THE FIRST TIME WITH... TONY VISCONTI (320kbs-m4a/134mb/58mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 17th February 2019
As part of 6 Music Loves Berlin weekend, Matt Everitt chats to acclaimed producer Tony Visconti about working with David Bowie on the Berlin album trilogy, plus other fascinating key musical moments from his life.
It’s hard to underestimate Visconti’s impact on the evolution of ground-breaking music, having worked his sonic magic on not only Bowie’s records but for artists as diverse as T Rex, Badfinger, Iggy Pop, Thin Lizzie, Rick Wakeman, The Boomtown Rats, Adam Ant, Ralph McTell, The Moody Blues, Sparks, Morrissey, Kaiser Chiefs, The Good, The Bad & The Queen (and many, many more).
In this candid chat, Visconti reveals – with the help of many a colourful anecdote - his musical upbringing in New York, his first band (and its terrible name), what drew him to producing, and how that career grew and grew. And hasn’t stopped – including reuniting with Bowie for his final two albums, The Next Day and Blackstar.
Listen out for tales of a mischievous Mick Jagger trying to sabotage Bowie’s recording of The Lodger – the third in the Berlin trilogy. Plus Visconti transports us to the earlier scenes of creating Low and Heroes in the German city, revealing some of the secrets of how he and Bowie recorded those records, such as the singer’s very last-minute approach to writing lyrics.
Other insights include Visconti’s unusually friendly working relationship with Morrissey (despite reaching an impasse about meat eating). Also find out about Marc Bolan’s unusual music-making techniques on a budget (it involves pliers), and what Visconti thinks about Nirvana’s cover of The Man Who Sold the World.
And, of course, the super-producer reveals what it was like working on Bowie’s final two albums – and how the latter, Blackstar, nearly became a full-on jazz record.

JIM MORRISON'S WILL TO BE WEIRD (320kbs-m4a/410mb/2hrs58mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 8th December 2018

Paris Blue
PARIS BLUE (320kbs-m4a/65mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 8th February 2019
Jazz writer Kevin Legendre explores the encounter between American modern jazz and the French New wave in Paris in the late 1950s and 60s.
Paris in the civil rights era was a hub of artistic collaboration as well as a kind of political refuge - a destination for American jazz musicians escaping racial prejudice and turbulence at home, finding new creative encounters abroad.
As segregation raged in the US, artists from Miles Davis and Bud Powell to Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk felt liberated in the city. Paris was the first foreign city Miles Davis ever visited and it was here he met Picasso. Sartre and Jean Cocteau. "It was the freedom of being in France and being treated like a human being...” he wrote, “It changed the way I looked at things forever. I loved being in Paris and Paris was where I understood that all white people were not the same; that some weren't prejudiced."
The admiration was mutual - French cinephiles loved American jazz. The film score became a key area of collaboration as jazz musicians worked closely with a younger generation of radical directors that made up the French new wave. These scores elevated French films to new levels of intensity, cool and atmosphere.
Some of the musicians' great but little known work is recorded in these movies. But underlying the beautiful work, this story is one of political exile as well as cultural refuge. For a moment Paris became a jazz capital of the world as well as the free-thinking centre of Europe - a rebuke to prejudice in America, even as it had growing racial tensions of its own.
Recorded in and around the city, Kevin Legendre meets musicians, filmmakers and writers to explore this incredible moment of exile and exchange, and asks if Paris is still the city of freedom and tolerance it once was for Black artists.
Guests include jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, film director Bertrand Tavernier, composer Martial Solal, jazz writer Geoff Dyer, historians Kevi Donat and Ginette Vincendeau, bass player Henri Texier and playwright Jake Lamar.

