The Reunion - Grange Hill

THE REUNION - GRANGE HILL (320kbs-m4a/95mb/42mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 14th August 2022

The most popular faces from the early days of pioneering children's drama Grange Hill are reunited. Todd Carty, Susan Tully and Lee MacDonald take Kirsty Wark back to school.

When Grange Hill hit our screens in 1978 it was the first time ordinary British schoolchildren had seen characters like themselves reflected on screen. Phil Redmond's pioneering drama, set in a fictional north London comprehensive school, ran for 30 years, making it one of the longest-running programmes on British television.

Controversial storylines included racism, periods, bullying and drugs. Inevitably there were complaints. Teachers and parents were scandalised by the upstart pupils who spoke back to teachers and agitated to ban school uniform. It didn't stop the BBC instantly commissioning a second series with double the number of episodes.

Todd Carty, who played heartthrob Tucker Jenkins, got fan mail by the sack-load and won his own spin-off series Tucker's Luck. Susan Tully, who played the bright but troubled Suzanne Ross, nearly left the series early after her Dad lost his job.

Lee MacDonald played Zammo McGuire who famously got hooked on heroin. The plotline sparked the recording of the hit anti-drugs single Just Say No by cast members and prompted an invite to the White House.

Also joining Kirsty is Erkan Mustafa whose character Roland Browning was bullied for his size, and Simone Nylander whose famous line; "I just want to help you Ro-land" became a national catchphrase.

Many of the cast went on to find fame in other long-running British dramas, most famously Tully and Carty who played siblings Michelle and Mark Fowler in Eastenders. For others though, the mass adulation ended once they walked through the gates of Grange Hill for the last time and back to real life.

The Reunion - The Day Today

THE REUNION - THE DAY TODAY (320kbs-m4a/94mb/41mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 15th August 2021

Kirsty Wark brings together the cast of comedy show The Day Today. First broadcast in 1994, this six-part series savaged the business of TV news.

Coming off the back of the hugely successful and award-winning Radio 4 comedy On the Hour, Armando Iannucci, Chris Morris and cast brought their characters into the living rooms of millions. There was hapless sports reporter Alan Partridge, Peter O'Hanraha-hanrahan, Rosy May and the eponymous newsreader and host Chris Morris.

Satirising the form of news presentation, with a groundbreaking use of comedic graphics and music that always went on slightly too long, the joke was always on the pomposity of news and how it was presented.

Armando Iannucci, co-creator (with Chris Morris) and series producer, came up with the concept while on a BBC training course.

Patrick Marber played hapless reporter Peter O'Hanraha-hanrahan among other characters.

David Schneider, who was in a double act at university with Armando, contrived the very first early demos and was a regular cast member throughout.

Steve Coogan was drafted in after the initial pilot for On The Hour to help create a realistic sports reporter, who later morphed into Alan Partridge.

Doon Mackichan played multiple characters in The Day Today, as well as shows that followed, such as Brass Eye and Alan Partridge.

This Cultural Life - 44. Tim Minchin

THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 44. TIM MINCHIN (320kbs-m4a/98mb/43mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 5th November 2022

Comedian, actor and composer Tim Minchin wrote the songs for the musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl story Matilda which, after more than a decade of sell-out West End shows, has now also been adapted for the big screen. His stage musical version of the film Groundhog Day earned him an Olivier award and seven Tony nominations on Broadway. He also co-wrote and starred in the television comedy drama series Upright, and has performed solo shows around the world.

Tim Minchin tells John Wilson about his most important cultural influences and creative inspirations, starting with his upbringing in Perth, Australia. He recalls his earliest attempts at songwriting, influenced by TS Eliot and 90s grunge rock bands, which led to him writing a musical version of Love's Labour's Lost for a youth theatre company whilst he was still at school. Tim chooses the American singer-songwriter Ben Folds as one of his key influences, and particularly the 1997 Ben Folds Five album Whatever Ever And Ever, Amen. He also cites being commissioned to write the songs for The Royal Shakespeare Company's Matilda The Musical, and working with director Matthew Warchus, as a major turning creative turning point. Perhaps surprisingly, Tim chooses an ill-fated musical project, Larrikins, as another important moment in his career. He reflects on how the animated adventure, which was due to star Hugh Jackman and Margot Robbie, was cancelled by studio bosses and the effect that experience had on him.

Shackleton & MC Yallah - Late Junction Session

SHACKLETON & MC YALLAH - LATE JUNCTION SESSION 04.11.22 (320kbs-m4a/65mb/25mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 4th November 2022

Verity Sharp shares the results of our latest long-distance collaboration session, between enigmatic English producer Shackleton and Kenyan rapper MC Yallah.

