each moment of our lives, every hour, day or week, becomes a smaller and smaller fraction of our entire life.

Psychologist Ruth Ogden, has conducted experiments to test how people of all ages estimate the passage of time, including under lockdown conditions. She says the reason our perception of time varies so dramatically lies in the way we form memories. Children’s lives are filled with new experiences, creating rich memories which make time seem to pass slowly. As we age, we have fewer new experiences, fewer vivid memories, and time rushes by.

To slow down time we must inject new, exciting experiences into our lives... like listening to this programme for example.

.....But Still They Come

.....BUT STILL THEY COME (320kbs-m4a/63mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 9th February 2022

"...But Still They Come' explores the enormous impact and influence of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds, telling the story of the recording of the original album, the various incarnations produced in the 35 years since its release and the 2012 version, re-recorded for a new generation.

This programme explains how and why Jeff Wayne began working on a concept album based on H.G. Wells' science fiction masterpiece and the years of hard work it took to realise his vision.

In the summer of 1978, the UK album charts were dominated by Disco and Punk, with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack firmly entrenched at number one. It was an audacious move and a huge gamble to release a double concept album based on a Victorian science fiction novel. But the compelling blend of progressive rock, classical music, Richard Burton's narration and the fascinating story struck a chord with music fans all over the world and the album became a massive hit, supported by the singles Forever Autumn and Eve of the War.

Guests contributing recollections of the part they played in Jeff's creation include David Essex who voiced The Artilleryman and Justin Hayward who sang Forever Autumn. The programme also contains never-before-heard studio interaction with Richard Burton, David Essex and Jeff Wayne during the original recording sessions.

In the years since its release The War Of The Worlds has morphed in to live stage shows, computer games and apps. Now Jeff has re-interpreted the record for a 21st century audience with a new recording featuring Liam Neeson and Gary Barlow (who both contribute to this programme), and Joss Stone.

DH Lawrence - The Rainbow

DH LAWRENCE - THE RAINBOW (320kbs-m4a/261mb/1hr54mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 20th & 27th June 2021

Sexual awakenings, transgressive same-sex love and internalised repression are explored as Lawrence's characters try to find happiness and fulfilment in uncertain times.

'DH Lawrence: Tainted Love’ dynamically puts centre stage Lawrence's daring writing on the complexity of love. The Rainbow dramatised by Linda Marshall Griffiths.

‘DH Lawrence: Tainted Love’ is a pairing of two novels 'The Rainbow' and 'Women in Love' linked by Ursula Brangwen. Sexual awakening, transgression and repression are explored as his characters try to find happiness and fulfilment in uncertain times. Set in a mining town in Nottinghamshire, 'Tainted Love' is a celebration of Lawrence at his most daring, pushing the boundaries of sexuality in the dawning of the Twentieth Century.

Seen through the eyes of Ursula, ‘The Rainbow’ spans three generations of the Brangwen family from 1840s to 1905 exploring the complexity of desire, sexuality and liberty. As Ursula reflects on her family history, she defiantly questions the choices open to women, rejecting the path taken by her mother Anna who found fulfilment in childrearing and finding inspiration in the advice of her grandmother Lydia, a Polish refugee, who tells her to seek someone who will love her for what she is, not for what he wants. Upon publication in 1915 the novel was suppressed on the grounds of obscenity, all copies were destroyed and it remained banned in Britain for 11 years under the Obscene Publications Act 1857.

The Gatsby Factor

THE GATSBY FACTOR (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 25th September 2021

Recorded on both sides of the Atlantic - Sarah Churchwell explores the enduring popularity of The Great Gatsby as a novel and as a source of inspiration for film and stage adaptations.

Back in 2011, it became a 'major motion picture' for the fourth time in its life - in a version by Baz Luhrmann.

In Britain, academic and broadcaster Sue visits the Northern Ballet and Wilton's Music Hall in London - both with versions of Gatsby

While in New York, she hears about the locations for the novel - the extreme wealth of north shore Long Island where Gatsby has his mansion, and the contrasting 'valley of ashes' where the poorer characters live.

Featuring luminaries at the New York Times who consider why this novel, more than any other, has burned its way into American consciousness.

How was Scott Fitzgerald in this the slimmest of novels, and with Gatsby the vaguest of protagonists, able to crack 'the kernal of the American fable'?

Archive On 4: The Medium Is The Message

ARCHIVE ON 4: THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE (320kbs-m4a/131mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 6th July 2021

Generation X author Douglas Coupland explores the ideas, sound and vision of media seer Marshall McLuhan who in the 1960s coined the phrases "the medium is the message" and "the global village".