Shine Like Tokyo - Northern Soul Goes East!
SHINE LIKE TOKYO - NORTHERN SOUL GOES EAST! (320kbs-m4a/63mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 5th February 2019
It's 40 years since DJ Russ Winstanley unleashed the Wigan Casino on the world playing Northern Soul to thousands of young people in the club's legendary all-nighters.
The 70s were the heyday of the music genre and the Wigan Casino even beat New York's Studio 54 for title of Billboard Magazine 'best disco in the world' in 1978.
Northern Soul is often thought to be firmly rooted in place and time but four decades on from the opening of the Wigan Casino, Annie Nightingale discovers how it's capturing the imagination of people as far east as Japan.
She looks back at the roots of Northern Soul before hearing from DJs spinning their discs in Kobe, a Northern Soul band in Tokyo and regulars at night spots in several Japanese cities.
Soulies in England and Japan reflect on what it is that helps them 'keep the faith' while Annie tries to work out if there's a connection between the Northern England of the 70s and the Japan of 2013.

Soul Music: Series 27 - 2. Shine On You Crazy Diamond
SOUL MUSIC: SERIES 27 - 2. SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 26th December 2018
Shine On You Crazy Diamond discussed by voices including David Gilmour of Pink Floyd.
Understood to have been written about Syd Barrett, their former band member, it’s both a tribute, and a call for him to ‘shine on’ despite suffering serious mental health issues.
In this edition of Soul Music, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd recalls the legendary day that Syd Barrett unexpectedly appeared in the studio where they were recording Wish You Were Here, the album bookended by Shine On. Nobody recognised Syd at first; once handsome and slender, he'd gained weight and shaved his head and eyebrows.
Another contributor to the programme, Anna Gascoigne, talks about the pain of losing her son, Jay. He was a gentle boy, a talented musician, who eventually succumbed to the multiple mental health problems he had battled for years. Shine On You Crazy Diamond, for Anna, speaks directly to her of Jay; he loved Pink Floyd and Shine On was played at his memorial service. Anna, herself, was driven to the brink of suicide by her son’s death. It was the support of her family – including her brother, Paul Gascoigne - that helped her to carry on.
Ed Steelefox, a DJ based in Worcester, describes a New Year’s Eve house-party of a few years ago: as the guests gradually fell asleep he chose to slip out the door leaving a non-stop playlist of different, live, versions of Shine On You Crazy Diamond to penetrate their dreams.
And Professor Allan Moore, a regular Soul Music contributor, takes to the grand piano to play and talk about what it is in the track that is so directly reminiscent of Syd Barrett.

SOUL MUSIC: SERIES 27 - 1. RIVER (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 19th December 2018
A new series of Soul Music begins with stories of Joni Mitchell's 'River', from her iconic 1971 album Blue. A song about the breakdown of a relationship and of a longing to be elsewhere that has become a melancholy Christmas anthem.
It's coming on Christmas / They're cutting down trees / They're putting up reindeer / And singing songs of joy and peace / Oh I wish I had a river / I could skate away on....
Emotional true stories of what the song means to different people, including comedian Chris Forbes, who lost his father on Christmas Day; Isobel, who fell sick far from home and understands the longing to be elsewhere captured in the song; Laura, who heard the song while pregnant at Christmastime; writer Rob Crossan, who will forever associate the song with his first love; Canadian poet Lorna Crozier who describes the frozen rivers of her and Joni's Saskatchewan childhood; and from Joni Mitchell's biographer David Yaffe.
Includes a rare live recording of 'River' from a BBC Concert in 1970, hosted by John Peel. The other versions of the song are by (in order of appearance) Joni Mitchell (Blue, 1971), Scott Matthews (Live Session for BBC 6 Music, 2011), Béla Fleck and the Flecktones (Jingle All the Way, 2008) and the Belgian indie choir Scala & Kolacny Brothers (Live Session for BBC 6 Music, 2011).

