Neil Gaiman - The Sleeper And The Spindle

NEIL GAIMAN - THE SLEEPER AND THE SPINDLE (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 26th December 2020

Neil Gaiman's perfect Christmas-time fairy tale, brought to life by award-winning dramatist Katie Hims. Starring Penelope Wilton, Gwendoline Christie and Ralph Ineson as well as Neil Gaiman himself.

The Sleeper and the Spindle is a new tale drawing on traditional folk stories, interweaving Snow White and Sleeping Beauty in an enchanting drama that puts the women firmly centre stage.

In her mountain kingdom, a soldier-Queen prepares for her wedding day. Three dwarves, guardians from her childhood, race towards her. They were coming for the celebration, but they also bring news of a sleeping sickness sweeping the land. As a girl she survived her own long, magical sleep, so she throws on her armour, straps on her sword and rides into the heart of this new plague to try to find its source and save her people. The magical sleep is spreading from a castle deep in the forest. There, our heroine discovers a beautiful sleeping girl, and a very, very old woman, forever awake... But when the Queen wakes the princess in the traditional way, she discovers that all is not as it seems. Ultimately, she comes to understand that she really can make her own choices, and follow the path to her own happy ending.

Graham Greene - The Honorary Consul

GRAHAM GREENE - THE HONORARY CONSUL (320kbs-m4a/261mb/1hr53mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 12th & 13th October 2020

In a conversation with Nicholas Shakespeare, Graham Greene once named 'The Honorary Consul' as his favourite among all his novels, "...because the characters change and that is very difficult to do."

In this superbly tense story of political kidnap and sexual betrayal set at the beginning of Argentina's Dirty War in early 1970s, Greene's characters find themselves on a switchback ride of love, sacrifice and violence.

Isolated Dr Eduardo Plarr, son of a missing political prisoner, is lured into collaborating with a defrocked priest in a kidnap plot, only to find the lives of two people he doesn't care for, suddenly in his hands.

Meanwhile Charles Fortnum, the elderly and drunken Honorary Consul in a one-horse town near the Paraguayan border, faces his own terrors, and the loss of the young prostitute he has fallen in love with.

Greene added: "For me the sinner and the saint can meet; there is no discontinuity, no rupture... The basic element I admire in Christianity is its sense of moral failure. That is its very foundation. For once you're conscious of personal failure, then perhaps in future you become a little less fallible. In 'The Honorary Consul' I did suggest this idea, through the guerrilla priest, that God and the devil were actually one and the same person – God had a day-time and a night-time face, but that He evolved, as Christ tended to prove, towards His day-time face – absolute goodness – thanks to each positive act of men."

Dramatised by Nick Warburton.

Produced and directed by Jonquil Panting

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January/February 2016.

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 21st & 22nd April 2020

Graham Greene's masterful tale of suspense was written at the same time as his masterpiece The Power and The Glory.

It was written in six weeks in 1938 as England stood on the brink of war, and the story is suffused with paranoia, distrust and urgency. He wrote it as an 'Entertainment' with the hope of getting a film made of the book and therefore providing much needed income for his family, in which he succeeded.

It's a tense thriller where the hero must avoid trap after trap that is set for him haunted by the memory of his dead wife and his own time in prison awaiting execution.

Rudy's Rare Records is a tiny down at heel old reggae record shop in Birmingham - one of a dying breed; a place with real soul, stacked with piles of vinyl, where the slogan is "if we don't have it - them don't mek it". It's owned by the charismatic, irrepressible Rudy Sharpe (Larrington Walker), reluctantly helped out by his long-suffering neurotic son Adam (Lenny Henry) and Handsworth's first, black, surly girly goth, Tasha (Natasha Godfrey). Rudy has recently married his long-term love interest Doreen (Claire Benedict) who is enjoying the challenge of getting the Sharpe men in shape - until she is shaken by a mugging, which is leaving his best friend Clifton (Jeffery Kissoon) feeling left out - that is until Rudy's sister Miss Reenie comes to stay.

Archive On 4: Close To The Edit

ARCHIVE ON 4: CLOSE TO THE EDIT (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 13th April 2021

Filmmaker Mike Figgis explores the story of edited film, audio and culture, and how the simple process of cutting and splicing has changed the way people view the world.

We are living in an age of the edit.

From the jump-cuts of Eisenstein and Hitchcock, to the fractured narratives of Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, from the cut-and-paste sounds of musique concrete and hip-hop, to the sensibility of social media (to say nothing of the radio feature itself), it's the edit - the cut, the splice; montage and juxtaposition - that has ushered us into the present. To some, it's the stuff of life itself: chimps, for example, share 99% of our DNA; what matters is the sequencing, the edit.

There's a year zero to this story of the edit. From the moment we get up in the morning until we close our eyes at night, the visual reality we perceive is a continuous stream of apparently linked images. That's the way we experienced the world for millennia. Then suddenly, just over a century ago, human beings were confronted with something else: edited film.

