This Cultural Life - 91. Lily Allen

THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 91. LILY ALLEN (320kbs-m4a/98mb/43mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 23rd May 2024

Renowned for the autobiographical candour of her lyrics, Lily Allen has sung about the pitfalls of fame, drugs, broken relationships and motherhood. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for her debut album Alright Still and after the release of It's Not Me, It's You in 2010 won a Brit Award and three Ivor Novello Awards, including Songwriter of the Year. In 2021 she embarked on a stage acting career starring in 2.22 A Ghost Story, for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award. More recently, with her childhood friend Miquita Oliver, she launched her BBC podcast series Miss Me.

Talking to John Wilson, Lily recalls a sometimes sad and troubled childhood. Her father, the actor and comedian Keith Allen, had left the family home when she was four, and her film producer mother Alison Owen was often away working. She chooses as her first formative experiences a school concert in which she performed the song Baby Mine from the Disney movie Dumbo and captivated the audience. She recalls how the first started writing and recording her own songs, and built up a fanbase with the on-line platform MySpace. She chooses, as key musical influences the 1979 song Up The Junction by Squeeze, and the 2004 album A Grand Don't Come For Free by Mike Skinner, otherwise known as The Streets. Lily Allen also reflects on the pressures of juggling life in the spotlight with motherhood, and how theatre acting has offered her a new creative challenge.

Desert Island Discs: Greg Davies

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: GREG DAVIES (320kbs-m4a/133mb/58mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 12th May 2024

Greg Davies is a familiar face on television as the host of Taskmaster, the BAFTA-winning game show, and he has achieved sell out national arena tours as a stand-up. His on-screen breakthrough came in 2008 when he played the head of the sixth form, Mr Gilbert, in the highly successful teenage comedy series the Inbetweeners. He wrote and starred in the black comedy the Cleaner and co-wrote the sitcom Man Down in which he played a man in the grip of a midlife crisis.

Greg was born in St Asaph in North Wales and grew up in Shropshire. At school he gravitated towards what he calls the silly boys who created characters and devised comedy sketches in the playground. When he was 18 he discovered Eddie Murphy whose stand-up routines about his relatives spurred Greg to look to his own family as comedic source material.

Greg spent 13 years as an English and Drama teacher – a time he looks back on with mixed emotions and which he has mined for his stage act. When he was 33 he left teaching and started performing stand-up gigs and performed his first solo stand-up show at the Edinburgh Festival in 2010.

Greg lives in south London.

7” Of Joy: The Single At 75

7" OF JOY: THE SINGLE AT 75 (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 13th April 2024

What makes the 7" single so magical is its power to instantly gratify, its ability to get the job done and dusted in approximately two minutes and 57 seconds. Its power outstrips its modest size.

Born out of a commercial war between record labels - shellac was expensive and fragile - RCA Records released the first 7" record on 10th January 1949. Eight decades later 7" singles are in more demand than ever from avid collectors - some commanding four figure sums - and a whole new generation born when the iPod became king are discovering the beauty of the physical 7" over the digital file and streaming.

In this Archive on 4, Pete Waterman, who knows a thing or two about the 7" single, charts its history since the 1940s.

Along the way, he hears from a plethora of people for whom the single has played a huge part of their lives - Petula Clark and John Leyton of 'Johnny Remember Me' fame remember the early years as recording artists in the 1950s. There was the moral panic of the rock'n'roll and beat generation, as mothers in headscarves queued up decrying the degenerative influence of the coffee bar and its jukebox. But the force of the 7" single changed lives, and helped to introduce the world to the teenager.

Pete guides us through pop culture high points, and low points, when British artists dominated the US singles charts - events that injected a newfound confidence and self-belief into the domestic music industry.

Among those recalling their own relationship with the 7" single is composer Simon May (of EastEnders fame) who had a series of singles hits in the 70s. He explains the excitement of watching the unlikeliest success stories rise up the charts. Pete also talks to producer Royston Mayoh who made the 80s ITV music shows Razzmatazz and The Tube.

We hear about 7" singles parties when enthusiastic young fans would show off and swap their latest records. Pete talks about the sound of the vinyl single, we hear how they were made initially and from one of only two Jukebox factories that exist in the world where they are still making vinyl 7" singles

Pete looks at the phenomenon of the A and B side, the charity and novelty songs which were greatly enabled by the 7" market and the way covers changed everything in later years, and the bizarre and off-beat world of the "flexidisc" - the freebie giveaway often found on the cover of magazines.

Where does the single fit in history and where does it sit today? Pete Waterman, tries to answer the question in a way only he can.

JOURNEYS IN SOUND - PAUL WELLER: THE MUSICAL UPS AND DOWNS OF MY LIFE (320lbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 15th May 2024

Paul Weller shares the pivotal moments that have made him the multi-talented musician and composer he is today. Talking to Nemone who combines her roles of DJ and practising psychotherapist, Paul reveals how his relationship with music has grown over the six decades he's been releasing and the experiences that have had an impact on his work.

