BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 27th November 2022

AC/DC's frontman chats to Matt Everitt about the pivotal musical moments that took him from the streets of County Durham to fronting one of the biggest rock bands of all time.

From stories of hearing Little Richard through a neighbours window as a young boy, finding his talent for singing in a Scout show, to joining AC/DC in 1980 and flying off to the Bahamas to record what would become one of the biggest-selling albums of all time, he also talks candidly about the difficulties he faced when he lost his hearing and the revelatory new technology that's brought it back.

Picking tracks from the likes of Little Richard and Dan McCafferty along the way, Brian shares the music and memories with the down to earth North East humour that's never left him.

BERNARD CRIBBINS - BERNARD WHO? - 1. EARLY YEARS AND MAKING FILMS (320kbs-m4a/63mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 29th December 2022

Somehow Bernard Cribbins has earned a special place in the hearts of every generation; whether you're a fan of the Carry On films or his 1960s chart hits Right Said Fred and Hole in the Ground, grew up watching The Railway Children or listened to him read more than 100 classic tales on Jackanory. And he has continued to wow younger audiences as Wilfred Mott in Doctor Who, and most recently as the storytelling sailor Old Jack in the new BBC children's television series on CBeebies.

In the first of two programmes, Bernard looks back at his early career at Oldham Rep, where he started as an actor and assistant stage manager aged 13, on his national service with the parachute regiment in Palestine, and the big break that took him to London's West End, and from there to the Carry On films.

Barry Cryer, Barbara Windsor, the playwright Ray Cooney and Richard Briers, recorded shortly before his death, share their memories of Bernard the man and the performer.

Plus Bernard's personal recollections of working with the legendary Peter Sellers, Alfred Hitchcock and Peter Cushing.

BERNARD CRIBBINS - BERNARD WHO? - 2. FRED, THE WOMBLES AND THE RAILWAY CHILDREN (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 29th December 2022

In the last of two programmes, legendary Beatles producer George Martin recalls working with Bernard on the 1962 chart-toppers Right Said Fred and Hole in the Ground. Bernard reveals the secret to his storytelling magic on Jackanory, which captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation of children - including David Tennant. We hear how Bernard found the voices for Uncle Bulgaria and Tomsk in The Wombles and Jenny Agutter, his co-star in The Railway Children, discloses what she believes to be the secret of Bernard's eternal youth.

David Tennant and the writer Russell T Davies give their insights on working with Bernard on Dr Who, and the joy of reminding the viewing public what an exceptional actor he is. "He can break your heart with a single line," says Russell T Davies.

Paradise Lost: The Rise And Fall Of The Eldonian Dream

PARADISE LOST: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ELDONIAN DREAM (320kbs-m4a/85mb/37mins)

BBC Radio 4 podcast: 13th December 2022

A few hundred yards from the shiny new waterfront of the City Centre you'll find a unique urban oasis, carved out of the post-industrial dereliction of 80's Liverpool.

The Eldonian Village was designed to create community the residents would be proud to call home, and to cater for their lives from the cradle to the grave.

But 40 years on there are questions around what was a shining example of community-lead regeneration - so what has happened to this example of urban living which caught the eye of the then Prince Charles? Why is the urban idyll now a dilapidated weed-strewn shadow of its former self and how is it that the assets which made it such an enviable place to live now held thousands of miles away in off-shore accounts in the Caribbean?

Hendrix: Everything But The Guitar

HENDRIX: EVERYTHING BUT THE GUITAR (320kbs-m4a/122mb/53mins)

BBC Radio 4 podcast: 25th November 2022

When you think of Jimi Hendrix, you think of the guitar. Since the 1960s he's consistently topped polls of the greatest guitarist of all time. But there are so many other remarkable layers to this man and musician.

