Adrian Sherwood - RA.1001 Mix

ADRIAN SHERWOOD - RA.1001 MIX (320kbs/174mb/1hr16mins)

Resident Advisor podcast: 24th August 2025

"Adrian Sherwood has spent nearly half a century reshaping how dub is heard, felt and understood. From his teenage years absorbing reggae and funk at the Newlands Club in High Wycombe, to cofounding his revered On-U Sound label in 1979, he's been a restless force in British sound system culture. His debut production, Dub From Creation, was striking for what it wasn't—instead, it signalled his instinct to twist the Jamaican genre into new, experimental forms.

"That invention defined On-U Sound. The outlet epitomised the creative collision of reggae and sound system music with post-punk, industrial, synth pop and beyond, forging a catalogue that still sounds singular today. In the process, he became a vital bridge: producing for the likes of Prince Far I, Bim Sherman and Lee "Scratch" Perry while also working with Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and Sinead O'Connor. For some, it was radical-"What on earth are you doing to reggae?" David Rodigan once asked after listening to African Head Charge—but for Sherwood, nostalgia was the real death knell. His mantra was simple: don't follow, make your own sound.

"That ethos runs straight through The Collapse Of Everything, his first solo album in 13 years. It's a heavy, hallucinatory record that draws on desert blues riffs, dread bass pressure and noirish textures from collaborators like Doug Wimbish, Keith LeBlanc and Brian Eno. The result feels contemporary yet unmistakably Sherwood, responding to "contemporary fuckries and impending madnesses" with both spiritual weight and flashes of psychedelic uplift.

"His RA Mix (yes, you read that right) arrives at a moment of renewal—RA.1001 is the first in a new era for the series. (After 1,000 editions of the RA Podcast, we're updating the name to better reflect what it's become.) Recorded at his Ramsgate studio, the 76-minute mix folds in cuts from The Collapse Of Everything alongside material from across the On-U Sound universe, plus collaborations with Panda Bear, Sonic Boom, Coldcut and Spoon. It's Sherwood doing what he's always done: stretching dub into endless new shapes.

MAX COOPER - BLEEP MIX #162 (258kbs-m4a/125mb/68mins)

Bleep podcast: 8th February 2021

Mesh; the name brings to mind an underlying foundation, a wire frame for a crafted piece of art to ensure structural integrity. It's an apt name for multimedia artist Max Cooper's electronic imprint, where the MO is clattering rhythms and voluminous ambient vistas; sound as a vehicle for big ideas. Cooper's exclusive Bleep mix celebrates the achievements of Mesh with a collection of works from their discography, featuring the ambient swells of Rob Clouth and some especially crisp breakbeat re-alignments from the likes of Reid Willis and Synkro. To top it off, there's a couple of unreleased Cooper numbers you won't hear anywhere else.

"Hi Bleep and listeners, many thanks for getting me involved on your awesome mix series. I've been really excited about the music we've been releasing on Mesh recently, so I decided to combine a lot of Mesh content with Laurel Halo's beautiful new remix of the Glassforms EP with Bruce Brubaker on Infine, and a couple of unreleased bits fresh from the studio which I've been playing around with in recent weeks and which probably won't be heard in their Bleep mix form anywhere else as they're still actively evolving pieces. It's a wander through some of the music which I've been using for escapism in recent times, rich with narrative and imagery if you can spare me some time with headphones on and eyes closed." - Max Cooper

Plaid - Bleep Mix #50

PLAID - BLEEP MIX #50 (256kbs-m4a/111mb/61mins)

Bleep podcast: 2019

For the 50th entry in our mix series, we are super hyped to present this hour long electronic adventure from Plaid. Since the early 90's, Plaid has consistently released a stream of mind expanding LPs for Warp, yet for their Bleep mix they offer us a very rare opportunity to experience the sounds that inspire, influence and rotate inside their studio station. From the up to the minute breakbeat techno of Skee Mask, to the euphoric glow of Jon Hopkins and into the outer reaching wormholes of Richard Devine's most outer reaching submissions, Plaid cross all genres with a strong knowledgeable style, one that has arguably made them such a historically important artist within both the UK and worldwide electronica scenes.

Shackleton - Bleep Mix #152

SHACKLETON - BLEEP MIX #152 (256kbs-m4a/116mb/63mins)

Bleep podcast: 10th December 2020

The enigmatic genius Shackleton's contribution to Bleep's mix series is completely and utterly captivating. In his first mix in almost a decade, the music blends tracks from 2019's Reach The Endless Sea and 2020's Like The Stars Forever And Ever, the two LPs Shackleton has made as part of the group Tunes Of Negation. These numbers are spliced together with live versions, improvisatory passages and droning interludes which were fashioned by Shackleton resampling pre-existing tracks. Those who know Shackleton from his dubstep days will find that his sound has changed considerably since then - his intoxicating style now nods more to Jon Hassell's fourth world explorations, Indian classical music, the rhythmic phasing of Steve Reich and post-minimalist artists like Midori Takada. This earthy, psychedelic hour serves as a fascinating chronicle of how Shackleton's artistic voice has developed down the years.