Growing up amongst what he has described as the rugged and merciless landscapes of Northern England, Shackleton is a producer in his own lane, a purveyor of stark and uncompromising electronic rhythms and textures. Founder of record labels Skull Disco and Woe To The Septic Heart!, his music defies categorisation, drawing elements from the worlds of dubstep, techno and ambient, as well as musique concrète, Indonesian gamelan and Moroccan gnawa. Now based in Berlin, his latest EP, The Majestic Yes, builds on the rhythms of Senegalese sabar drum rhythms to craft a web of intricately layered musical explorations.

Kenyan rapper MC Yallah has been a formidable figure in the Ugandan hip hop scene since the 90s. An affiliate of the Nyege Nyege crew since its inception in 2013, her fierce and intense lyrics are drawn from real-life experiences and often address women's issues. Delivering her words in a range of languages including Kiswahili, Luganda, English and Luo, MC Yallah's artistry is shot through with integrity and self-determination.

Being Jackie Wilson

BEING JACKIE WILSON (320kbs-m4a/63mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 5th September 2022

Soul and rhythm and blues singer Jackie Wilson was a legendary artist and performer. Elvis Presley labelled himself 'the white Jackie Wilson' and Michael Jackson dedicated his 1984 Grammy for Thriller to Jackie in a heartfelt speech.

DJ and presenter Scarlett O'Malley has also had a life-long obsession with Jackie Wilson. So when she discovered there was a Jackie Wilson tribute artist called Bobby Brooks she wanted to know more. How do you come to impersonate a legend like Jackie? She meets Bobby in New York and uncovers an extraordinary tale.

Bobby has been impersonating Jackie Wilson since the 1990s. He grew up in foster care, a poorly, sick child. He never knew his mum or dad and his name was given to him by the state. As a young adult he joined the Navy and found himself in Hawaii. It was in a Karaoke bar one night, singing, that Bobby was first spotted by music producer Peter Hernandez. He was persuaded to sing with Peter's doo-wop group the Love Notes.

Over the next few years people would often comment that he looked just like Jackie Wilson. On the advice of another music producer, Bobby began to sing and perform the odd Jackie number and eventually he was persuaded to try a full impersonation. His career took off. People adored him being Jackie Wilson.

It was during a Legends in Concert tour in Atlantic City that Bobby met Motown's The Four Tops, and discovered something extraordinary that would change his life forever.

With interviews from soul singers Bettye Lavette and Michael Lizzmore aka Blasé, vocal coach and singer Johnny Valentine, and Blues and Soul founder John Abbey.

Desert Island Discs: Rick Rubin

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: RICK RUBIN (320kbs-m4a/100mb/44mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 23rd October 2022

Rick Rubin is a multiple Grammy-winning record producer who has worked with a wide range of artists including Adele, the Beastie Boys and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He also reinvigorated the career of Johnny Cash in the 1990s, with a series of acclaimed stripped-back albums, introducing the legendary Man in Black to a new audience.

Rick was born on Long Island in New York in 1963. As a teenager, his first love was punk, but he soon became entranced by New York's emerging rap scene and started hanging out in hip hop clubs to discover more about what was then considered to be an underground form of music. In 1984 he co-founded Def Jam Recordings from his dorm room at university and produced rap records for T La Rock and LL Cool J.

Together with his business partner, promoter Russell Simmons, Rick took rap into the mainstream by putting rappers Run-DMC and rock band Aerosmith together to cover Aerosmith's Walk This Way. It enjoyed international success and became hip hop's first crossover hit.

In 1993 Rick approached the country singer Johnny Cash about working together. By that time Johnny, who was in his sixties, had been dropped by his record label and was performing at dinner theatres to small audiences. In his mind his career was over. Rick persuaded him to record again and released the album American Recordings in 1994. Lauded by the critics, the album led to a creative collaboration that lasted until Johnny's death in 2003.

Rick's more recent work includes the album The New Abnormal by the Strokes, which won the band their first ever Grammy last year.

This Cultural Life - 38. James Corden

THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 38. JAMES CORDEN (320kbs-m4a/98mb/43mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 24th September 2022

Actor, writer and comedian James Corden reveals the most important people, events and cultural works that inspired his own creativity. He's now probably best known as an Emmy-winning television chat show host, although he recently announced that he would step down from The Late Late Show in 2023. James Corden is the co-creator of the much-loved BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey, for which he won a BAFTA. His stage work includes Alan Bennett's National Theatre play The History Boys, and the starring role in One Man Two Guvnors, which won him a Tony Award after it transferred to Broadway. His film roles include Oceans 8, Peter Rabbit, Into The Woods and The Prom.