On what would have been his 80th birthday, fans from music, literature and academia weigh up all of the other things that should be celebrated about Jimi, but so often aren't: Leon Hendrix remembers his big brother as a spiritual force. Professor Paul Gilroy analyses Jimi's commitment to peace. Kronos Quartet violinist David Harrington discusses Jimi the composer. The Happy Mondays vocalist Rowetta appreciates Jimi the singer. Poet and cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib unpicks Jimi's approach to wordplay. And author and academic Sarita Cannon evaluates Jimi as a mixed heritage icon.

Meanwhile, 1960s archive interviews from Hendrix give us a fresh perspective on the man himself.

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 25th December 2022

Kirsty Young was the award-winning presenter of Desert Island Discs between 2006 and 2018, interviewing 496 castaways. Her TV work includes BAFTA-winning coverage of events marking the centenary of World War One, and memorable live presentation from Windsor of the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II earlier this year.

Kirsty was born in East Kilbride in Scotland. After a chance meeting with a freelance TV cameraman, she became interested in a media career, and worked as a runner and then a researcher for an independent production company, before joining BBC Radio Scotland as a trainee news and continuity announcer, beating 700 other applicants.

She moved to Scottish Television in 1992, and five years later she was part of the launch of Channel 5, presenting its main news programme while famously perching on the studio desk rather than sitting behind it. She also presented the BBC's Crimewatch for many years.

In 2018, Kirsty had to step back from broadcasting, to undergo treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. After four years away from the microphone, she returned to present coverage of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June this year.

Desert Island Discs Revisited: Lost Gems - Dudley Moore CBE

DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: LOST GEMS -
DUDLEY MOORE CBE (320kbs-m4a/67mb/29mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 25th December 2022

From Blood, Sweat & Tears to Ludwig van Beethoven.

Comedian, composer, pianist and actor Dudley Moore shares his castaway choices with Roy Plomley.

Born in Dagenham, Essex, Dudley recalls how his gift for music won him an organ scholarship to Oxford's Magdalen College. He left in 1958 as an accomplished jazz pianist, performing with Johnny Dankworth and touring the US for a year with the Vic Lewis band.

On his return, he met the late Peter Cook and was asked to join the Edinburgh Festival comedy revue, Beyond The Fringe in 1960. Also starring Alan Bennett and Jonathan Miller, the extended show went on to run for four years in London's West End and on Broadway in New York.

Dudley explains how his partnership with Peter led to the creation of their classic characters Dud and Pete for BBC TV. Writing film scores also kept him busy.

Dudley Moore went on to pursue a successful career in Hollywood, starring in a number of hit screen comedies. Most memorably he played alongside Bo Derek in the movie 10 in 1979. His role as a hard-drinking millionaire in 1981's Arthur won him an Oscar nomination.

By the late 1990s, Moore endured a number of illnesses – developing the rare condition Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He revealed how the affliction sadly robbed him of his greatest pleasure - his ability to play music.

Married and divorced four times, Dudley Moore was awarded a CBE in 2001.

Born in 1935, he died aged 66 in 2002.

Desert Island Myths: Three Centuries Of Robinson Crusoe

DESERT ISLAND MYTHS: THREE CENTURIES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 29th November 2022

Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe was first published on 25 April 1719. By the end of the 19th century it had become the most reissued, adapted and translated novel in the world.

Over the years, this island adventure story has been interpreted in a huge variety of ways: by critics as the first ever novel in English; by political theorists as an allegory of colonialism; by economists as a story of primitive accumulation; by anthropologists as a classic statement of nature and civilisation; and by educationalists as a story of learning by doing.

The book has also inspired countless creative works, from Gulliver's Travels, Swiss Family Robinson and Treasure Island to Lost In Space, Cast Away and The Martian. Not forgetting several reality TV shows and the ever popular Desert Island Discs.

Over 300 years on from Robinson Crusoe's publication, cultural historian Christopher Frayling sets sail through the BBC archive to explore the creation and legacy of this controversial text.

Interviewees:

Charles Boyle, author of Good Morning, Mr Crusoe
