BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 10th December 2017
Matt talks to Beck Hansen about the first key musical moments in his career to date.
He is one of the most versatile and inquisitive musical minds to emerge from the US underground.
He grew up listening to classic rock, punk and hip hop in Los Angeles and busking around the underground anti-folk scene in New York. This journey led to him creating albums that have encompassed blues, slacker rock, lush Americana, Prince-style soul funk, psychedelia and pop.
In the 90s when he first found fame he was regarded as a postmodern pop star for his skill in playfully blending the past and present, but now nearly 25 years later it's obvious he was just a great songwriter looking to see what styles worked best for his music.
Beck - Tropicalia [Columbia]
Beck - The New Pollution [DGC]

Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy: The Primary Phase
DOUGLAS ADAMS - THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY: THE PRIMARY PHASE (320kbs-m4a/404mb/2hrs55mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 16th to 21st April 2018
An epic adventure in time and space including some helpful advice on how to see the Universe for less than 30 Altairian dollars a day.
Arthur Dent is one of only two survivors from Earth, demolished to make way for a by-pass. He survived thanks to his friend, Ford Prefect (who hails not from Guildford, but somewhere near Betelgeuse), a writer for the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, "the most successful book ever to have come out of the great publishing corporations of Ursa Minor". They've managed to escape from Restaurant at the End of Universe on the Black Ship only to find themselves where they never thought they'd be, only 2 million years earlier. What on earth are they going to do when face to face with 'how, why and where phases' of galactic development?
The global multi-media success story that is "Hitchhiker's" started life as a Radio 4 series in March 1978. The original scripts by the late Douglas Adams then went on to spawn a series of novels, a feature film, at least three stage shows, a TV series, a computer game, a collection of comic books - and various towels.
The Guide helpfully informs us that the most obscene expletive in the Galaxy is "Belgium".
Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge and died in 2001 at the age of 49. He suffered a fatal heart attack after working out at his gym in California.
The answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything is 42.
Starring Peter Jones as The Book, Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, Geoffrey McGivern as Ford Prefect, Bill Wallis as The Vogon Captain, Jo Kendall as Lady Cynthia and David Gooderson as the Barman. Produced by the late Geoffrey Perkins.
Radiophonic sound and music by Paddy Kingsland.

ALEKS IN WONDERLAND: THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET - INTERNET OF THINGS (96kbs-m4a/19mb/26mins)
BBC World Service broadcast: 18th September 2017
Can we Control the Dark Side of the Internet?
The Internet is the world's most widely used communications tool. It’s a fast and efficient way of delivering information. However it is also quite dumb, neutral, treating equally all the data it passes around the world. From data that forms scientific research papers, the wealth of social media to keep us all connected with friends and relatives, entertainment or material we would rather not see- from political propaganda to horrific violence, the Internet makes no distinction.
Is it time to change that? And can we?
In this programme Aleks Krotoski looks at whether it’s possible to use technological fixes to regulate the internet or whether a more political approach is needed to governance of this vital but flawed communications medium.

ALEKS IN WONDERLAND: THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET - DARK SIDE OF THE WORLD WIDE WEB (96kbs-m4a/19mb/26mins)
BBC World Service broadcast: 11th September 2017
With the coming of the World Wide Web in the 1990s internet access opened up to everybody, it was no longer the preserve of academics and computer hobbyists. Already prior to the Web, the burgeoning internet user groups and chat rooms had tested what was acceptable behaviour online, but access was still limited.
Aleks Krotoski asks whether the Web through enabling much wider use of the internet is the villain of the piece in facilitating not just entertainment and commerce, but all aspects of the darker side, from malicious computer hacking attacks, worms and viruses, to new channels for criminality, online extortion and identity theft.