But this isn't an exercise in cinema history. It's about our present culture. A culture in which the invisible mediating hand of the editor is ever-present. A culture of the 'creative commons' in which we can pull anything out of context and re-edit it (a gif, an internet meme, a mash-up, a parody of a political speech) and make the edit itself become an art form. Cutting, splicing, sampling -- it's all part of the way the world functions now. This is just the beginning.

With Vicki Bennett aka People Like Us, Margie Borschke, Walter Murch and Will Self.

Producer: Martin Williams.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2017.

Archive On 4: Femmes Fatales

ARCHIVE ON 4: FEMMES FATALES (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 26th January 2021

Recorded on location in Manhattan, screen siren Kathleen Turner celebrates the enduring mystique of the femme fatale.

Turner, who famously played the husky-voiced femme fatale Matty Walker in the steamy thriller Body Heat, traces the history of the Femme Fatale in cinema and in film noir where she was so often a central character.

Film noir always come to the fore during moments of deep cultural anxiety. And the character of the femme fatale shines a revealing light on the role of women in society and the relationship between the sexes.

It was towards the end of the Second World War that noir first emerged as a style of filmmaking. These were gritty thrillers that exposed the dark underbelly of the American Dream. In films such as Double Indemnity, Out Of The Past and The Postman Always Rings Twice, the femme fatale was the intelligent but heartless seductress who entrapped the male protagonist, for her own murderous and financial gain.

In the late 70s and early 80s, America experienced another moment of deep cynicism following the Vietnam war and filmmakers returned to film noir, with Kathleen Turner's Matty Walker as the ultimate neo noir femme fatale character in Body Heat. These films, not content with the racy innuendo of 1940s noir, shocked and thrilled audiences with explicit sex scenes. But through her typical tough dame talk, Matty Walker also draws attention to the underestimation of women by men.

With contributions from Eddie Muller (President of the Film Noir Foundation), Professor Ellis Cashmore and Nick James (Editor of the BFI's Sight and Sound magazine), Kathleen introduces standout performances from Lauren Bacall, Barbara Stanwyck, Rita Hayworth, Joan Crawford and Lana Turner.

The film noir femme fatale was a wonderfully meaty role for an up-and-coming Hollywood actress, such as British star Peggy Cummins. Now 91, she reflects on her role as the femme fatale in Joseph H. Lewis' Gun Crazy about an ambitious fairground sharp-shooter who goes on a bank robbing spree with her trigger-happy husband.

Julie Grossman (author of Rethinking The Femme Fatale in Film Noir) argues that we make blithe and easy reference to femmes fatales without considering their social and psychological context. Many 1940s femmes fatales in film noir were deeply interesting characters who felt trapped, bored or led deeply unfulfilling lives.

Kathleen argues that, despite great advances in gender equality since the 1940s, the femme fatale will always be relevant "because men will always be terrified of women."

Sounds Of A City: New Order - Power, Corruption And Lies

SOUNDS OF A CITY: NEW ORDER - POWER, CORRUPTION AND LIES (320kbs-m4a/133mb/58mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 23rd December 2020

Colleen Murphy lifts the lid on New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies and its relationship to Manchester.

Speaking to the likes of Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Peter Saville, we breakdown the components of an album that fused punk and dance, art and experimentation, technology and rock, to create something for a new generation of tech-savvy music-philes to get their teeth into. A Certain Ratio's Martin Moscrop and The Charlatan's Tim Burgess discuss this perfect blending, whilst 808 State's Graham Massey contemplates the fact that Manchester has more in common with New York than it does with any other British city. A story that may sound familiar, but with New Order were stepping out from the shadows of Joy Division the idea of experimentation is amplified and braver, and may not have even worked. And then there was that album cover.

Sounds Of A City: The Human League - Travelogue

SOUNDS OF A CITY: THE HUMAN LEAGUE - TRAVELOGUE (320kbs-m4a/129mb/56mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 23rd December 2020

Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, founder of Classic Album Sundays, looks deep into The Human's League's Travelogue album, and the city from which it was built, Sheffield.

Talking to lead member Martyn Ware, she delves into what made this album such a pivotal moment in the landscape of Sheffield's music scene, and why synths unlocked an entire universe for musicians. From the heavy industry, poverty, and even the space race, everything that went into this album came out the other side to inspire a new generation of musicians, inadvertently starting a dance music revolution in the City. Cabaret Voltaire's Richard H. Kirk discusses the album's pop values, whilst our very own Jarvis Cocker give us his own unique take on the tracks and their links to Sheffield. From Roisin Murphy and Toddla T to Orbital's Paul Hartnoll, the album and the City's influence has been felt far and wide, so tune in to this exploration of one of pop's darkest moments.
