Here's The Thing - 10. Mickey Rourke/John Turturro/Viggo Mortensen

HERE'S THE THING - 10. MICKEY ROURKE/JOHN TURTURRO/VIGGO MORTENSEN (320kbs-m4a/131mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 26th April 2021

Alec Baldwin delves into the lives of three celebrated actors, Mickey Rourke, John Turturro and Viggo Mortensen.

Award-winning actor Alec Baldwin gives the listener unique entrée into the lives of artists, policy makers and performers. Alec sidesteps the predictable by taking listeners inside the dressing rooms, apartments, and offices.

Mickey Rourke talks about how he was trying to make it as a boxer when he decided that acting might let him make a buck without getting beat up.

Child of an Italian father and a second-generation Sicilian in Queens, John Turturro was expected to achieve middle-class success, but fell deep in love with acting as both a craft and a field of study.

Viggo Mortensen had a highly eccentric childhood, moving as a young boy with his Danish father to South America where his father managed chicken farms. After his parents divorced, he moved with his mother to upstate New York, and after college drove a truck and sold flowers on the street, before trying acting. It was just one more odd job, at first.

Here's the Thing has its roots in public radio. In 2009, Alec joined with producers Lu Olkowski, Trey Kay, Kathie Russo, and Emily Botein to find fresh ways to engage in conversation on the radio. The group developed the idea of a new show that at its heart would look at what makes interesting people tick and create a platform for new and emerging ideas to be presented.

From WNYC Studios, New York.

English singer-songwriter Joe Jackson talks to Alec Baldwin about the evolution of his singing voice, the reason he won't watch the Grammys, and the British pop bands he actually likes.

HERE'S THE THING - 8. PAUL SIMON (320kbs-m4a/111mb/49mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 12th April 2021

Alec Baldwin delves into the life of the singer-songwriter, Paul Simon, from middle-class Jewish roots to global megastardom.

Paul Simon is one of the great American entertainers, a mantle he's worn since he started singing harmony with grade-school friend Art Garfunkel in a duo called Tom & Jerry. In the following six decades, Simon wrote dozens of classic songs. His partnership produced numerous hits like "The Sound of Silence," "America," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

Simon's solo career has been equally fruitful, as an engine of eclectic pop music (the gospel of "Loves Me Like a Rock," or the imported reggae of "Mother and Child Reunion"), and also as an ambassador of global sounds (the 1986 album Graceland, and 1990's The Rhythm of the Saints). He talks to Alec about how he has and hasn't changed after all these years.

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 5th April 2021

Alec Baldwin explores the lives of the actress, Sarah Jessica Parker, and New York's Studio 54 nightclub founder, Ian Schrager.

Award-winning actor Alec Baldwin gives the listener unique entrée into the lives of artists, policy makers and performers. Alec sidesteps the predictable by taking listeners inside the dressing rooms, apartments, and offices.

Here's The Thing - 5. Lena Dunham/Elaine Stritch

HERE'S THE THING - 5. LENA DUNHAM/ELAINE STRITCH (320kbs-m4a/123mb/54mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 5th March 2020

More in depth interviews from WNYC Radio in New York hosted by Alec Baldwin.

Alec Baldwin offers a unique insight into the lives of artists, policy makers and performers, sidestepping the predictable by taking listeners inside the dressing rooms, apartments, and offices.

Concluding the series specially curated for BBC Radio 4 Extra, Alec talks with two female stars that have comedy at the heart of what they do so well.

In 2013, Alec talked to Lena Dunham, the creator of HBO’s Girls. Says when she was younger, she thought she’d be a "Gender and Women’s Studies teacher who showed movies at the occasional film festival." Instead she's trying to figure out what to wear to shoot the cover of Rolling Stone. Dunham talks with Alec about getting a dog and her first date with her boyfriend Jack Antonoff. She’s not ready for children—yet—but they are on her mind: “I was raised to think that the two most important things you could do in your life were to have a passionate, generous relationship to your work and to raise children.”

Also in 2013, Alec sat down with the late stage and screen veteran Elaine Stritch, who, among many famous roles, played his mother Colleen Donaghy on 30 Rock. Stritch spoke to Alec about her transition from the Sacred Heart Convent and finishing school to finding herself in the New York theater classes sitting between Walter Matthau and Marlon Brando. She performed for nearly 70 years and throughout her career, Stritch comments, "I was the funny kind of offbeat girl. I was never the romantic lead.”

