THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 57. BAABA MAAL (320kbs-m4a/99mb/43mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 6th May 2023
Senegalese singing star Baaba Maal on his formative influences.
Now one of West Africa's most internationally acclaimed musicians, Baaba Maal trained at a Paris conservatoire and went on to become a kind of musical ambassador, taking stories of his homeland all around the world. He has collaborated with Brian Eno and film composer Hans Zimmer, recorded an album with Mumford and Sons, and was a key member of the Africa Express touring project led by Damon Albarn. A festival favourite, Baaba Maal has energized crowds at Glastonbury and the BBC Proms alike. More recently, Marvel fans know him as the voice of Wakanda, having sung on the Black Panther movie soundtracks.
Baaba Maal talks about his early life in Senegal where, as the son of a fisherman, he wasn't expected to become a singer. He discusses the role of the griot in Senegalese storytelling and musical culture. He recalls early song-gathering trips around West Africa with his friend and collaborator Mansour Seck, his formal musical training in Paris, the powerful voice of Senegalese singer Sory Kandia Kouyaté, and meeting Nelson Mandela.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: SIMON PEGG (320kbs-m4a/98mb/43mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 14th May 2023
Simon Pegg is an actor and screenwriter who became a household name after appearing in two of Hollywood's most successful film franchises – Mission: Impossible and Star Trek. He also won many fans for co-creating the so-called Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy of films – Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and the World's End.
Simon was born in Gloucester and studied theatre, film and television at the University of Bristol. As a student he started performing stand-up routines with his pet goldfish called Roger who was a Marxist poet – albeit a silent one.
Simon first appeared on television in the mid-1990s and made a name for himself by co-creating the sitcom Spaced with the actor Jessica Hynes and the director Edgar Wright. He is one of the few performers to have achieved what Radio Times calls the "Holy Grail of Nerdom" – playing roles in Doctor Who, Star Trek – as Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott – and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He also co-wrote the screenplay for Star Trek Beyond.
In 2006 Simon played the British technician Benji Dunn in Mission: Impossible III and has appeared in every Mission: Impossible film since. He is currently filming the eighth instalment alongside Tom Cruise.

Palin's theatrical career began at Oxford University where he wrote and performed with friends. David Frost saw Palin and Terry Jones perform at the Edinburgh Festival and brought all future members of Monty Python together, first as writers for satirical TV show The Frost Report.
After finishing at Oxford, Palin compered a TV comedy show in Bristol, much to his parents' disappointment, but eventually convinced the BBC to commission Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Wendell Pierce is an American actor best known for his role as Bunk Moreland in the television series The Wire. Since the series ended in 2008, he has made around 40 film and television appearances, including Treme, Selma and the legal drama Suits, in which he played Robert Zane, the father of Rachel Zane, played by Meghan Markle. His theatre credits range from The Cherry Orchard to Death of a Salesman.
Born in 1963, the youngest of three sons, Wendell grew up in the Pontchartrain Park area of New Orleans, which was the first middle-class African-American suburban-style development in the city. He graduated from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York and his career got off to a flying start with a small part opposite Tom Hanks in a film called The Money Pit. He hasn't been out of work since.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed Wendell's childhood home in New Orleans and he was instrumental in rebuilding his parents' house in Pontchartrain Park. THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 54. LINTON KWESI JOHNSON (320kbs-m4a/98mb/43mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 15th April 2023
Reggae poet Linton Kwesi Johnson reveals the influences and experiences that inspired his own creativity. Born in Jamaica, he moved to south London in 1963 at the age of eleven. He made his name as a performance poet, reciting politically motivated verse to a dub-reggae backbeat, and becoming a powerful voice of resistance and protest in response to racism on the streets of Britain in the 1970s. He became the first black poet to be published in the Penguin Modern Classics series, was awarded the PEN Pinter Prize in 2020, and recently published a collection of prose under the title Time Come. On stage and on record, he is renowned for angry and uncompromising works such as Five Nights Of Bleeding, Sonny's Lettah, and Iglan Is a Bitch.
For This Cultural Life, Linton Kwesi Johnson recalls growing up in poverty in rural Jamaica, where his grandmother told him ghost stories and read The Bible. Appalled at the racism he experienced, he joined the Black Panthers whilst still at school and became a political activist. He began to write and perform poetry, set to music and delivered in Jamaican patois, after being inspired by reggae artists such as Prince Buster and U-Roy, and the American group The Last Poets. Johnson also talks about the tragic fire that killed 13 young partygoers in New Cross, south London in 1981, an event that he commemorated in one of his best known works, New Craas Massahkah.

