Each year the Senegalese king of music, Baaba Maal, invites musicians across the region to play at the Blues du Fleuve festival, Festival of the River.
It's held somewhere along the Senegal River on the northern edge of the country.
The river is the key - it runs from Guinea through Mali, Mauritania and Senegal - the countries that were once unified in the kingdom of Mali, the most musical region in Africa and Baaba has invited musicians from all these countries to perform at the festival.
This year the English cellist Adrian Brendel travels with his instrument to the most remote festival location ever, to immerse himself in the music. He makes his way to the desert town of Demet on the Senegal side of the river and to Bogue on the Mauritanian side, to hear traditional singing of the griots, spine tingling laments from Mauritania's Veyrouz, love songs from Guinea's Binta Laly Sow next to the finest hip hop artists including Duggy Tee.
Baaba's own band Daande Lenol draws thousands - young and old. The band's name means the "Voice of the People" and they follow him in droves.
Baaba is increasingly deemed a guide for these people - collectively the Fulani - and he represents peace and wisdom in a culturally threatened region.
He and Adrian share a passion for music and discuss differences in their approach. Baaba describes his alarm at the upheaval in Mali along with sadness that music has been banned as part of the repressive regime. Adrian plays with different musicians, ultimately going on stage with Daande Lenol.

Nick Baker reflects on how the impact of technology has changed, from the dawn of language to the age of virtual reality - via a three hour showcase of archive programmes and interviews.
Hour 1: HARDWARE:
* Fry's English Delight: Stephen Fry ponders the physicality of written language, from its earliest scrawlings to the digital age.
* The Persistence of Analogue Tech-writer Leigh Alexander says despite the boundless conveniences of the digital world, it can sometimes feel like something's been lost in the transition to an always-on virtual society.
Hour 2: SOFTWARE
Nick revisits two of the past music software formats that used to dominate.
* The Curse of the Cassette From 1997 - Nick Baker recalls the downside of a design classic, yet much reviled format.
* The AB of CD From 1988 - Simon Bates looks at what the then revolutionary medium would bring to pop music and Nick meets Simon Rooks from the BBC archives.
Hour 3: ANYWHERE
Nick looks at bigger changes in our physical perceptions, and experiences a new medium – Virtual Reality, as developed in the BBC Virtual Reality hub.
* The Digital Human - Between In addition to virtual reality, Aleks Krotoski, probes a different, more subtle way in which digital tech changes our perception of personal space.
Nick rounds off his showcase with a warning from literature, and from history.
Stephen Fry joins him to discuss the 1909 novella, 'The Machine Stops' which envisages a physical world changed, if not destroyed by technology. But what happens when that technology breaks down?

It's the Boy Lamacq vs The BBC. Steve kicks off his Summer Soundclash series as he takes on BBC News presenter Ros Atkins in a battle of beats.
Both will be delving into their record collections to pull out some classic tracks and stone cold bangers. Ros previously joined the programme earlier this year when he shared a drum & bass DJ mix for our Desert Island Disco All-Dayer. The BBC's Analysis Editor, who presents Outside Source on the BBC News channel and is known for his viral explainer videos on social media, recently revealed that he was a drum & bass DJ back in his 20s. His Mix back in January was inspired by nights spent at Electric Brixton in South London and the likes of LTJ Bukem, Ray Keith, DJ Storm, Dillinja, DJ Hype and Kenny Ken.
In this battle of the beats he goes up against The Boy Lamacq on the wheels of steel, with both Ros and Steve selecting records during the last hour of the programme.