"The mix is made up of tracks from the two "Tunes Of Negation" albums, some live versions, and some studio improvisations. I made some bridges between the tracks with drones and the like that I created out of parts from existing tunes that I resampled and generally messed around with." - Shackleton

Bleep podcast: 13th August 2025

The versatility of On-U Sound shines in this generous mix from the label crew, "90 minutes of deep cuts, lost classics and non-label Sherwood productions, recorded using two turntables and a stack of original vinyl." Sitting in between are the psychedelic jazz dub fusions of Playgroup with slick dextrous bassline and ricocheting drums, the reggae inflected synth funk of Shara Nelson, and Little Annie's sensual spoken word drowning in idiosyncratic desire.

GREGG OPPENHEIMER - LUCY LOVES DESI: A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE SITCOM (OMNIBUS) (320kbs-m4a/158mb/69mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 3rd August 2025

The onscreen pairing of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz is brilliant, but the American TV network is doubtful.

"Who'd believe she was married to him?"
Lucille: 'But I am married to him!'

Martin Jarvis directs a stellar cast in Gregg Oppenheimer's inside look at his writer-producer father's famous TV series, I Love Lucy.

Anne Heche channels Lucille Ball in an outstanding performance. Co-starring Wilmer Valderrama, Jared Harris, Alfred Molina, Stacy Keach and Mike McShane.

The serial dramatises more than just the creation of an iconic TV series.

It charts the need to challenge existing ideas that balked at diversity, the comic dynamic of the Arnaz's partnership, and their commitment and integrity shared by writer Jess Oppenheimer - resisting network and sponsor demands and outdated censorship rules, bringing creative bonuses to US audiences and worldwide.

This roller-coasting five-part serial shows how TV, at a crucial time, learned from the established craft of radio.

Cuban bandleader Desi's inventive genius engendered studio techniques now taken for granted. Lucille and Desi's uplifting relationship flouted conventional thinking and defied accepted entertainment practice in one of the most influential sitcoms in TV history.

Omnibus of five parts.

Dance Til You Bleed: The World According To Hans Christian Andersen (Omnibus)

DANCE TIL YOU BLEED: THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (OMNIBUS) (320kbs-m4a/163mb/1hr11mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 10th August 2025

Omnibus of five fairy tales shining a light into the dark regions of the mind of author Hans Christian Andersen.

Starring Toby Jones.

Hans Christian Andersen jettisons the conventions of fairy tale logic, giving his characters realistic motivations for why they do what they do. He directly links the fantastical with the psychological. He subverts fairy tale logic whereby the good are beautiful and the bad, ugly. Without him, every fairy tale would end happily ever after and the true power of the genre might never have been realised.

As Andersen, Toby Jones is the guide, embarking on a journey through the author's imagination as he attempts to identify the source of his creativity, delving into the darker tales including the later stories that anticipate Surrealism and Freud.

Each of the dramas is introduced by bestselling author and fairy tale aficionado, Joanne Harris.

Adaptations by Lucy Catherine

The Split Up (And The Almost Inevitable Reunion)

THE SPLIT UP (AND THE ALMOST INEVITABLE REUNION) (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 30th July 2025

Made to mark the 40th anniversary of the Beatles disbanding, the Reverend Richard Coles (whose own band The Communards split up) examines how rock groups through the decades have decided to call it a day.

From the Beatles through to the Verve who've disbanded several times, Richard trawls the archives to find examples of rock split-ups and to ask whether there ever can be a dignified parting of the ways.

He examines the many reasons that bands split and reveals a myriad of circumstances underlying these, from artistic differences to personal animosity, the wish of one singer to go solo or simply the end of a particular zeitgeist which characterised the band.

He also asks whether the energy and drive which comes from the music and early days of a band means that tensions and a sundering is often inevitable.

Listen out for a wealth of archive material from bands through the decades, of all kinds of musical styles.

There are also new interviews with the record executive Tony Wadsworth and the artist manager Jazz Summers, which give the viewpoints of those working behind the scenes who have to manage and deal with the fallout when a band splits up. Extra comment is provided by the rock specialists Stuart Maconie and Laura Lee Davies.

But the story doesn't just stop when the bands split. The members may go off and pursue other careers, but often the creativity which fuelled them at the beginning still drives them 10 years down the line. In addition, touring is now where the big money is to be made.