ARCHIVE ON 4: COMMUTERVILLE (320kbs-m4a/130mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 19th April 2023
It's over 175 years since the word "commuter" was used for the first time. (The word does not in fact describe a traveller, it describes a transaction: regular travellers on the railroad into Manhattan were given the opportunity to "commute" their individual tickets into a season pass. Ever since, commuters have been both travellers and revenue stream.)
Today - our great cities inhale and exhale millions of commuters, who start their journey in the darkness of winter mornings in the suburbs, resurface blearily in the heart of the city and return to long tucked-in children in darkness.
It wasn't meant to be like this. Matthew Sweet looks at our imagined world of fantasy journeys and asks if driverless cars, monorails, or high speed transport systems might deliver them in the future.
Producer: Mark Rickards
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2018.

ARCHIVE ON 4: DRAMATIC BEATS (320kbs-m4a/129mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 25th February 2023
Best known for his prize winning poetry, Michael Symmons Roberts has also written numerous radio dramas over the years, and is a passionate advocate for one of the great cornerstones of British radio for the past one hundred years.
During that period, the BBC has commissioned more drama than any other organisation, leading one former head of the corporation's drama department to describe it as 'the National Theatre of the Air'.
In this edition of Archive On 4, Michael selects dramas from across the century that reflect the many features of the genre that help distinguish it from other narrative forms, noting just how many of our greatest writers have been attracted to try their hands at radio drama.
He begins his selection with the first ever surviving drama script written specifically for radio, A Comedy of Danger, set in the pitch black of a coal mine. To help them appreciate this whole new way of enjoying a play, listeners were encouraged to turn out their lights during the broadcast.
Guests include Caroline Raphael, Susan Roberts, Professor Tim Crook and Ayeesha Menon.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: DARA Ó BRIAIN (320kbs-m4a/97mb/42mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 26th March 2023
Dara Ó Briain has toured the world as a stand-up comedian, and hosted the BBC's satirical series Mock the Week for 17 years. A science graduate with a love of astronomy, he co-presented the BBC series Stargazing Live with Professor Brian Cox, and is a regular guest on television quizzes and panel shows.
Dara grew up in Bray, County Wicklow and attended Irish language schools, playing for the Gaelic football and hurling teams. He studied mathematical physics at University College Dublin where he took part in debating competitions and discovered a flair for getting laughs from an audience.
In 2001 he moved to the UK and, alongside performing at comedy gigs, he started appearing on television shows including Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Have I Got News For You. His love of mathematics came to the fore when he presented the game show School of Hard Sums and he has gone on to write popular science books for children.
Dara continues to perform stand-up and, when he's not touring what he calls his conversational and whimsical style of comedy, he lives in London with his wife and three children.

THE POET LAUREATE HAS GONE TO HIS SHED - PAM AYRES (320kbs-m4a/91mb/39mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 26th February 2023
If the poets of the past sat in their garrets dipping their quills in ink, waiting for inspiration to strike, our current Poet Laureate Simon Armitage has a more mundane and domestic arrangement. From his wooden shed in the garden, surrounded on all sides by the Pennine Hills, he's been working on a new kind of poem he's invented - the Flyku - inspired by the moths and butterflies he sees around him. Any distraction is welcome, even encouraged, to talk about creativity, music, art, sheds, music, poetry and the countryside.
This week, poet, songwriter, comedienne and TV presenter Pam Ayres joins Simon in the shed. Their conversation ranges from Pam's first TV appearance on Opportunity Knocks in the '70s, to her love of performing to live audiences, writing her latest book of poems, her passion for wildlife and nature and her latest TV series The Cotswolds and Beyond with Pam Ayres.