Jennifer Lucy Allan shares a mixtape from pioneering producer Max Tundra. Dismantling, reconfiguring, and exaggerating the sonic tropes of pop music, Max Tundra's avant-garde and maximalist aesthetic - heard across a trio of albums in the 2000s - paved the way for the explosion of hyperpop and label-collectives like PC Music. Tundra's playful commitment to piling sounds together began with what he describes as the "queasily irritating collection" of answerphone messages created for his parent's home phone in the 1980s (unsuspecting callers would be met with a barrage of samples, songs, silly noises and even a compelling story about an avocado stone.) And in the 2000s, carting "from house to house" the Commodore Amiga home computer system bought with his bar mitzvah money, Max Tundra began releasing music that sought to be "genre-free", initially employing "an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink multi-instrumental approach" before exploring a more synthetic sound as the decade progressed. On the eve of the release of new remixes of those seminal albums, Max offers up a Late Junction mixtape full of impossible vocals and wild pop abandon, including the "woozy electronic joy" of Vegyn, a song he wrote for Daphne & Celeste's comeback, and the reeling experimentation of NNAMDÏ.

Rory Bremner looks back at 50 years of BBC Radio coverage of test match cricket in this country.
The programme has seen a rich variety of commentators, including the poetic elegance of John Arlott, the japes of Brian Johnston and the exuberance of Jonathan Agnew.
For some the atmosphere has resembled that of an elite club, but for thousands of others the experience has been as vivid a depiction of summer as the smell of cut grass.
Producer: Tom Alban
First broadcast ion BBC Radio 4 in May 2007 to mark the 50th anniversary of Test Match Special.
Matthew Sweet explores the dawning of the age of Black Aquarius - the weirdly great wave of occultism that swept through British popular culture in the 1960s-70s. From journals like the Aquarian Arrow to the diabolical novels of Dennis Wheatley, lurid accounts of satanic cults in the Sunday papers and the glut of illustrated books, part-magazines, documentary film and TV drama, it was a wildly exuberant seam of British pop culture.
Flowering from the more arcane parts of the hippy movement but mutating into something quite different, why was there such a huge crossover appeal for the British public? Was this a continuation of the Sixties cultural battleground of restrictive morality being secretly titillated, or was it something else - something darker? These questions certainly puzzled factual television at the time.
The age of Black Aquarius matched the late Victorian craze for the occult in its intensity and popularity, and certainly drew from some of that era's obsessions - dark dimensions, secret rites, unearthly energy – but filtered through 'the permissive society', through a hugely eclectic counterculture, swinging sexual liberation and new kinds of consumption and lifestyle. And while dark forces were summoned in the grooviest of Chelsea flats they were being unearthed in the countryside too, a fantasy of pagan ritual and wicker men, of tight-lipped locals and blood sacrifice at harvest time.
Contributors include Mark Gatiss, Katy Manning, Caroline Munro, Kim Newman, Highgate Vampire hunter David Farrant and Piers Haggard, director of ‘The Blood on Satan’s Claw’.

June 1972 saw the release of David Bowie's album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which propelled the South London singer to stardom.
Bowie's creation of the Ziggy Stardust persona was more than just a whimsical costume change, the whole concept had a meticulously planned gestation period and evolved many facets of his creativity.
In a Melody Maker interview in January 1972, a few months before the album's release, Bowie openly discussed his bisexuality. Back then, it was a radical and potentially career harming gesture, but it became a defining moment for many gay people around the world.
In this Archive on 4, Tris Penna, who worked alongside Bowie at EMI Records, assesses the origins of the album, artists Michael Weller and George Underwood discuss their schooldays and early friendship with Bowie, and Ziggy Stardust co-producer Ken Scott recalls the studio experience.
"Young dude" Wendy Kirby, record plugger Anya Wilson, and former music exec Laurence Myers remember their time with "Ziggy" and singer Marc Almond talks movingly about the profound impact of Ziggy on his life.
Singer and actor Toyah Wilcox talks about the creative inspiration Bowie has had for her since the age of 12, and brings the reviews of the time alive.
The programme also includes rare archive material including a lost Bowie interview (as Ziggy) recorded in the Top of the Pops dressing room, a 1972 press conference, and insightful reflections from former band members Mick Ronson and Trevor Bolder.
We also hear studio outtakes – as well as a lost BBC session version of the title song.
Producers: Tris Penna and Sue Clark Executive Producer: David Prest A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.
Political journalist Tom Barton recalls the rave that changed Britain, at Castlemorton Common in May 1992.
In the weeks leading up to Castlemorton, New Age Travellers had tried to establish small festivals in Gloucestershire and Somerset - but had been moved on by police at every turn.
Arriving in West Worcestershire, they parked up at Castlemorton with the intention, they claim, of gathering just a few hundred people.
But, to the horror and outrage of local people, between 20,000 and 30,000 people arrived, with many staying at the site for an entire week.
The law that was created in response to the gathering, Part V of the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, makes it a criminal offence to hold an unlicensed gathering playing any music that is "wholly or predominantly characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats."
The festival is now widely regarded as the tipping point in a culture war which saw many aspects of the Traveller lifestyle outlawed in the UK.