James Corden reveals how he wanted to entertain audiences from a very young age, and his theatrical ambitions were encouraged by his father who would take him to see musicals. He chooses the experience of seeing Gary Wilmot starring in the stage show Me and My Girl as one of his most important inspirations. He also reflects on the experience of working for writer-director Shane Meadows on the film 24/7, which starred Bob Hoskins, and the huge influence on his own work of filmmaker Mike Leigh. James also chooses the television comedy drama series The Royle Family as one of the inspirations for his series Gavin and Stacey, which he co-wrote with Ruth Jones. Reflecting on his recent decision to leave The Late Late Show, he reveals that he was persuaded to move on and pursue new creative challenges by a David Bowie quote.

This Cultural Life - 34. Norman Foster

THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 34. NORMAN FOSTER (320kbs-m4a/98mb/43mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 27th August 2022

Norman Foster discusses the key cultural influences and experiences that led him to become one of the world's most important living architects. Baron Foster of Thames Bank founded Foster and Partners in 1967, a practise which specialises in urban master-planning, civic, cultural, office and airport developments. His most famous designs include the Great Court of the British Museum, the Reichstag in Berlin, Millau Viaduct in France, the Apple headquarters in California, Wembley Stadium, Beijing Airport, and the London tower known as 'the Gherkin'.

At 87 years old, and still working as executive chairman of his company, Norman Foster looks back to his working class childhood in Manchester when he first became fascinated with the built environment in the post-war years. He recalls taking two books from the local library - on the architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier - which helped focus his early fascination with architecture. After studying at Manchester University's school of architecture, Norman Foster won a scholarship to study at Yale University in Connecticut. It was there he met Richard Rogers, with whom he became firm friends and started taking long road trips across America to seek out landmark buildings. On return to the UK, Foster and Rogers set up their first architectural practise Team Four, along with their wives Wendy Cheeseman and Su Brumwell. Foster tells This Cultural Life about his continuing fascination with the design process, after a five decade career that has seen him win the most prestigious architecture prizes, including the Pritzker, the Praemium Imperiale Award, and the RIBA Gold Medal.

Outlook - My Hunt For Rodriguez, A Missing Music Legend

OUTLOOK - MY HUNT FOR RODRIGUEZ, A MISSING MUSIC LEGEND (320kbs-m4a/93mb/40mins)

BBC World Service broadcast: 1st September 2022

Stephen 'Sugar' Segerman's nickname came from the song Sugar Man by the American singer Rodriguez. In 1970s South Africa, Rodriguez was a household name as his anti-establishment lyrics resonated with many of those opposed to the strict apartheid state. Sugar, a Cape Town record shop owner, was one of his adoring fans. Very little was known about Rodriguez, apart from that he was dead; rumour had it that he'd killed himself during an unsuccessful concert. But years later, when Sugar decided to find out what had happened to him, he uncovered something astonishing.

Kate Bush: The Power Of Strange Things

KATE BUSH: THE POWER OF STRANGE THINGS (320kbs-m4a/129mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 1st October 2022

To celebrate Kate Bush's sudden and enormous popularity with a whole new generation as well as the 40th anniversary of her revolutionary album The Dreaming, (which Kate called her "I've gone mad" album) Ann Powers, NPR music critic and lifelong Kate Bush fan, tells the story of the rise of the ultimate outsider who inspired a generation of creatives - from writer Jeanette Winterson to Netflix Directors the Duffer Brothers, and Ann herself.

In 1978, a 19 year old Kate Bush became the youngest woman to have a self written number one in the UK with Wuthering Heights. In 2022, now 64, she made musical history again - this time as the oldest female chart topper too, with 1985's Running up that Hill shooting to the top of the charts after capturing the hearts and ears of Generations Z when it was used in Netflix's Stranger Things.

In that series, the song comes to the rescue of leading girl Max - but in this edition of Archive on 4, Ann Powers reveals how Kate Bush's music has been saving and inspiring people for five decades.

Ann charts Kate's remarkable creative odyssey, her incredible ability to distil epic fantastical stories and romances into four-minute pop songs, and her invented new synth sounds.

Punctuated by the songs, including beautiful demo recordings and early BBC Radio and TV appearances, we also hear from the latest generation of singers inspired by Kate Bush, including jazz sensation Cécile McLorin Salvant

Archive On 4: Paul Verhoeven's American Future

PAUL VERHOEVEN'S AMERICAN FUTURE (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 24th September 2022

The writer Ken Hollings explores the American futures as depicted in Paul Verhoeven's Robocop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers with Verhoeven & many of his key collaborators. 'Would you like to know more?'

