JOHN PEEL'S SHED (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 30th April 2022
In 2002, John Osborne won a competition on John Peel's late night show on BBC Radio 1.
His prize was a box of records that took him eight years to listen to.
This is John's ode to radio, those records and anyone who's ever sought solace in the wireless. It's a story about one man's love for radio - and how it allows you to escape into another world.
Based on John's book 'Radio Head', this is about what happened next: a show about the pleasure of having your own personal project. The story is about passion, obsession with music and about legacy; trying to do something special with such a rare, eclectic box of records - thanks to John Peel.
Producer: John Pocock
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2011.
DR HEPCAT AND THE HEPSTER'S DICTIONARY (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 5th April 2022
In 1938, the singer and band leader Cab Calloway became the first known African American to publish a book and call it a dictionary.
His book of jive talk, Cab Calloway's Hepster's Dictionary, translated some of the lively and inventive slang being used among musicians and entertainers in New York's Harlem, for a new audience of jazz fans who weren't yet 'hep to the jive'.
Poet Lemn Sissay finds out how Calloway, famous for his hit song Minnie the Moocher, came to write the dictionary, and how it became the official reference book of jive in the New York Public Library at a time when black people in America were still highly segregated from the white mainstream.
Lemn speaks to Cab Calloway's eldest daughter Camay Murphy who remembers Harlem in the 1930s and 40s, and Cab's grandson Christopher Calloway Brooks who is a bandleader himself.
Jive grew out of older African American vernaculars which had their roots in slave plantations in the 19th century. As people came up from the southern states to the northern cities to look for work, jive developed around the world of jazz music, entertainment and night life in Harlem. It was a private 'in the know' language, a form of protection and a way to get past the authorities, but it was also fun and incredibly creative.
Some words survive, like hip, chick, groovy, dig, cool and beat. Other jive terms may no longer be in use - like collar to comprehend, pounders for policemen, or a rug cutter for a good dancer - but the words of jive remain a revealing portrait of Harlem in its heyday.

THE ART OF RE-MASTERING (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 21st March 2022
Sara Mohr-Pietsch explores digital re-mastering:
Is it the art of restoring music to its original glory; or just another way of selling us music we already own?
The whole of the Beatles back catalogue was re-released in re-mastered form; a quick search of any record store or online shop will reveal that a large number of recordings have been re-mastered, from very old crackly recordings to very recent releases.
But what do the words 'digitally re-mastered' on a cd actually mean?
Sara visits London's iconic Abbey Road Studios to meet some of the engineers who re-master recordings there. She asks them and others from the music industry what re-mastering actually means. She learns that sometimes re-mastering can be as much about what to leave in as what to leave out. And is it an advantage to have the original artist involved in the process?
She also considers the consumer's point of view; we've already bought these recordings on vinyl and cd (and possibly cassette as well) so why do we need to buy them again? Can the average listener hear any difference between the original version of (for instance) a pop song from the 1960s and the re-mastered version?
Sara looks at the technology that is used to clean up very old recordings, where the music is often buried almost completely beneath noise and the sonic distortions caused by very primitive recording equipment.
Whatever your view is of the value of re-mastering, what is clear is that the re-mastering engineers Sara meets treat the work they do with great care and reverence - they are often uncovering moments in history.

A SOUND BRITISH ADVENTURE (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 16th March 2022
Passionate about electronic music - comedian Stewart Lee takes a remarkable musical journey.
After the Second World War, a small group of electronic pioneers began tinkering with their army surplus kit to create new sounds and music.
Tristram Cary started the first electronic music studio in Britain but, while France, Germany, Italy and the USA had lavishly funded research centres, British electronic music remained the preserve of boffins on a budget.
This make do and mend approach prevailed long after austerity Britain gave way to the swinging 60s.
Stewart talks to Peter Zinovieff who developed EMS synthesizers from a shed at the bottom of his garden in Putney. Paul McCartney of the Beatles put on his wellies to take a look.
Unsurprisingly, the electronic community in Britain was a small, intimate group. Daphne Oram devoted decades to developing a 'drawn sound' electronic composition system that never really quite worked.
Brian Hodgson reveals how experimental and electronic festivals were held in the 1960s, including The Million Volt Light and Sound Rave at which the Beatles' electronic piece Carnival Of Light had its only public airing.
Stewart also discovers how the BBC radiophonic workshop broke new musical ground with BBC TV's Doctor Who.
Experts in the history of electronic music, including author and musician Mark Ayers and Goldsmiths College lecturer in computer studies Dr Michael Grierson give the boffins' view and Portishead's Adrian Utley explains why the early forays in electronics are still relevant today.
Producer: John Sugar
A Sugar production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in August 2012.
KITCH! (320kbs-m4a/63mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 15th March 2022
June 1948. The Empire Windrush docks at Tilbury carrying 492 West Indian "citizens of the British Empire".
Newsreel footage captures forever the suited new arrivals waiting to alight. As the reporter introduces one young man as "their spokesman", a gently smiling Aldwyn Roberts sings a Calypso he wrote on the the voyage, 'London is the place for me, London, this lovely city...'
Aldwyn Roberts was aged 26 and already well known in Trinidad as Calypso star Lord Kitchener. He lived in England for almost 15 years, married a girl in Manchester, was celebrated by glamorous upper class English society and became the voice of a generation of Caribbean immigrants far from home.
Poet and musician Anthony Joseph also left Trinidad for London in his 20s and has always felt a powerful connection to Kitch. He spoke to him just once, when he saw Kitch standing alone for a moment at Carnival in Trinidad.
Kitchener died in 2000. Now Anthony Joseph tries to get to the heart of the man behind the famous footage.
Producer: Allegra McIlroy
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2015.
