THE KESKIDEE (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 29th July 2022
Oral Historian Alan Dein pieces together the remarkable and pioneering story of the Keskidee, Britain's first arts centre for the black community.
Founded in the early 1970's and tucked away in a church hall in the backstreets of Islington, London, it forged new ground for a generation of black British poets, actors, artists and directors.
Dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson was the educational officer at the Keskidee and Bob Marley shot the music video for 'Is This Love?' there. It had its own drama company, artists in residence and was a hub for African and Afro-Caribbean politics and arts, as well as a creative nursery for home-grown talent. It also catered for the needs of local youth and gave a generation of black teenagers a space of their own.
But this massively influential cultural centre also has a fascinating earlier history, when it served as a progressive mission hall with a musical pastor and a legendary silver band. Today the building has reverted to being a religious base, housing an African church and a devout and joyous congregation.
Dein joins up the hidden history of Gifford Hall which has played host to three different communities, but which, curiously, have much in common.

THE 12 INCH SINGLE (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 22nd July 2022
From the mid-1970s the humble 7 inch vinyl single was joined by a much grander relative - the 12 inch single.
It reached its peak in 1983 with Blue Monday by New Order, probably the biggest selling 12 inch single of all time.
Music Journalist and co-founder of ZTT Records, Paul Morley visits the Factory Club in Manchester to talk to Peter Hook of New Order about how Blue Monday was written and to designer Peter Saville about the famous sleeve.
Paul explores the origins of the 12 inch single as a potentially higher quality format than the 7 inch single and visits Abbey Road studios to watch an engineer cutting a 12 inch single. Does it really sound better?
And he meets music producer Trevor Horn at Sarm Studios, home of ZTT records, to discuss the Frankie Goes to Hollywood 12 inch singles. ZTT released so many different versions of Two Tribes on 12 inch that the chart rules were changed - so was the record buyer getting value for money?
And what does the 12 inch single tell us about 1980s excesses?
Producer: Nick Holmes
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in March 2012.

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 10th May 2022
On Boxing Day 2013, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon from the Clash treated 6Music listeners to two hours of their favourite tunes and some rock n' roll tales in their first ever radio show: This is Radio Clash.
A mysterious character called Bernie also makes some special disguised appearances. Formed in 1976 in the vanguard of British punk, the Clash would soon become one of the most iconic rock bands of their era, a symbol of intelligent protest and stylish rebellion in the turbulent years of the late Seventies and early Eighties. Just as importantly, they were to become unflinching musical pioneers, integrating first militant reggae, then dub, funk, jazz and hip-hop into their music, which has helped to make them one of the most respected and sampled bands by modern DJs and dance musicians. Cracking the Top 10 in America in 1982 - before splitting three years later - they were to leave behind an extraordinary recorded legacy.

STEVE LAMACQ ALBUM CLUB - THE CLASH'S LONDON CALLING (320kbs-m4a/178mb/1hr18mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 26th January 2022
Join the album club and listen along as Steve Lamacq plays the whole of The Clash's ground breaking 3rd album London Calling.
"If music-loving aliens land and you find yourself, at laser-point, searching for one single example of how rock is supposed to be rolled, then you are strongly advised to recommend London Calling. Because this epic double album, from its iconic sleeve to its wildly eclectic mash-up of styles, is surely the quintessential rock album.
So good in fact that Rolling Stone magazine voted it the best album of the 1980s, even though it actually came out in 1979. This was when The Clash came of age, progressing from the brilliant-but-limited punk rock ire of their first two albums to the stage where they could turn their hand to reggae, ska, rockabilly and pretty much anything else they fancied.
Yet the record never lacks focus and Strummer and Jones' willingness to experiment is never let down by a lack of great songs. Pick from straight-up punk like "Death Or Glory", sweet pop like "Lost In The Supermarket" or dub like the Paul Simenon-penned "Guns of Brixton". They're even confident enough to leave possibly the best song of all, "Train In Vain", un-credited on the sleeve when any other band would be screaming its presence from the rooftops.
Truly, a record so brilliant you'd have to be from another planet not to love it."

