DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: POET CASTAWAYS - MICHAEL ROSEN (320kbs-m4a/98mb/42mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 20th October 2024
Author and children's poet Michael Rosen is castaway by Sue Lawley.
Since his first book, Mind Your Own Business, was published more than than 30 years ago, Michael has been credited with revolutionising the way children's poems are written and performed.
Words and language have always formed an important part of his life. The son of two teachers, he was born into a London, Jewish family, and brought up in a home full of literature, conversation and debate. His poems often rely on snatches of dialogue and memories from his own childhood and relate his experiences with his own children.
His greatest commercial success has been his hugely popular re-telling of the American folk tale We're All Going on a Bear Hunt.
He's also published a series of memories aimed at adults rather than children. In particular, these attend to the central tragedy of his life, the sudden death of his second son Eddie, when he was 18 years old. His death became a public matter because Eddie had featured so often in Michael's early work and was a well-known character to millions of children.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: POET CASTAWAYS - SIMON ARMITAGE (320kbs-m4a/98mb/42mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 6th October 2024
Appointed Poet Laureate in 2019 - Simon Armitage is castaway by Lauren Laverne.
His poems celebrate the everyday and the ordinary with wit and affection. But beyond the wood chip and washing lines he addresses the complexities and the profound feelings that underpin daily life.
Born in Huddersfield, Simon Armitage grew up in the village of Marsden in West Yorkshire. Marsden has informed and inspired much of his work and as a boy he would look out of his bedroom window at night to watch the comings and goings of village life.
He vividly remembers as a teenager discovering the work of fellow laureate Ted Hughes, recalling an almost electrical surge of excitement when he realised the power of words on a page. Hughes grew up in the next valley and Simon admits to thinking "If Ted Hughes can do it why can't I?"
He worked as a probation officer in Manchester for several years, writing poetry in the evenings and at weekends. His first collection Zoom! was published in 1989 and a few years later he left the probation service to write full time.
Prolific and popular, he was named the Millennium poet and in 2015 was appointed Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford. Three years later he was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry.
Today he lives not far from Marsden where, when he's not writing poems, plays and novels, he still looks out of his window and daydreams.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: CLASSIC DESERT ISLAND DISCS - DONALD SUTHERLAND (320kbs-m4a/78mb/34mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 1st September 2024
Sue Lawley talks to actor Donald Sutherland in a programme first broadcast in 2000. Donald Sutherland died in June 2024, aged 88. He has acted in 104 films, including such classics as MASH, Don't Look Now and JFK. Tall and lanky as a child, he was called 'Goofus' or 'Dumbo' because of his big ears. However, it was those ears that caught the attention of the director of The Dirty Dozen and thus his film career was launched.
Now appearing on the British stage for the first time in 36 years, he chooses eight records to take to the mythical desert island.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: AMERICAN SINGERS - ALICE COOPER (320kbs-m4a/99mb/43mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 8th August 2024
American rock musician Alice Cooper is castaway by Kirsty Young.
As a teenager he says it was British music that he tuned in to - listening to The Beatles, The Yardbirds and The Who.
He realised that while rock music had many heroes, there were few villains - that was the territory he marked out for himself. He developed his trademark look - blackened eyes, straggly hair and glamorous clothes - and set about designing live shows that were gleefully gory and macabre.
While critics have described him as 'the world's most beloved heavy metal entertainer', it took him a while to untangle himself from his creation.
"For a long time I honestly didn't know where I began and Alice ended. My friends at the time were Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and I was trying to keep up with them. And I realised when they all died that you didn't have to be your character off stage."

JOURNEYS IN SOUND - GRAHAM COXON (320kbs-m4a/138mb/60mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 7th October 2024
Musician and songwriter Graham Coxon of Blur and The Waeve shares the pivotal moments that have made him the multi-talented artist he is today. Talking to Nemone, who combines her roles of DJ and qualified psychotherapist, Graham dives deep to share his story and the songs that have moved him and sound-tracked the ups and downs of his eventful life. He also reveals how personal experiences and emotions are woven through his own work. It's a chance to understand his relationship with music more intimately, to learn more about how he has used sound to communicate, and how he has reached the place we meet him in.
The multi-instrumentalist began his musical adventure by playing saxophone on his schoolmate's first records. With that friend, Damon Albarn, he went on to form one of Britpop's biggest bands, Blur, with gargantuan success through the 90s and 00s. Graham has released eight solo LPs, TV film scores, been in The Jaded Hearts Club alongside Muse's Matt Bellamy and Miles Kane, and has created his own graphic novel and album 'Superstate'. Graham is now one half of The Waeve with Rose Elinor Dougal, his partner in life as well as music. The couple released their second album 'City Lights' last month.
Graham shares his memories of childhood, growing up on army estates and his early musical mentors. He also talks about living with anxiety, the circumstances that led him to rehab, his romantic and musical partnership with Rose, and the stories behind the tracks on their new album.
In this series Nemone will be talking in depth to Nadine Shah, Joan As Policewoman and Simon Raymonde formerly of Cocteau Twins and now head of well respected label Bella Union.