HERE'S THE THING - 4. AMY SCHUMER/CAROL BURNETT (320kbs-m4a/124mb/54mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 27th February 2020

More in depth interviews from WNYC Radio in New York hosted by Alec Baldwin.

Alec Baldwin gives the listener a unique insight into the lives of artists, policy makers and performers, sidestepping the predictable by taking listeners inside the dressing rooms, apartments, and offices.

Specially curated for BBC Radio 4 Extra, the series continues with Alec talking with two female stars with comedy at the heart of what they do so well.

In 2015 Alec talked to Amy Schumer, as her meteoric rise in comedy gathered pace, with hits that year including the hilarious and transgressive Comedy Central television show "Inside Amy Schumer;" and the feature film "Trainwreck" (written by Schumer); Amy talks to Alec about growing up on Long Island, playing the worst person ever, and the Pilates class they shared a decade ago.

In the same year Alec met another trailblazing comedy star. Carol Burnett's stage and screen career is one of the great showbiz success stories. From her early days on Broadway, to the 11-season run of The Carol Burnett Show, to her luminous big-screen turn as Miss Hannigan in Annie, Burnett's numerous Emmy and Golden Globe awards and nominations speak to her plasticity, her genius - and her hilarity. Carol talks to Alec about her life in the limelight.

Here's The Thing - 3. David Letterman/Michael Douglas

HERE'S THE THING - 3. DAVID LETTERMAN/MICHAEL DOUGLAS (320kbs-m4a/122mb/53mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 20th February 2020

More in depth interviews from WNYC Radio in New York hosted by Alec Baldwin.

Alec gives the listener a unique insight into the lives of artists, policy makers and performers, sidestepping the predictable by taking listeners inside the dressing rooms, apartments, and offices.

Specially curated for BBC Radio 4 Extra, the series continues with Alec talking to a legendary US TV interviewer, and a member of a Hollywood dynasty.

David Letterman began his Late Night gig as a self-described “gap-toothed, unknown smart ass.” He began his television career as a weatherman, but moved rapidly up to anchorman and talk show host. He left for L.A. and, after only three years on the comedy scene there, he found himself guest-hosting the Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. He got his own show in 1982, where he developed his off the cuff comedy style, often featuring ludicrous live challenges to the studio audience and members of the public, his “10 Ten Lists”, as well as interviewing the famous and not so famous. In 2012 he spoke to Alec about how a quintuple by-pass and the birth of a child have dramatically shifted his priorities.

David Letterman retired from his TV show in 2015.

In 2011 Alec spoke with a Hollywood star who’d lived in the same apartment overlooking New York’s Central Park for decades. Michael Douglas talks about what makes a great director and why playing the villain is so wonderful. Douglas reveals how competition with his father, legendary actor Kirk Douglas (103 in December 2019), shaped both his career and his life as a parent. He talks about his marriage to another acting star, Catherine Zeta Jones, and being much more honest with his young daughter than he ever thought he’d be. Douglas explains how his father’s early brush with death, and his own cancer diagnosis affected them each in different ways.

HERE'S THE THING - 2. DEBBIE REYNOLDS/ROBERT OSBORNE (320kbs-m4a/124mb/54mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 13th February 2020

Alec Baldwin explores "The Golden Age of Hollywood" with the Hollywood star, Debbie Reynolds and Hollywood film historian, Robert Osborne.

Alec talks with Debbie Reynolds about "Singin’ in the Rain" – her co-stars, the rehearsal process, the whirlwind of excitement the movie generated. Debbie describes the slow death of the studio system. "Everything was done for us, the makeup, the hair. They'd send cars for us. We were very spoiled. We didn't know what to do when they dropped everybody when television came." Debbie talks frankly about her relationships with men and money.

Alec also visits film historian and host of Turner Classic Movies, Robert Osborne. Osborne details the unlikely adventure in Hollywood that led him to his current profession as the ambassador of a bygone film era. Lucille Ball, Bette Davis, and Olivia de Havilland all play supporting roles in the story of his life.

First heard in the USA in 2014.

Debbie Reynolds died in 2016, aged 84. Robert Osborne died in 2017, also aged 84.

Here's The Thing - 1. Jerry Seinfeld

HERE'S THE THING - 1. JERRY SEINFELD (320kbs-m4a/121mb/52mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 6th February 2020

Alec Baldwin sits down with comedian Jerry Seinfeld who debuted on HBO in 1981, going on to star in the global comedy hit series, Seinfeld.