The prolific award-winning singer songwriter, affectionately known as 'The Modfather' by his fans, burst onto the music scene back in the late 70s fronting The Jam. A string of hits followed such as 'Eton Rifles', 'A Town Called Malice', 'Going Underground', 'That's Entertainment' and 'The Bitterest Pill'. This led to further musical adventures with The Style Council in the 80s and solo material under his own name from 1992 onwards. Nemone and Paul chat in his studio ahead of the release of new album '66'. They talk about life growing up with the Wellers in Woking, teenage musical influences, the impact of The Jam's success and band's subsequent split, working with his musical partner-in-crime Ocean Colour Scene's Steve Craddock, the joy of playing live, the process of writing songs and the making of the new album which will be released the day before his 66th birthday on the 24th of May. Paul also talks about how life has changed since giving up alcohol and how he tries to look after himself.

During this intimate conversation Paul picks music that has sound-tracked his life from The Beatles, Little Richard, The Four Tops, The Who, Sex Pistols, The Clash and Frankie Knuckles, and shares his love of artists such as Liam Bailey and Vegyn. He also chooses his ultimate 'Self Care' track, one that helps him relax and re-set.

THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 87. ANTONY GORMLEY (320kbs-m4a/98mb/42mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 27th April 2024

For over forty years, the sculptor Sir Antony Gormley has been using his own body as the basis for his artistic work, and is known for creating cast iron human figures that stand on high streets, rooftops and beaches, as well as in museums and galleries around the world. He won the Turner Prize in 1994 and the prestigious Premium Imperiale in 2013. Antony Gormley is best known for the Angel Of The North, a monumental winged figure on a hill in Gateshead which, overlooking the motorway and a mainline railway, is one of the most viewed pieces of modern art in the world.

He talks to John Wilson about his Catholic childhood and the influence that his former art teacher, the sculptor John Bunting had on him while he was at boarding school. Being taken by his father to the British Museum and seeing the colossal human-headed winged bulls, which once guarded an entrance to the citadel of the Assyrian king Sargon II (721-705 BC) captured his creative imagination. Gormley also chooses the life-changing experience of learning Vipassana meditation in India under the teacher S N Goenka, as one that has deeply informed his work.

Desert Island Discs Revisited: Comic Castaways 4 - Ricky Gervais

DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: COMIC CASTAWAYS 4 - RICKY GERVAIS (320kbs-m4a/98mb/43mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 31st March 2024

Comedian and writer Ricky Gervais is castaway Kirsty Young.

In just twelve episodes, his show The Office changed the face of British TV comedy. At its centre was the comic monster, David Brent, a middle-manager being filmed for a mock-documentary who saw the ever-present cameras as his route to popularity and fame. Ricky Gervais's performance was both excruciating and unmissable - one critic called the programme "among the most affecting and invigorating works of fiction since the turn of the century".

As he discusses with Kirsty Young, comedy was the language he grew up with - the youngest of four children, being able to come up with a gag or a smart rejoinder was the linguistic currency of his home. That, he says, is where the 'show-off performer' was born.

Now with seven BAFTAS, two Golden Globes and an Emmy to his name, Ricky is gratified that his work is recognised and says his aim has always been to bring art into comedy.

Desert Island Discs Revisited: Comic Castaways 4 - Tracey Ullman

DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: COMIC CASTAWAYS 4 - TRACEY ULLMAN (320kbs-m4a/97mb/42mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 24th March 2024

Actor and comedian Tracey Ullman is castaway by Lauren Laverne.

Tracey was the first woman to be offered her own TV sketch show – both in Britain and America – and has starred in film and TV dramas alongside Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett and Hugh Grant. The Emmy-winning Tracey Ullman Show ran for four seasons in the US and provided the launch pad for The Simpsons.

Tracey was born in Slough and as a child she would impersonate people and put on shows for the amusement of her mother after the death of her father. At 12 she won a scholarship to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London and worked in repertory theatre and the West End in London before her television career took off. She was one of the stars of the BBC's primetime sketch show Three of a Kind alongside David Copperfield and a young Lenny Henry.

In 1985 she moved to Los Angeles with her husband, the producer Allan McKeown, where her uncanny impressions of Americans from all walks of life won her acclaim and awards in equal measure.

After the death of her husband Tracey returned to the UK in 2016 and was soon back on our screens in a new sketch series, Tracey Ullman's Show, which showcased her enduring talent for sending up the powerful and the famous, including Dame Judi Dench, Angela Merkel and Theresa May.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: COMIC CASTAWAYS 4 - JOHNNY VEGAS (320kbs-m4a/97mb/42mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 18th March 2024

From Don McLean to Johnny Cash. Comedian Johnny Vegas talks to Kirsty Young about his music castaway choices.

As a stand-up comic he made his name as one of the most brilliant and unpredictable acts on the circuit. His stage persona was a belligerent drunk who would heckle his own audience. But the more successful he became, the more the similarities between his own life and his stage character seemed to blur. "I found popularity through self-destruction" he says, "and that can be quite addictive".

In recent years, he has cut down on his drinking, lost weight and now got engaged - all part of a plan to ensure he reached his 40th birthday and could be a proper father to his young son. "Life's actually turned around and been very good to me," he says.