In this series, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has deep conversations with people who have made a significant contribution to public life about what they believe. How have the navigated their inner life alongside their public profile? What has been their moral 'touchstone' through the good times and the bad? How do they engage with faith and spirituality?
This week's guest is the author Stephen King. He's written more than 60 novels, hundreds of short stories, and has sold hundreds of millions of books worldwide. Described as the "King of Horror", he became a household name with novels such as Carrie, The Shining, and Misery. Those and countless others have been adapted for the big screen, including The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, providing some of the most captivating moments in cinema history.

Few people who grew up in the 1960s could not now hum you the tunes from:
The Persuaders, University Challenge, Panorama, Crossroads, Dave Allen At Large, The Avengers, The Onedin Line, Blue Peter, Department S, Top of the Form, Tomorrow's World, Grandstand, Dad's Army, The Saint, Sportsnight – the list goes on and on.
The 1970s gave us:
Fawlty Towers, Colditz, Mr & Mrs, The Two Ronnies, The Liver Birds, Are You Being Served, The Goodies, The Wombles, Blake's Seven, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em – and Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads, whose theme tune perfectly captured the affectionate nostalgia of the comedy.
The melodies became so iconic that those shows which survived into the 21st century – Coronation Street, Mastermind, Match of the Day – have never ditched the theme music familiar to generations of viewers. And we haven't even mentioned Doctor Who, whose pulsing theme generated by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1963 has since regenerated itself many times over, and inspired enough new music to provide a programme for an entire Prom.
Rich Morton acknowledges that his age defines his taste in themes, as in so many other things. As a composer of very plausible tunes for TV shows and films which never existed, he favours the thrilling, brassy action themes of the 1960s or the jaunty hipster tunes of the 1970s.
Yet his suspicion is that programme makers in the 1980s – perhaps as a result of squeezed budgets - stopped commissioning specially-written music and turned instead to cheaper alternatives, such as adapting instrumental extracts from pre-existing pop records.
Rich argues that, while there are still memorable themes around, far too many shows now have bland or generic music which would defy most people's attempts to hum it, let alone remember it in 50 years' time.
In an age when many viewers access TV shows from Netflix, iPlayer or YouTube, the need for an instantly-recognisable theme as a clarion call to gather round and watch no longer applies.
Rich sets out to ask what it was that made those old themes so memorable, but is it now a Mission Impossible? Have TV themes diminished in importance as an art form?
Featuring some of the great practitioners of classic TV themes - Tony Hatch and Alan Hawkshaw, and one of the most successful TV composers of today, Debbie Wiseman.
Producer: Paul Bajoria
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2015.
Rich's Top 20 TV Themes
As you can see, my selection is firmly rooted in the Golden Age of ITC. These are some of my personal favourites, all written and recorded in the 60s and 70s - but as a musician I'm aware that the work of some great composers is glaringly absent! For instance, Henry Mancini's brilliant compositions for Peter Gunn and Mr Lucky (American TV shows made before my time) both spring to mind as examples of TV theme writing at its very best.