Award-winning actor Alec Baldwin gives the listener unique entrée into the lives of artists, policy makers and performers. Alec sidesteps the predictable by taking listeners inside the dressing rooms, apartments, and offices.

Jerry Seinfeld was just 27 when he first appeared on Johnny Carson in 1981. And he stood out. His material wasn't about his upbringing or personal relationships. It was about our universal experience of small things. His unique comedy style eventually led him to create his namesake show with Larry David. After Seinfeld ran for nine seasons, he decided to go back to stand-up, and to his audience. As he explains to Alec, Seinfeld feels uniquely connected to his fans: “You have this relationship with the audience that is private between you and them.”

Houses Of Horror

HOUSES OF HORROR (320kbs-m4a/65mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 23rd February 2021

It's almost a given that the story of British horror movies belongs to Hammer films. The studio, with its lurid combination of sex and death, lashings of blood and gore, has given it a special stake in British hearts. It made over 200 films such as Dracula and Curse of Frankenstein with a recurring, legendary cast, including Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, and its 2007 revival drew heavily on past mystique.

Hammer was the most successful British film company of all time but, throughout its heyday in the 60s and 70s, it did battle with a much smaller, poorer, creative, upstart rival - Amicus films. Amicus was a small British horror studio that pioneered the much loved 'portmanteau' picture, such as Tales From the Crypt and Vault of Horror – each movie a composite of four or five short stories, whose connection is revealed at the end.

Horror aficionado and film buff Matthew Sweet explores the productive rivalry between the two contenders for the heart and soul of British horror, in a blood-curdling tale of low budget, gore spattered one-upmanship that's full of chilling atmosphere and fun.

Great Lives - Caroline Catz On Delia Derbyshire

GREAT LIVES - CAROLINE CATZ ON DELIA DERBYSHIRE (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 19th January 2021

The actor Caroline Catz chooses Delia Derbyshire, the musician and composer who is best known for her work at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop where she realised the theme tune to Doctor Who. With Dr David Butler from the University of Manchester who looks after Delia's archive.

Delia was born in Coventry in 1937 and describes her earliest recollections of sound as the sound of the German blitz and the air-raid sirens. She studied music and maths at Cambridge and joined the BBC Radiophonic Workshop where she could create sounds that had never existed in the world before. Her 'realisation' of Ron Grainer's theme tune to Doctor Who brought both her and the Workshop to greater prominence, but she later left the BBC and London and moved to Cumbria where she worked on a series of projects, as well as being briefly employed as a radio operator at the Gas Board. She was a pioneer of sound and her work is celebrated each year by Delia Derbyshire Day. Caroline was terrified by the Doctor Who theme tune as a child but fascinated by the woman, and later discovered tracks like 'Ziwzih Ziwzih OO-OO-OO' and 'Blue Veils and Golden Sands' from Radiophonic Workshop mix tapes. The discovery of 267 tapes in Delia's attic provided another portal into the extraordinary sonic world of Psyche-Delia and the mystery surrounding both how she created her music and the choices she made in life provided the inspiration for Caroline's film 'Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes' in which she plays the lead. Delia appears in archive recordings to give Matthew Parris his first taste of a Wobbulator.

Spellbound: Siouxsie And The Banshees

SPELLBOUND: SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES (320kbs-m4a/63mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 5th April 2021

As the bright white heat of punk faded few bands survived and emerged from the aftermath, stronger and more unique than Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Led by the unmistakable force of Siouxsie Sioux and bassist Steven Severin, the Banshees carved a musical legacy that is without parallel.

Originally meeting as part of the 'Bromley Contingent' that gravitated around punk pioneers The Sex Pistols, Susan Janet Ballion met Steven Bailey at a Roxy Music concert at Wembley in 1975, bonding over suburban boredom, a love of Bowie, Hitchcock and 'Cabaret' style nocturnal fun.

Armed with a handful of ideas, suburban isolation, borrowed equipment, the duo entered the furnace of punk intent on smashing down the established musical order and sculpting a dark and alluring legacy.

Miranda Sawyer talks to Siouxsie about the legendary gig at the infamous 100 Club as well as her and Steven Severin's part in TV folklore by appearing on the Today show where the Sex Pistol's Steve Jones and John 'Rotten' Lydon' swore at presenter Bill Grundy revealing to the nation the filth and the fury of punk rock.

