God, Pirates And Ovaltineys

GOD, PIRATES AND OVALTINEYS (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 23rd July 2025

Competition between commercial radio and the BBC goes way back before the ship-based pirates of the 1960s.

Between 1920 and the Second World War, Radio Normandy and other Europe-based commercial stations had vast audiences for the likes of Roy Plomley and Christopher Stone - as well as sponsored shows like 'The League of Ovaltineys'.

Sean Street tunes back over time to investigate commercial radio, the BBC and the intense cultural and technical battles between them.

With deep archive featuring pre-war commercials and programme excerpts.

Producer: Julian May

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2008.

Archive On 4: Wonderlands

ARCHIVE ON 4: WONDERLANDS (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 22nd June 2024

Long ago, in a land not far away, children's books were a neglected corner of the book world - marginalised, unimportant, an afterthought.

Today, one in every three books sold in the UK is a children's book. We're spending more money on children's books than ever before and an increasing number of adults turned to children's fiction for comfort reading in lockdown.

Writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce explores how and why books for children have become central to our reading culture.

It's a Cinderella story - a tale of humble beginnings, unexpected transformations and glittering success.

We have a rich and deep children's book culture, going back to the classics like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and The Railway Children - stories which still live with us, adapting and evolving for new generations.

Frank explores where they come from and how two World Wars and societal change in the 1960s shaped children's books, and our understanding of childhood itself. He explores the spectacular success of bestselling novels by JK Rowling and Phillip Pullman at the turn of the Millennium, which rocket-fuelled children's publishing.

Traditionally we've preferred to see children's books as historic and separate from the wider culture but in fact, says Frank, writing for children has always been deeply engaged with society.

From Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, through to Malorie Blackman's best-selling Noughts and Crosses series, these authors create mirrors for young readers to reflect on life's big questions.

As Philip Pullman says, "There are some subjects which are too large for adult fiction; they can only be dealt with adequately in a children's book."

Desert Island Discs: Noel Gallagher

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: NOEL GALLAGHER (320kbs-m4a/99mb/43mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 19th July 2015

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the musician, Noel Gallagher.

He was the principal songwriter of the band Oasis - his younger brother, Liam was the lead singer. Born to Irish parents, as a child he spent his summers visiting his mother's family in rural County Mayo, in sharp contrast to the Manchester council estate where they lived. He taught himself to play the guitar and loved music: he was road manager for the Inspiral Carpets before joining Liam in Oasis.

Their debut album in 1994 marked the beginning of the band's rise to fame as part of the Britpop movement. In 1996 they played in front of 250,000 fans over two consecutive nights at Knebworth and following the Labour landslide in 1997, Noel attended what became known as the Cool Britannia party held in Downing Street by Tony Blair. Oasis won six BRIT Awards and two Ivor Novello Awards before disbanding in August 2009.

He's since formed his own band - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.

Producer: Cathy Drysdale.

This Cultural Life - 127. Steve Reich

THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 127. STEVE REICH (320kbs-m4a/98mb/43mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 19th June 2025

Composer Steve Reich is one of the most influential musicians of modern times. In the 1960s he helped rewrite the rules of composition, using analogue tape machines to experiment with rhythm, repetition and syncopation. As the godfather of musical minimalism, his influence on Philip Glass, David Bowie, Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, and many other composers, has been enormous. Countless dance music producers also owe a debt to pieces including It's Gonna Rain, Drumming, Different Trains and Music for 18 Musicians. His music has been performed in concert halls all around the world, and his many awards include three Grammys, a Pulitzer Prize, the Polar Prize for Music and the Premium Imperiale.

Steve Reich tells John Wilson how, at the age of 14, three very different recordings awoke his interest in music: Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, Bach's 5th Brandenburg Concerto, and a piece of bebop jazz featuring saxophonist Charlie Parker, trumpeter Miles Davis and drummer Kenny Clarke. Inspired to start a jazz quintet of his own, Reich began to study percussion before enrolling in a music history course at Cornell University. It was here he discovered the music of Pérotin, the 12th century French composer associated with the Notre Dame school of polyphony in Paris. His beautiful sustained harmonies had a profound influence on Reich's own compositions, including Four Organs (1970) and Music for 18 Musicians (1976). Steve Reich also explains the significance of two books on his music; Studies in African Music by A.M. Jones and Music in Bali by Colin McPhee, both of which led to a greater understanding of music from parts of the world where music is passed down aurally rather than through notation.

Producer: Edwina Pitman

Great Lives - Marty Feldman

GREAT LIVES - ANNIE NIGHTINGALE CBE ON MARTY FELDMAN (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 26th June 2025

BBC Radio 1's legendary DJ Annie Nightingale CBE argues for the genius of the manic, bulbous-eyed comic and writer Marty Feldman.

Annie explains to Francine Stock how Marty's special brand of anarchic humour has been somewhat overlooked in comedy history as one of the greats.

Finding fame on UK radio and TV in the early 1970s, he eventually landed film roles in Hollywood.

Marty Feldman's friend, colleague and associate - Barry Cryer OBE is the expert witness.

Producer John Byrne

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2006.

Great Lives - Richey Edwards Of The Manic Street Preachers

GREAT LIVES - KEVIN CUMMINS ON RICHEY EDWARDS OF THE MANIC STREET PREACHERS (320kbs-m4a/64mb/27mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 21st April 2025

Richey was, beautiful says Cummins, a natural icon and a gift to photograph. He also believes his writing has been overshadowed by the fact of his disappearance in 1995. "I think nobody has looked beyond that for quite a long time."

Manic Street Preachers biographer, Simon Price, also knew Richey Edwards and says he was "the most intelligent rock star I've ever met".

This programme covers alcoholism, anorexia, and self-harm, but it also celebrates Richey's sensitivity and, as Price says, the fact that he is one of those "icons of alienation" like Ian Curtis and Kurt Cobain who will always be there for people to discover the genius of his work".

Presented by Matthew Parris and produced for BBC Studios by Ellie Richold.

Great Lives - George Harrison

GREAT LIVES - MARK BILLINGHAM CHOOSES GEORGE HARRISON (320kbs-m4a/62mb/27mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 3rd February 2025

George Harrison was a musician, singer and songwriter who became one of the most famous people in the world as one quarter of the Beatles. That alone would merit a place in the Great Lives pantheon, but his work in the decades after the band broke up indicates a man of diverse and arguably underestimated talents.

Erupting onto the pop music scene in the 1960's, the Beatles' success was swift and dizzying; and for the rather private George, sometimes dubbed 'the quiet Beatle', this celebrity and adulation seems to have never quite sat comfortably. Nevertheless, he became a musical icon: responsible for a captivating collection of songs, from those he wrote with the Beatles through to his solo work; collaborating with a host of international artists; popularising Indian music and instruments; and even venturing into the movie-making business. At the same time, like many others thrust into the spotlight, George appears to have struggled with balancing success and the celebrity lifestyle with a more meaningful and spiritual existence.

This tension and how it drove George Harrison as an artist is part of what attracts crime writer, occasional musician and self-professed Beatles fanatic Mark Billingham to his story, and why he's nominated him today. Also in the studio to offer her insights is Dr Holly Tessler, a senior lecturer in music industries at the University of Liverpool, where she leads their MA programme: 'Beatles, Music Industry and Heritage'.

Presented by Matthew Parris and produced for BBC Studios Audio by Lucy Taylor.