Aleks In Wonderland: The History Of The Internet - The Origin Of The Internet
ALEKS IN WONDERLAND: THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET - THE ORIGIN OF THE INTERNET (96kbs-m4a/19mb/26mins)
BBC World Service broadcast: 4th September 2017
Just how did the Internet become the most powerful communications medium on the planet, and why does it seem to be an uncontrollable medium for good and bad? With no cross border regulation the internet can act as an incredible force for connecting people and supporting human rights and yet at the same time convey the most offensive material imaginable. It has become the most useful research tool on earth but also the most effective way of delivering threats to the security of governments, the health service and on a personal level our own identities.
In this series Aleks Krotoski unravels the complexity of the internet, meeting the people who really invented it, looking behind the myths and cultural constructs to explain what it actually is and how it came to exist outside of conventional regulation. We’ll ask whether the nature of the net itself really is cause for concern - and if so what can be done to reign in the negatives of the internet without restricting the positives?
In this first episode we go back to the days before the internet to look at the cultural and technological landscape from which it grew, and unravel some of the key moments - now lost in time and obscured by technology folklore, which mark when the internet lost its innocence.

Desert Island Discs: Paul Weller
DESERT ISLAND DISCS: PAUL WELLER (128kbs-m4a/40mb/43mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 21st December 2007
Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the musician Paul Weller. As the lead singer of The Jam, the founder of The Style Council and a hugely successful solo artist, he is one of the most revered music writers and performers of the past 30 years and is cited as an influence by countless other singers.
In a rare interview, he describes the chronic shyness he had to overcome; how he is still gripped by fear before each performance and how, after he had been dumped by his record label, he was unable to write songs and found that even picking up a guitar felt alien to him. His father has been a constant support to him - as his mentor as well as his manager - and has always believed that his son had something special.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: CLASSIC DESERT ISLAND DISCS - ANNIE LENNOX (320kbs-m4a/82mb/36mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 22nd April 2018
Kirsty Young's castaway this week is one of our most successful singer-songwriters, Annie Lennox. Her extraordinary voice has captivated us for more than a quarter of a century and, as one half of the group Eurythmics and as a solo artist, she's sold tens of millions of records and won fistfuls of awards. As a teenager, her musical ability was her passport out of her home town of Aberdeen. At that point, a career as a flautist beckoned: but, after studying in London, she felt she could never make her mark as a classical musician. It was a chance encounter with aspiring pop-star Dave Stewart that set her on an entirely different path.
For much of the 1980s, all her creative energy went into making music. But when her children were born, she says, her priorities shifted. Now she devotes much of her time and energy to supporting different humanitarian causes. She says: "I need to find meaning in my life to make me happy; and that's been an ongoing struggle."

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: CLASSIC DESERT ISLAND DISCS - HUGH MASEKELA (320kbs-m4a/78mb/34mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 1st April 2018
Another chance to listen to the world famous musician speaking to Sue Lawley in 2004. As a boy growing up in the impoverished townships of South Africa, he was inspired to learn the trumpet after seeing Kirk Douglas play Bix Beiderbecke in Young Man With A Horn. He begged one of his teachers - the anti-apartheid crusader Father Trevor Huddleston - to buy him a horn and in return he promised to stay out of trouble.
Hugh soon made a name for himself in South Africa but as the racial tensions intensified during the 50s he decided he had to leave his homeland to get a better music education in America. There he quickly made a name for himself with his fusion of African jazz music and became a 'flower child' playing with some of the great bands of the decade: Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and the Byrds. He's still probably best known for his number-one track, Grazing in the Grass, which sold four million copies worldwide in 1968. He returned to Africa in 1973, spending the next 17 years working on a range of musical collaborations in Botswana, Liberia, Nigeria, Congo and Guinea. Then, after thirty years in self-imposed exile, he returned to his homeland in 1990.

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 13th March 2018
Thurston Moore shares his musical milestones with Matt Everitt in a programme first broadcast in 2017.
He is undoubtedly one of the most influential guitarists in alternative music. Along with his band Sonic Youth, he pioneered the noise rock sound, taking the hardcore punk ethos and DIY ethic and creating a new sound and musical style. He is renowned for his unconventional approach to the guitar, using unorthodox tunings and unusual tools to prepare his instruments. The band developed a cult status over a thirty year career, and many of their albums are regarded as classics. Since their split in 2011, Thurston has continued to write and record.
He discusses his earliest musical passions, the first record he owned and his first guitar. He also recalls the first Sonic Youth gig and key influences John Coltrane and Patti Smith. He talks about end of Sonic Youth and their 'hiatus' and his status as an avant garde master of the guitar.