Through Banshee's biographer and fan Mark Paytress, journalist Alexis Petridis and acclaimed producer Nigel Gray, Sawyer unearths how the band quickly bolted from the fading spark of punk and carved out an unparalleled legacy of five albums in five years.

From 1978's stark, Velvet Underground inspired 'The Scream' through band fall-outs, commercial and critical success, to the neo-psychedelic, post punk of 'Kaleidoscope', the hugely influencial dark wave 'JuJu' and the quixotic, exotic and erotic and 'A Kiss in the Dreamhouse' this a unique insight into a genre and era defying band.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 2012.

Soul Music: Series 30 - 8. Life On Mars?

SOUL MUSIC: SERIES 30 - 8. LIFE ON MARS? (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 9th January 2021

Life on Mars? was released on David Bowie's Hunky Dory album in 1971. Two years later it came out as a single in its own right. Famous for its exploration of disillusionment and alienation, there is no one single definitive story behind it. But that is perhaps the song's beauty and the secret behind its appeal - that its cryptic lyrics are open to interpretation, and can mean different things to different people.

Musicians and fans talk about what Life on Mars? means to them, and its lasting emotional impact, in this special programme remembering Bowie's birthday on January 8th 1947 and commemorating his death on January 10th 2016.

And what does the question mark in the song's title mean?

With contributions from:
Musician Dana Gillespie whose autobiography is Weren't Born A Man
Bowie author Chris O'Leary
Scientist Abigail Fraeman of NASA's Mars Mission

Soul Music: Series 30 - 7. Once In A Lifetime

SOUL MUSIC: SERIES 30 - 7. ONCE IN A LIFETIME (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 29th December 2020

Talking Heads emerged out of the post punk scene of the late 1970s. Once In A Lifetime is the iconic single taken from their album Remain In Light. With its looped synthesizer and Afrobeat inspired by Fela Kuti it seemed to pre-empt the consumerism and ennui of the 1980s. Writer Ian Gittins interviewed David Byrne and later wrote his book Once In A Lifetime. He says David Byrne had in mind people of a certain middle class existence who seemingly breeze through life with ease when he wrote the lyrics. They may get to middle age or reach a crisis point and ask "How did I get here?" For a song that invites us to question our lives it has a suprisingly emotional core that encourages people to be grateful and make positive changes in their lives where necessary. For Glaswegian Gerry Murphy that meant becoming more present for his family after serious illness forced him to reconsider the amount of time he devoted to his career. He went on to write a book about his experience - And You May Find Yourself: A Guided Practice To Never Fearing Death Again.

Ian Peddie was inspired by the song to leave his dead end existence in Wolverhampton in the mid 1980s to 'find himself in another part of the world' following his dreams. Kelly Waterhouse says the song symbolises gratitude for all the things she takes for granted and sometimes struggles with in her life as a busy working mother.
And singer Angelique Kidjo recorded her own version of Once In A Lifetime in 2018 after coming full circle with the song from her arrival in Paris in 1983 after fleeing the dictatorship in her home country of Benin. She heard the song at a student party and recognised the Afrobeats adopted by David Byrne and Brian Eno that made her feel both joyful and homesick at the same time.

Soul Music: Series 30 - 5. Lean On Me

SOUL MUSIC: SERIES 30 - 5. LEAN ON ME (320kbs-m4a/63mb/27mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 8th December 2020

An enduring classic which delivers a message of support and friendship. Never more so than in 2020 when it's been the musical backdrop to the Covid crisis in the UK, and at Black Lives Matter protests in the US.

Taking part:

Andy Greene, a senior writer at Rolling Stone magazine, tells the remarkable life-story of Bill Withers.

Composer, Neil Brand, explains how the simplicity of this track is what enables it to pack such a strong emotional punch.

Sara Morrell is a nurse whose version of Lean On Me, recorded quickly at home as a way of cheering-up colleagues, caught the attention of some big names in the music industry.

Sharmila Bousa organised a community flash-mob to show support to her local shops in Westbury-on-Trym which had suffered a spate of armed-robberies.

Arianna Evans has become a voice of the Black Lives Matter protests. She recalls a powerful moment at one of the Washington DC rallies where local singer, Kenny Sway, sang Lean On Me creating a memorable and much-needed moment of joy and unity.

Thanks to: Ian DeMartino who recorded the speech given by Arianna Evans; Zaranyzerak who provided the recording of Kenny Sway's performance; and to Tristan Cork who filmed the Westbury-on-Trym flashmob for Bristol Live

Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Karen Gregor.