Marshall McLuhan was the first great prophet of what would become digital mass media and indeed the global media village - a thinker and writer of near supernatural foresight.

Trained as a literary scholar, throughout his career McLuhan not only examined the relationship between form and content in the media itself, offering dazzling arguments for the importance of medium over content, but anticipated the very idea of online networks, virtual reality, multiple interfaces, social media and most importantly of all, how new technologies rewire us by stealth, endlessly transforming our identities and our communities. "We shape our tools and thereafter our tools shape us," he said.

Drawing on cutting-edge thinking about networks and cybernetics, McLuhan foresaw a fully wired, connected world, which would bring to an end the isolated consumption of print. New cross-border (effectively online) communities would form, breaking old political barriers, creating genuinely new kinds of electronic identity. But with this McLuhan offered a warning: older ideas of privacy and the self would evaporate under new media he said, leading to the rise of what he called 'discarnate' man - the lost, disembodied user extended across an unrelenting, unforgiving electronic global nervous system.

McLuhan's ideas seem more prescient than ever. As Douglas Coupland puts it: 'The future has never happened so quickly, to so many people, in such an extreme way - just as Marshall predicted, an uncanny prophet of our own digital age.'

Contributors include novelist Tom McCarthy, DJ Spooky, Andrew McLuhan, biographer Philip Marchand, the media theorists Shannon Mattern and Bernard Dionysus Geoghegan, Zak Kyes the graphic designer, philosopher James Garvey, filmmaker Jonathan Meades and former network engineer Tung-Hui Hu, who has written on McLuhan and 1970s guerrilla television.

ARCHIVE ON 4: THE WOMAN-MACHINE (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 26th June 2021

While the history of electronic music includes many notable men whose stories have been frequently celebrated, the genre has also provided a space for a wide range of extraordinary women to create a musical room of their own.

Working with machines meant being able to sidestep many of the hurdles that stood in the way of women aspiring to a musical career, such as access to orchestras, commissions and concert halls, and an over-riding failure to be taken seriously by the male musical gate-keepers. Elizabeth Alker examines the connections between early pioneers such as Eliane Radigue and Daphne Oram (who gained access to studios thanks to the second world war), those musicians who followed in their immediate wake such as Suzanne Ciani and Laurie Spiegel, and today’s generation of female composers.

Anna Meredith, Holly Herndon, Afrodeutsche and JLin all speak with Elizabeth about their own work and the debt they owe their predecessors. Central to the story is the composer and academic Pauline Oliveros, who founded the San Francisco Tape Music Centre, and whose theories around deep-listening as a feminist act shape so much of the texture of the music created by the women and men who followed her.

This is music, Elizabeth argues, which has an emphasis on tone and texture. This lends it a particular quality making it both distinct from its male equivalent and also profoundly beautiful and rich.

ARCHIVE ON 4: GAGARIN AND THE LOST MOON (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 10th April 2021

On 12 April 1961, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became an explorer like none other before him, going faster and further than any human in history, into what had always been the impenetrable and infinite unknown.

Raised in poverty during the Second World War, the one-time foundry worker and a citizen of the Soviet Union became the first human to fly above the Earth in the vastness of space.

In doing so he became an instrument in The Cold War – an ideological battle between the superpowers: East versus West, communism versus democracy.

Dr Kevin Fong tells the story of how 27 year old Yuri Gagarin came to launch a new chapter in the history of exploration and follows the cosmonaut's one hour flight around the Earth.

The Soviet Union's triumph in 1961 was the event that galvanised the United States to win the Space Race: to send the first people on the Moon by the end of the decade. Yuri's own ambitions to voyage to the Moon were frustrated by his political masters, a faltering Soviet lunar space program and two tragic accidents.

As well as presenting archive recordings, Kevin talks to space historians and writers:

Tom Ellis, historian at the London School of Economics
Stephen Walker, author of 'Beyond'
Slava Gerovitch, author of Soviet Space Mythologies' and 'Voices of the Soviet Space Program'
Andrew Jenks, author of 'The Cosmonaut who couldn't stop smiling'
Cathleen Lewis, curator at the National Air and Space Museum

Actor Stewart Campbell is the voice of Yuri Gagarin. Tony Turner is Soviet space program founder Sergei Korolev. Nicholas Murchie is General Nicolai Kaminin, head of cosmonaut training.

Technical production is by Giles Aspen and Jackie Margerum.

Co-writer and producer: Andrew Luck-Baker of the BBC Radio Science Unit.