How To Burn A Million Quid
HOW TO BURN A MILLION QUID (320kbs-m4a/368mb/2hrs39mins)
BBC Radio 4 podcast: 15th to 21st January 2019
Outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island, with only one journalist and their roadie-come-fixer, Gimpo, in attendance. Why? Why would they do that?
How To Burn a Million Quid lays the story bare. A comic, surreal and fast moving adventure that sees Bill and Jimmy rise to the very top of the music industry, becoming the biggest selling music act in the UK before crashing out of the industry in spectacular fashion and heading toward the art world with the intention of creating similar mayhem. Inspired by a madcap theatrical genius and a cult novel, they blaze a trail that takes them to Sweden, the North Pole and the Sierra Nevada, via Northampton, before arriving finally on the Isle of Jura, with two suitcases containing a million quid.
It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did.
A sonic roller coaster featuring Paul Higgins (The Thick of It, Line of Duty) as Bill Drummond, Nicholas Burns (Nathan Barley, The World's End) as Jimmy Cauty, with Kevin Eldon as Gimpo, Jeremy Stockwell as Ken Campbell and an outstanding cast of multi-voice comedy performers.
Bill Drummond: Paul Higgins
Jimmy Cauty: Nicholas Burns
Gimpo: Kevin Eldon
Ken Campbell: Jeremy Stockwell
Everyone else: Kate O’Sullivan, Polly Kemp, Ronnie Jhuttie and Niall Ashdown
Original music by Somerset & Lewin
Original music by MZYLKYPOP (Mick Somerset, David Lewin, Simon Lewinski, Rachel E, Flip Clegg and Thom Foote)
Sound Design by Carl Scheleeshti Johnson
Produced and Directed by Boz Temple-Morris
Written by Sean Grundy and Cara Jennings
A HOLY MOUNTAIN production for BBC Radio 4.
HOW TO BURN A MILLION QUID - 1. PREVIEW (320kbs-m4a/6mb/3mins)
BBC Radio 4 podcast: 15th January 2019
HOW TO BURN A MILLION QUID - 2. RULE 1 (320kbs-m4a/62mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 4 podcast: 16th January 2019
Rule 1. Begin an inner alchemy to transcend the consensual reality tunnel and move from a state of fixation to a condition of mutability.
HOW TO BURN A MILLION QUID - 3. RULE 2 (320kbs-m4a/55mb/24mins)
BBC Radio 4 podcast: 17th January 2019
Rule 2: Don’t do anything unless it’s heroic.
Bill, Jimmy and Gimpo set off for Sweden in order to persuade Abba to let them sample their music. They’ll be OK with that. Won’t they? Just in case they say no, they’re taking all the records with them so that they can burn the vinyl before the legal deadline. Just in case.
Besides, Bill has another plan for how to get onto Top of the Pops.
HOW TO BURN A MILLION QUID - 4. RULE 3 (320kbs-m4a/67mb/29mins)
BBC Radio 4 podcast: 18th January 2019
Rule 3: Only a madman is absolutely sure.
Pop stardom is going well, the KLF are a music industry sensation with a string of hits. An inspired collaboration with country music legend Tammy Wynette takes them to new heights. But is that enough, asks Bill, where’s the meaning? In the North Pole perhaps? Well that’s the conclusion he reaches and so off they go. Really. All this happened.
HOW TO BURN A MILLION QUID - 5. RULE 4 (320kbs-m4a/49mb/21mins)
BBC Radio 4 podcast: 19th January 2019
Rule 4: Go it alone.
At the height of their success the KLF can do no wrong. But they really want to. News of their forthcoming BRIT Award confirms their status as music industry establishment – exactly the thing they’re fighting against – and so they go in search of an idea so outrageous, so disgusting, that they would succeed in becoming outcast from the industry. At the BRIT Awards ceremony of 1992 they try out their idea…
HOW TO BURN A MILLION QUID - 6. RULE 5 (320kbs-m4a/57mb/25mins)
BBC Radio 4 podcast: 20th January 2019
Rule 5: Know when to walk away.
With the last gasp from the now dead sheep, the KLF leave the music industry. They now take their fight against the Illuminati to the art world, and the Turner Prize of 1994. They are about to have the most brilliant idea of all. Or the most stupid. You decide.
HOW TO BURN A MILLION QUID - 7. RULE 6 (320kbs-m4a/73mb/32mins)
BBC Radio 4 podcast: 21st January 2019
Rule 6: Never ask for anyone’s blessing.
Finally, having landed on the Isle of Jura, Bill, Jimmy, Gimpo, and one chosen witness check into the Jura hotel carrying two suitcases containing a million quid. They must pass the night before committing the act for which they have come. Burning one million pounds. Can they really go through with it?

