STEVE LAMACQ ALBUM CLUB - THE AVALANCHES' SINCE I LEFT YOU (320kbs-m4a/148mb/64mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 18th August 2021
Steve Lamacq plays The Avalanches' masterful debut album in full, as part of a week-long celebration of the art of sampling.
Released in the UK on XL Recordings in 2001, The Avalanches were an Australian noise-punk group before changing direction for their first record. It was initially a concept album called Pablo's Cruise, about a man chasing a woman he loved from port to port around the world - and remnants of that original idea still remain. Estimates of exactly how many samples there are on the album range from around 900 to over 3,000 - mostly recorded from vinyl records. It features the title track and the bonkers surprise hit Frontier Psychiatrist. The album was a top ten hit here in the UK but after its success the group went very quiet, not following up the record until 2016's Wildflower.