The Reunion - The Young Ones
THE REUNION - THE YOUNG ONES (320kbs-m4a/96mb/42mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 29th April 2018
Sue MacGregor reunites five people who made their names in the ground-breaking TV comedy The Young Ones.
In the early 1980s, the most popular TV comedies were cosy sitcoms like To The Manor Born and Last of the Summer Wine. Live stand-up comedy was largely confined to working men's clubs and seaside resorts. Mother-in-law and Irish gags were still a staple.
But, in the backroom of a Soho strip club, an underground venue called The Comic Strip emerged. The non-sexist, anti-racist but violent and bolshy acts drew a fashionable crowd. Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman were among the stars in the audience.
TV producers drew from the performers they saw there for the casting of The Young Ones. The bunch of loud-mouthed scruff bags thrown together as housemates in grotty, tumbledown digs, really broke the mould.
When The Young Ones was first aired in November 1982, ratings were pitiful. But before long, the show, with its wild slapstick and surreal twists, soon won a dedicated following. Within six months, a second series was on TV and the team had a BAFTA award for their mantelpiece.
Like the British classic Fawlty Towers, the team decided that The Young Ones should only run for 12 episodes. By then, everyone involved had made their name and alternative comedy became the TV phenomenon of the decade.
Sue MacGregor is joined by original Young One Nigel Planer who played depressed musician Neil; Chris Ryan who played Mike "The Cool Person"; Alexei Sayle who played members of the Balowski family; Lise Mayer who co-wrote the series with Ben Elton and her then partner actor Rik Mayall; and Stephen Frost who played a number of roles across both series.

THE REUNION - BOYS FROM THE BLACKSTUFF (128kbs-m4a/38mb/41mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 28th July 2014
In this edition of The Reunion, Sue MacGregor reunites Julie Walters, Alan Bleasdale, Tom Georgeson, Michael Angelis and producer Michael Wearing to talk about their roles in the landmark 1980s drama series Boys from the Blackstuff.
Writer Alan Bleasdale's hard-hitting drama series was set against the harsh backdrop of struggle and bleak unemployment in the Liverpool of Thatcher's Britain. It chronicled the lives of a group of men as they sought to find work, whilst suffering the despair and indignity of life on the scrapheap. First transmitted in October 1982, it received widespread critical acclaim and became a 'television event'.
Boys from the Blackstuff had an immediate and startling impact, thanks to the sheer heartfelt emotional power of Bleasdale's uncompromising writing and an extraordinarily gifted ensemble cast. It painted an uncomfortable, but warranted portrait of a city and a country teetering precariously on the brink of social and economic disaster, where the only real victims were those who were prevented by circumstances from leading fulfilling and productive lives.
The original team join Sue MacGregor to talk about their experiences of the making of the series and its widespread resonance across the nation.

To complement the 6 Music Festival, taking place this year in Glasgow, we repeat highlights of a series in which musician Davie Scott reveals the stories behind classic Scottish albums.
In this episode, first broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland in 2010, Davie looks back at Psychocandy, the debut album by the Jesus and Mary Chain, released in 1985. With the help Janice Long, Bobby Gillespie and the famously-elusive Reid brothers themselves, Davie comes to the conclusion that teen angst never sounded so good... well certainly not from East Kilbride.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: DAVID BYRNE (320kbs-m4a/97mb/42mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 23rd March 2018
David Byrne was a founding member of the band Talking Heads. Born in Dumbarton, Scotland, he emigrated first to Canada and then to the USA before the age of ten.
He started playing in bands at school and, when art school didn't work out for him, he founded Talking Heads with a couple of friends. They played their first gig, opening for the Ramones, at the legendary New York club CBGB's, in June 1975. Eight studio albums later, cracks were beginning to show in the relations between band members, and by 1991 Talking Heads had officially split up.
Since then, he has enjoyed a solo career, and also made films, published photographic books, composed scores for musicals, created art installations and written books. He has received an Academy Award for Best Original Music Score, as well as a Golden Globe and a Grammy, for his soundtrack to the 1987 film The Last Emperor.
He and his fellow Talking Heads members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. He lives in New York and has a daughter in her late twenties from his 17 year marriage to Adelle Lutz.