▶︎ •၊၊_၊_။_ TWO SHELL SET HORST 24 ၊၊_၊_။_။•◀︎ (320kbs/203mb/1hr28mins)
RA Podcast: 1st September 2024
90 mins of Two Shell, live from Horst.
We've been angling for an RA Podcast from Two Shell ever since they shifted from lowkey producers into hijinx hackers rummaging around the dance music mainframe.
Now that we've bagged a mix from clubland's premier iconoclasts, it still poses more questions than it answers: Was this pre-recorded? What's the deal with that AI voice guiding the set along? How can we be sure it was even them? Hang on: is "even them" even them?
What we can tell you is that the duo floored RA's stage at Horst Arts & Music 2024. Few genres were left untarnished as they veered off-piste on a thrill seeking mission toward breaking the 170+ BPM speed barrier. No tracklist, so ID crew over to you (Alex Gaudino makes an appearance, you can have that one as a freebie.) True to form, Two Shell always do it their own way.

In December 1982, The Police entered the studio to record their fifth album, 'Synchronicity'. Little did they know, it would be their last.
Taking its title from Carl Jung's theory of finding "meaning in coincidence", 'Synchronicity' found the band reunited after working on solo projects and acting careers. Stewart Copeland (drums), Andy Summers (guitar), and Gordon Sumner AKA Sting (bass and vocals) had only formed five short years before, and every album was bigger than the one before. The creative tensions at the core of the group - all incredible musicians with strong personalities - had often resulted in the best songs. But during 'Synchronicity', that internal conflict would all but destroy the band.
Creatively, they were at the top of their game, as Sting's compositions moved them further away from their Punk and Reggae roots, but as sessions progressed, so did the arguments. Two weeks in, an emergency meeting was called to see if the band could even carry on. They recorded their parts in separate rooms. Each designed their own section for the album cover so they didn't have to have a conversation about it.
Eventually, in June 1983, 'Synchronicity' was unleashed upon the world. It found Sting in a more introspective and sombre mood, uncertain of his place in the world. His songs of murder, paranoia, and his recent divorce occupied his headspace. The first track released was the sinister and seductive 'Every Breath You Take', which became one of the biggest songs in music history, and the most played song on the radio… ever. Typically, the band fought over its inclusion.
'Synchronicity' became The Police's biggest record, dethroning Michael Jackson's "Thriller" from the top spot in the U.S. and propelled the band to mega-stardom, now having sold 20 million copies worldwide. But just as their success had hit the summit, they found themselves with nowhere else to go, nothing left to achieve. Sting's mind was made up; the allure of a career without compromise was just too appealing. The Police were no more.
This is the story of an album made under a mountain of frustration, irritation, and compromise, an unrepeatable and remarkable feat that resulted in one of the finest albums ever produced.

JOURNEYS IN SOUND - SIMON RAYMONDE OF COCTEAU TWINS AND BELLA UNION LABEL BOSS (320kbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 9th October 2024
Simon Raymonde, Cocteau Twins bass guitarist and keyboard player, shares the pivotal moments that have made him the artist his is today and the songs that have sound-tracked the ups and downs of his life with 6 Music's Nemone.
Simon, the son of the late arranger and composer Ivor Raymonde, was a member of Scottish band Cocteau Twins from 1983 to 1997 with Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Fraser. In 1997, he set up independent record label Bella Union with Robin Guthrie. Since 2000, he has run the label on his own and continues to discover, produce and remix many bands, including Clearlake's Cedars, James Yorkston's Moving Up Country, the first two albums by John Grant's first band the Czars, and three albums by the Duke Spirit, including the hit album Cuts Across the Land.
Fleet Foxes' 2008 self-titled debut became Bella Union's first platinum-selling album in the UK. The label has subsequently released music by Father John Misty, Beach House, Mercury Rev, M. Ward, John Grant, The Low Anthem, Laura Veirs, The Flaming Lips, Lanterns on the Lake, Marissa Nadler and Jambinai, to name only a few. Simon also runs management company Bella Union Artist Management with his wife, Abbey.
Simon's memoir 'In One Ear: Cocteau Twins, Ivor Raymonde and Me' was released last month. In this hard-hitting programme, he talks to Nemone about his relationship with Dad Ivor, his childhood friends and the abuse he suffered at boarding school. He talks about the inner-workings of The Cocteau Twins and what led to the dissolution of the band. He also shares his song-writing process and why he set up Bella Union.
Featuring music from Dusty Springfield, The Sex Pistols, The Blue Nile, Scott Walker, Brian Eno and the extensive Cocteau Twins back catalogue. He also shares his 'Self Care' track.