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 26th August 2022
Ice cream vans, cricket matches and inflatable kayaks. Throughout the summer we've been exploring the outside world, with listeners sending in their self-made field recordings capturing the sounds of summer. To round off the season, Jennifer Lucy Allan shares a special mixtape from People Like Us aka Vicki Bennett, weaving these recordings into her own unique style of montage. Bennett sees sampling as folk art in the age of mechanical reproduction, with all of the sharing and cross-referencing incumbent to a populist form. Since the early 90s she has been repurposing pre-existing footage to craft audiovisual collages, delving into the surreal with a dark and witty take on popular culture.

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 28th August 2021
For a special finale to the current series, Simon Armitage travels to Wales to talk to HRH Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales in his Welsh home, Llwynywermod, in Llandovery. Swapping his shed in the Pennines for a barn beside the Brecon Beacons, Simon weaves the conversation around themes of creativity, inspiration and nature. He speaks to The Prince of Wales about the flora and fauna of their surroundings, his passion for conservation, the music of Wagner, and the former Poet Laureate Ted Hughes. At one point, the doors of the big barn are thrown open and Prince Charles takes Simon through a series of hay meadows that surround the former farm, pointing out the trees that have been planted since he took over the property, including the maple trees used to line the aisle of Westminster Abbey for Prince William's wedding to Kate Middleton.

SOUL MUSIC: SERIES 23 - 4. THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER (320kbs-m4a/63mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 28th June 2022
America's national anthem was written by a lawyer, Francis Scott Key, after watching the British navy bombing Fort McHenry in 1814.
It was set to an English social men's club song and recognized as the national anthem in 1889. Notoriously difficult to sing, and traditionally played at public sports events and orchestral concerts, the anthem has inspired emotion and attracted controversy.
We hear from:
Dr John Carlos who along with Dr Tommie Smith, raised their fists on the Olympic podium in the Mexico City Olympics in 1968 as the anthem was played.
Jose Feliciano who sang the anthem at the 1968 World series and provoked criticism.
Conrad Netting IV who discovered the truth about his fighter pilot father's history which led him to a cemetery in Normandy.
Writer Crista Cloutier who associated it with President Obama's election.
Members of the Coldstream Guards band who played the anthem at the changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace the day after 9/11.
And Leon Hendrix, Jimi's brother, who was in the army at the time of Woodstock, and was put on 'potato peeling duty' because of the 'dishonourable' version his brother had played.
Producer: Sara Conkey

Born Clifford Joseph Price, Goldie was brought up in care homes and with foster families in the west Midlands. After establishing himself as a graffiti artist, he began to make dance music and, with his 1995 debut album Timeless, was a pioneer of the drum'n'bass sounds that dominated club culture throughout the decade. Alongside work as a DJ around the world, Goldie has also taken on various acting roles, including in the James Bond film the World Is Not Enough and, on television, playing a gangster in Eastenders. He was also runner-up in the 2008 reality show Maestro, in which contestants learned to conduct a symphony orchestra. The following year, he was the subject of a television documentary in which he composed a piece of contemporary classical music that was performed at the BBC Proms.
Goldie's choices for This Cultural Life include hearing David Bowie's 1969 Space Oddity when he was in care, and relating to its theme of isolation and abandonment. He also talks about the huge influence of seeing the 1983 documentary Style Wars, about the emerging hip hop scene in New York in the early 1980s, and the role of graffiti artists in reclaiming the subway trains and the walls of railway yards as their unofficial galleries. Goldie also reveals that the American jazz guitarist and composer Pat Metheny is one of his biggest influences, despite working in a very different musical field.

THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 28. ARMANDO IANNUCCI (320kbs-m4a/96mb/42mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 28th May 2022
Writer and director Armando Iannucci reveals the most important artistic influences and experiences that have shaped his own work. Armando was the creative force behind Radio 4's news satire series On The Hour, which moved to television as The Day Today and launched the career of Alan Partridge. He wrote and directed the political comedy series The Thick Of It, and the long-running American TV series Veep. His big screen credits include In The Loop, The Death Of Stalin and The Personal History Of David Copperfield.
Armando recalls his Italian-Scottish family upbringing in Glasgow, where his lifelong love of classical music was first forged in Hillhead Public Library. A fan of radio comedy from a young age, he talks about the impact of hearing the 1978 radio comedy The Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, whose central character Arthur Dent is, like many of Iannucci's own comic creations, a man way out of his depth as events spin out of control.
The 2003 invasion of Iraq is chosen by Armando as an event that had a big influence on his decision to create political satires The Thick Of It and its big screen spin-off In The Loop, in which government ministers and their advisors struggle to navigate a political path littered with inconvenient facts and rules. Reflecting on his work as a director, Armando Iannucci cites the American filmmaker Sidney Lumet as another major inspiration, with movies including Network, Dog Day Afternoon, Twelve Angry Men and The Verdict.

HAPPY DAYS - THE CHILDREN OF THE STONES (320kbs-m4a/65mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 4th May 2022
Writer and comedian Stewart Lee explores the ground breaking television series Children of the Stones and examines its special place in the memories of those children who watched it on its initial transmission in a state of excitement and terror.
The programme includes contributions from series co-creator Jeremy Burnham, singer Julian Cope, cast members and fans.
In 1977 HTV launched the revolutionary children's television drama telling the story of an astrophysicist and his son who arrive in the village of Milbury to study ancient stones. The residents greet each other with the phrase "Happy day", and the community is held in a strange captivity by the psychic forces generated by the circle of giant Neolithic stones which surround it.
Filmed at Avebury in Wiltshire, it is a strangely atmospheric production with the baleful, discordant wailing voices of the incidental music increasing the tension.
The story, involving a temporal paradox and issues of individuality and community assimilation thematically challenged the after-school audience, which included Stewart Lee.
In this documentary Lee returns to Avebury to discuss the serial's impact, examine its influence on him and explore the history and secrets of the ancient stones.
1970s kids may have dived behind the sofa during Doctor Who, but it was Children of the Stones that gave them nightmares.
The series is frequently cited by those who remember it as one of the scariest things they saw as children.

HIGHWAY 61: FIFTY YEARS ON (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 25th July 2022
Andy Kershaw re-examines the Bob Dylan album that changed popular music and his life.
Beginning with the resounding hit of a snare drum, Like A Rolling Stone starts Bob Dylan's first fully electrified album, Highway 61 Revisited.
When he first heard the song in his mother's car, Bruce Springsteen said it was "like somebody kicked open the door to your mind." The album represents the birth of rock music, as opposed to the pop or beat music that preceded its release.
It sounds as subversive now as it did in 1965.
Besides revolutionising popular music, the album transformed the life of broadcaster Andy Kershaw. For him, nothing would be the same after Highway 61.
Andy travels to America to meet the surviving musicians and hear the extraordinary stories behind the recording sessions.
Dylan was only 24 years old when he walked into Columbia Studio A in New York City to record the album in June 1965. For a masterpiece record, it is all the more remarkable that almost no preparation, and absolutely no rehearsal, went into it.
Al Kooper, who was brought in as an observer, tells how he mistakenly and fortunately found himself playing the organ on Like A Rolling Stone, discovering the song's melody on the spot.
Bassist Harvey Brooks talks about the patience that was required to work with the unorthodox Dylan. Legendary Nashville musician Charlie McCoy describes how he was accidentally brought in to play the memorable Spanish-sounding guitar on Desolation Row.
And Keith Richards provides a surprising take on Highway 61's legacy.
