THE FIRST TIME WITH... SERIES 11 - 3. RÓISÍN MURPHY (320kbs-m4a/131mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 21st February 2018
Roisin Murphy shares her musical milestones with Matt Everitt in a programme first broadcast in 2016.
Roisin tells of her upbringing in a small town in Ireland amongst a very musical family that knew how to party. When she was 12 she moved to Manchester and she talks of how this opened her eyes. From there she moved to Sheffield and this is where she really started to find her own identity and crowd, mainly through her love of alternative music. She realised she didn't have to be part of the mainstream and try to fit in, instead she could, in her words, 'fit out'. In Sheffield she met DJ Parrot who has remained a key influence and producer in her musical career. This was when she discovered dance music, which became central to her musical career.
She recalls how her old band Moloko fell into place one step at a time, and how that pretty much encapsulates the band's career. She goes on to talk about meeting Matthew Herbert who produced her first solo album, and what an enormous help he was to her at that time.