So, for many different reasons, many of the bands we thought we'd never see again are being coaxed out of their separate career paths to reunite and go on the road once more. The Police regrouped, Take That have had a new lease of life and the Spice Girls took their children touring the second time around.

Of course, the reunion doesn't always go well. Perhaps the band is without the lead singer who gave such a distinctive sound. Sometimes the artistic differences which sundered the artists in the first place rear their heads again 10 years later.

Maybe the fans have grown up and moved on.

And that means that a reunited band can do the split-up all over again.

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 31st July 2025

Colin calls Frank omnipresent. Enchanted by his songs he says: "It's not about the notes you hit for me, it's about the simplicity and the honesty. And for me he had it in bucket loads"

New York author and music critic Will Friedwald vividly describes the singer's life history, from his early years to the marriages and through his recording and screen career.

Soul Music: Series 30 - 25. Into My Arms By Nick Cave

SOUL MUSIC: SERIES 30 - 25. INTO MY ARMS BY NICK CAVE (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 18th July 2025

"I don't believe in an interventionist God" has to be one of the most original opening lines to a song.

It's one that resonates with the people in this programme who take comfort from Nick Cave's love song.

Els from Belgium was introduced to Cave's music through her partner Guido and Into My Arms became their song. After Guido died in a road accident Els carried on going to concerts and took great comfort from hearing that song. When she later wrote to Nick Cave's blog The Red Hand Files to tell him her story about Into My Arms she was overwhelmed when Nick Cave responded.

The Reverend John Walker feels a strong connection to the song as it's one his musician son Jonny performed just for him one evening on a rainy street in Leeds City Centre as Jonny was about to pack up and leave his busking spot. That special father-son moment has become even more cherished since Jonny's untimely death in 2018.

Many different artists have recorded their versions of Into My Arms including the Norwegian singer Ane Brun who performed it as a way of dealing with the heartache of a lost relationship.

Producer: Maggie Ayre

Long distance runner Lee Perry takes himself on a marathon the morning after his mum dies, with Kate Bush in his headphones for all 26 miles of his run.

Musician and record producer Georgia Barnes talks through the making of her synth-pop cover of the song, from the opening drone to the iconic synth line.

The Doppler Effect With Charles Hazlewood

THE DOPPLER EFFECT WITH CHARLES HAZLEWOOD (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 17th July 2025

Conductor Charles Hazlewood and Dr Brian May of Queen celebrate the audio Doppler effect - with a brass and train!

The Doppler effect not only proved that the universe was expanding, it also helped John Lennon sound like the Dalai Lama on a mountaintop - or so he hoped.

Just what is the story behind the Doppler Effect and what does it have to do with music?

BBC Radio 4 turns the volume up to 11, as conductor Charles Hazlewood recreates an ambitious experiment which first proved the Doppler Effect in 1845, while Dr Brian May, guitarist with rock band Queen gives him the low-down on the Doppler Shift in astrophysics.

A steam train, a brass band and an internationally famous conductor recreate one of the most unusual experiments - to prove the existence of the Doppler Effect – what could possibly go wrong?

So what is the Doppler Effect? Everyone today is aware of it, even if they can't name it. The pitch of the siren on a passing police car appears to change as it zooms past - the note appearing to rise and fall as the source of the sound approaches and fades away.

Austrian physicist Christian Doppler, who first proposed his theory in 1842, was interested in the behaviour of light waves, but because sound waves are similar - if longer - the way the theory was tested was using a steam train loaded up with trumpet players holding a single note, travelling at speed past a station.

What a sight - and a sound - it must have been. And now you need imagine it no longer, as conductor Charles Hazlewood attempts to re-create this extraordinary experiment for BBC Radio 4.

With the help of the locomotive steam power of the Great Central Railway and the wind power of the Hathern Brass Band, Charles fills a railway carriage with brass players and sends them from Loughborough, through Quorn Station, blasting out a single note, to recreate that moment.

Gavin Pretor-Pinney, author of “The Wave Watcher’s Companion” helps Hazelwood get to grips with the physics and pit falls behind the original experiment.
Dr Brian May talks of his own close understanding of the Doppler Shift in his study of astrophysics, and how the theory helps us understand the universe.
And, from the Beatles to Booker T and the MG’s, composer and creator of musical instruments Sarah Angliss, demonstrates the beauty of the Leslie Speaker and Hammond Organ, which make the most of the phenomenon.

Music in the programme:

* The Smiths - How Soon Is Now
* Kraftwerk - Autobahn
* The Hathern Band - Death Or Glory
* Queen - White Queen
* Jimmy McGriff - Discotheque
* Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing
* The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows
