Paul Is Dead

PAUL IS DEAD (320kbs-m4a/63mb/27mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 30th July 2021

In 1969, with The Beatles in financial and creative turmoil, a strange rumour swept the world. It began with a phone call to a US chat show - Paul McCartney had been killed in a road accident and replaced by the winner of a look-a-like competition, William Campbell an orphan from Edinburgh. And there were clues that could only be revealed by playing the Beatles records backwards.

It sounds unlikely, but millions of fans believed it.

We speak with the man who took that phone call, the hoaxer who developed the myth, and an expert on folklore who sees uncanny parallels with ancient myths about changelings and the darker side of fairies.

What does this odd tale tell us about The Beatles' place in our cultural history?

The programme includes out takes, clips from interviews and rarer versions of Beatles songs.

Produced by Matt Thompson
A Rockethouse production

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2014.

The Poet Laureate Has Gone To His Shed - JK Rowling

THE POET LAUREATE HAS GONE TO HIS SHED - JK ROWLING (320kbs-m4a/140mb/61mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 24th July 2021

Joanne Rowling, known as JK Rowling, is known globally for writing one of the best selling book series in history. Harry Potter and his classmates now have their firm place in the collective imagination of a generation of readers. She also writes crime fiction under the pen name Robert Galbraith.

In the shed, Jo Rowling discusses the joys and the pains of writing with fellow author Simon Armitage, explaining how she picked up a pen to start again after the huge success of her first series. She discusses myths and the truths that have grown up around the books, including the idea that she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while on a delayed train from Manchester to London.

Jo brings a very special 'show and tell' into the shed when she gives Simon the chance to dip into her very first notebooks, never before shown publicly, which she used to collect early ideas that might end up in a first Potter book, including the names of the pupils in Harry's class.

The seven-year period that followed saw the death of her mother, birth of her first child, divorce from her first husband, and relative poverty until the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was published in 1997. There were six further books in the series, of which the last was released in 2007. Since then, Jo has written several books for adult readers: The Casual Vacancy (2012) and - under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith - the crime-fiction Cormoran Strike series. She has lived a "rags to riches" life in which she progressed from living on benefits to being one of the best- selling writers of all time, giving away much of her earnings to charity.

The Poet Laureate Has Gone To His Shed - Johnny Marr

THE POET LAUREATE HAS GONE TO HIS SHED - JOHNNY MARR (320kbs-m4a/136mb/59mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 3rd July 2021

If the poets of the past sat in their garrets dipping their quills in ink and waiting for inspiration to strike, our current Poet Laureate Simon Armitage has a more mundane and domestic arrangement. From his wooden shed in the garden, surrounded on all sides by the Pennine Hills and the Pennine weather, this summer he's working on a set of haikus inspired by the landscape around him and the people who drop by.

Any distraction is welcome, even encouraged, to talk about poetry, creativity, music, art, sheds, sherry, music and the countryside.

To kick off the new series Johnny Marr, who first achieved fame as the guitarist and co-songwriter of The Smiths, takes the trip over the Pennines from Manchester to visit the shed, along with his new twelve-string guitar. In a conversation punctuated by snatches of Smiths songs, Johnny Marr talks about his life in music and gives the Poet Laureate, a huge fan of The Smiths, a private run-through of chord sequences from his back catalogue.

Producer Susan Roberts.

As a professional footballer he's the only Englishman to win the league titles in England, Spain, the US and France. He spent the bulk of his career as a midfielder for Manchester United, winning the Treble - Premiership, FA Cup and Champions League - in 1999, before moving to Real Madrid in 2003. He headed to the US to play for LA Galaxy in 2007, and ended his career at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013, retiring in May that year.

Born and raised in East London, the middle child of Ted and Sandra, David Beckham discovered football early and spent hours kicking a ball around at the local park with his father. At the age of seven, he played for his first team, Ridgeway Rovers, before coming to the attention of Manchester United while attending the Bobby Charlton Soccer School. He became a trainee with Manchester United in 1991, and progressed to make 265 first team appearances, winning the Premier League six times, the FA Cup twice and the UEFA Champions League once. He played for England from 1996 to 2009 and captained the side for six years.

He still lives in the village where he was born and he considers and analyses British culture from his very particular vantage point in south Yorkshire.

Desert Island Discs: Michael Holding

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: MICHAEL HOLDING (320kbs-m4a/80mb/35mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 12th September 2021

Michael Holding is a cricket commentator and former West Indies bowler. He's widely regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers in the history of international cricket. In July 2020 when rain stopped play during the television coverage of a Test Match, he gave an unscripted four minute monologue on institutional racism in sport and society in the wake of the death of George Floyd. His spontaneous eloquence won him widespread acclaim, including a Royal Television Society award.

Michael was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1954 and grew up playing Catchy Shubby, an informal and fast-moving form of cricket, in scrubland behind his parents' home. He made his debut for Jamaica aged 18. Two years later he played in his first Test match for the West Indies and went on to become part of a team that would make sporting history – not losing a single series for 15 years. Michael earned the nickname 'Whispering Death' for his long quiet run-up and extremely fast deliveries, and many cricket experts believe he bowled the greatest over in Test history – to the English batsman Geoffrey Boycott in 1981 in Barbados.

He retired from international cricket in 1987 and became a well-respected and straight-talking commentator on the game: he has said this is his last year in the commentary box and he plans to return to his home in the Cayman Islands.

SOUND OF CINEMA - 324. MIKE LEIGH'S MUSIC (320kbs-m4a/134mb/58mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 18th September 2021

Matthew Sweet is joined by director Mike Leigh to talk about his ideas about music for films and to look back on some of the scores for films such as the historical dramas 'Mr Turner', 'Peterloo' and 'Topsy-Turvy'. He first came to prominence with the Play for Today TV drama 'Nuts in May' in 1976, and for many years he was known for his improvised domestic dramas. He tells Matthew about his work with composers Andrew Dickson ('Naked', Mean Time' and 'High Hopes') and Gary Yershon ('Peterloo', 'Happy-Go-Lucky' and 'Another Year'). There's jazz from Marianne Jean-Baptiste ('Career Girls') and an excerpt from one of Rachel Portman's earliest scores ('Four Days in July'). And we hear Carl Davis's versions of Gilbert and Sullivan ('Topsy-Turvy').

Mike Leigh's work is celebrated by the BFI in October and November on the Southbank in London and at Home in Manchester, with the release of a new print of his 1993 classic 'Naked', and with the appearance of a new, revised version of 'Mike Leigh on Mike Leigh'.