Desert Island Discs: Jeremy Deller
DESERT ISLAND DISCS: JEREMY DELLER (320kbs-m4a/99mb/43mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 6th January 2019
The Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller is perhaps best known for We’re Here Because We’re Here, a moving and powerful memorial to the Battle of the Somme, and The Battle of Orgreave – a re-enactment of the confrontation between police and pickets at the height of the miners’ strike.
Deller doesn’t paint, draw or sculpt and his work encompasses film, photography and installations. At school his creative endeavours were not always appreciated, and at 13 he was asked to leave the art class.
His lifelong love of history was ignited by childhood trips to museums with his father, and is evident in the subjects he addresses, from Stonehenge, which he re-created as a giant bouncy castle, to William Morris. He managed to meet Andy Warhol in London in 1986 and went to spend two formative weeks at Warhol’s New York City studio, the Factory. The experience crystallised in Deller the belief that art can come in many forms and that an artist can create their own world of ideas.
His memorial to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre will be unveiled in August 2019.
BOOK CHOICE: An A to Z London Street Atlas
LUXURY: A stretch of road over Hay Bluff between Hay-on-Wye and Abergavenny.
CASTAWAY'S FAVOURITE: Out of the Blue by Roxy Music.
Presenter: Lauren Laverne
Producer: Paula McGinley

HELENA HAUFF - LATE JUNCTION MIXTAPE 03.01.19 (320kbs-m4a/63mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 3rd January 2019
Max Reinhardt presents a pulsing, genre-splicing mixtape from Hamburg techno legend, the musician and DJ Helena Hauff.
An expert in the art of the mix, Helena became obsessed with DJing in her teens after a particularly life-changing night at a techno club, and soon became a resident at Hamburg’s notorious basement bar the Golden Pudel. Alongside her mixing, she began to make live tracks with vintage synths and drum machines.
It was there that she met Darren Cunningham aka Actress, and through him released her first EP on Ninja Tune in 2013. Two years later, she released her debut full-length album, Discreet Desires, named one of Rolling Stones magazine’s top 20 electronic albums of that year. Her latest release Qualm was unapologetically raw, described by her as the product of “trying to create something powerful without using too many instruments and layers”.
Over the past five years, she’s become one of the most sought after and respected selectors, touring the world with expertly curated DJ sets spanning acid, electro, EBM, techno and post punk and headlining festivals like Sonar and Dekmantel.
Helena’s mixtape reflects her love of crate digging, from ‘70s library music and Yusef Lateef to psychedelic stoner rock and Meredith Monk, and of course a good dose of techno and leftfield electro.
Produced by Katie Callin for Reduced Listening.

A Hundred Years Of Mervyn Peake
A HUNDRED YEARS OF MERVYN PEAKE (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 27th November 2018
"The intense love for my parents, with its resultant anguish, lives on for me". Sebastian Peake, eldest son of Mervyn Peake, the remarkable author and artist, takes a return trip to the Island of Sark where he spent his childhood.
Peake, whose centenary is being celebrated this week, is best known for his 'Titus Groan' series of novels, and to a lesser degree his art and illustrations; but he was also a passionate husband, married to artist Maeve Gilmore, and family man. Never too busy to indulge his children, he enriched their lives with his fantastical imagination as much as those who read his novels or relished his art.
Here, Sebastian revisits the family home in the Channel Islands, walks the traffic free byways, recalling his remarkable father; the day he sketched 50 of the islanders at the annual fair; the acts of derring-do, climbing down to dangerous coves to gather semi-precious stones for Maeve; his time as one of the Sark Group of painters; and finally the days spent writing his most famous novel, 'Gormenghast'.
With his brother Fabian, he pours over diaries, paintings and sketches to talk about their father's artistic legacy, from the best loved "Treasure Island" illustrations to poignant sketches of the last inhabitants of Belsen. With his sister Clare, he mourns his fathers struggles in later life, the onset of Parkinson's and the difficult final years for the family, and their mother in particular.
This is the life of Mervyn Peake, from his youth as an artist, to his untimely death in 1957, having become one of the most truly imaginative and haunting writers in the world, talking to those who knew him best.
Producer: Sara Jane Hall.