With Robocop, Verhoeven's first instinct was to throw the script in the bin. History has proved otherwise. Robocop's punk-ass takedown of ruthless corporations in the age of Reagan remains a gleeful assault on American capitalism. 'Good business is where you find it' whether its the boardroom or the coke lab. Amid all that is set the poignant tale of Officer Murphy's death & resurrection as man machine.

Total Recall cemented Verhoeven's reputation as the wickedly ironic & brazen blockbuster king. Adapted from a Philip K. Dick short story, once again ruthless corporate forces control the very air that Martian colonists breath. The mutant underground are the resistance as Arnold Schwarzenegger undergoes the ultimate trip - or does he?

Starship Troopers wickedly deconstructs its Robert Heinlein source novel. A classic platoon movie of forever war. Its fresh-faced, gung ho, beautiful soap stars are put into the mincer of war and mutilated by bugs. But are we really the good guys - and isn't that charming Neil Patrick Harris in full fascist regalia? 'Do you want to know more?'

Joining Verhoeven are writers Ed Neumeier, Mike Miner and Gary Goldman, producer Jon Davison, actor Kurtwood Smith, sound designer Stephen Flick & stop motion wizard Phil Tippett with archive of Miguel Ferrer, Basil Poledouris & screenwriter Ronald Shusett.

Desert Island Discs: Classic Desert Island Discs - Stephen Graham

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: CLASSIC DESERT ISLAND DISCS - STEPHEN GRAHAM (320kbs-m4a/75mb/33mins)

BBC Radio 4 podcast: 4th September 2022

Lauren Laverne's castaway is the actor Stephen Graham, in a programme first broadcast in 2019.

Stephen Graham is an actor, whose credits include key roles in films including This is England and The Irishman, and in TV dramas such as Boardwalk Empire and Line of Duty.

Stephen was born in Kirkby just outside Liverpool in 1973. He discovered acting at school, where a starring role in a production of Treasure Island at the age of 10 was a turning point: local actor Andrew Schofield was in the audience and suggested that Stephen should join the Everyman Youth Theatre in Liverpool.

After leaving school, Stephen won a place to study drama in London, but left after a year. His first roles as a professional actor, when he once pretended to be his own agent to talk his way into an audition, gave little indication of the success to come. In 2006, his performance as Combo the skinhead in This is England, directed by Shane Meadows, won widespread critical acclaim. More recently, he has played Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire, and the undercover policeman Corbett in the most recent series of Line of Duty.

Stephen, who lives in Leicestershire, is married to fellow actor Hannah Walters, who he met at drama school.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: JAY BLADES (320kbs-m4a/79mb/34mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 25th September 2022

Jay Blades is a furniture restorer who is best known for presenting the Repair Shop on BBC One. The programme, which attracts many millions of viewers, brings old and damaged family treasures back to life and has been praised for its celebration of craftsmanship and the values of kindness and patience.

Jay grew up in Hackney in East London and was brought up by his mother Barbara. He struggled to read as a young boy which held him back at school and he left at 16. Years later, after he got a place to study criminology and philosophy at university, he was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 31.

He worked as a community worker for many years and co-founded charities which helped disadvantaged young people learn new skills. One of his charities was based in High Wycombe – an area famous for its historic furniture trade – and Jay learned how to restore furniture alongside the teenagers he was helping.

Later he started his own furniture restoration business and in 2017 he started presenting the Repair Shop. He recently set up his own television production company and has written books about DIY and his experiences on the Repair shop. In 2021 he was awarded an MBE for services to craft.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: JOHN LEGEND (320kbs-m4a/80mb/35mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 7th August 2022

The American singer and songwriter John Legend has won two Emmys, 12 Grammys, an Oscar and a Tony award – making him one of only 16 living artists to have won all four honours. One of his songs, All of Me, written for his wife, the model Chrissy Teigen, has been streamed more than four billion times on digital platforms.

He was born John Stephens in Springfield, Ohio into a musical family. His father played drums in church, where his mother conducted the choir. John took piano lessons from an early age and soon became involved in arranging music for the church.

He attended university at the age of 16 and after graduating worked as a management consultant for four years, while pursuing his interest in music out of office hours. He signed his first record deal after working with Kanye West early in his career, and took on the stage name John Legend, releasing his first solo album in 2004.

Alongside his musical career, he has acted on TV and film, including a role in the highly successful La La Land. He has performed at three Presidential inauguration ceremonies – for President Obama in 2009 and 2013, and for President Biden in 2021.
