'Electric News' - The World's First Radio Station
'ELECTRIC NEWS' - THE WORLD'S FIRST RADIO STATION (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 14th October 2019
We often think of the scheduled broadcasting of news, information and entertainment as having begun in the 1920s. But we're wrong. It was in 1893 in Budapest that Theodore Puskas opened his Telefon Hirmondo or 'Telephone Newspaper'.
Subscribers to this telephone service could enjoy a daily timetable of foreign, national and local news, sport, weather, fashion, stockmarket reports, language lessons, music, theatre and much more. It was delivered by a team of journalists, copy-writers, editors, announcers and engineers which would be familiar to any radio station today. To our ears, Telefon Hirmondo would have sounded uncannily modern. For example, there would be live relays of church services, theatre productions, concerts and opera performances and reports direct from parliament and sports events.
Laurie Taylor travels to Budapest to uncover this extraordinary story of 'radio before radio'. He visits a special exhibition at the city's postal museum and takes a look inside Hungarian State Opera, whose performances were broadcast live via Telefon Hirmondo from the 1890s.
Laurie explores the lengths to which Telefon Hirmondo went to market its product, hooking in not just domestic subscribers but hotels, restaurants, clubs, dental surgeries and barber shops. He also delves into the telephone's early history to explain the confusion on both sides of the Atlantic over what the device was best used for.
How did Hungary come to lead the world in broadcasting, rather than the USA, Britain or France? The genius of Theodore Puskas is a large part of the explanation. Among the contributors, we hear from his descendant, Barbara Fally-Puskas.

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 28th September 2019
Another chance to hear an intimate portrait of the enigmatic artist in her own words from interviews recorded across her career.
Hailed as the world’s best songwriter by Rolling Stone magazine on the release of her first album, Dry, in 1992, PJ Harvey is the only artist to have won the Mercury Music prize twice.
But the Dorset-based musician has long maintained an aura of mystery around her work, preferring to let her music and art do the talking, and comparatively little is known about her personal life.
From her formative years growing up on a farm listening to blues, meeting her lifelong friend and collaborator John Parish, sharing her love of Captain Beefheart with John Peel, to the writing processes and inspirations behind her songs, 6 Music offers a rare glimpse into the PJ Harvey’s world.

Archive On 4: The Selling Of Sinatra
ARCHIVE ON 4: THE SELLING OF SINATRA (320kbs-m4a/130mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 19th October 2019
Jazz singer Kurt Elling provides a unique take on Frank Sinatra, playing with the glitz and glamour, and discovering the dark undertones to a crooner's life that we thought we knew. In a centenary celebration, he analyses just how much image-making and effort went into turning Francis Albert Sinatra into plain old "Frank."
Sinatra had many incarnations in a sixty-year career. He was born to a working-class Italian immigrant family in New Jersey. His father was a lightweight boxer, bar owner and firefighter. His mother Natalina was active in Democratic politics and ran an illegal abortion clinic. Frank dropped out of high school and began singing at his dad's bar, eventually gaining the attention of bandleader Tommy Dorsey.
With Tommy's help, Sinatra’s popularity grew in the 40s, but he didn't serve in the Second World War due to a perforated eardrum and he attracted some bitterness as magazine photographs displayed him surrounded by beautiful women and making plenty of cash in New York.
A decline in popularity and damage to his vocal chords led to the "wilderness years", suicide attempts and deep depression.
With the boost of an Oscar win in 1953, Frank successfully remade himself on an industrial scale with Las Vegas tours, Hollywood movies, platinum records, retirements, comebacks and high society connections that included the Oval Office.
Contributors include Robert Wagner, John Lahr and Paul Anka.
Producer: Colin McNulty

Archive On 4 - Judy Garland: The Final Rainbow
ARCHIVE ON 4 - JUDY GARLAND: THE FINAL RAINBOW (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 5th October 2019
Renée Zellweger introduces a programme exploring Judy Garland's last concerts at London's the Talk of The Town in 1969 - the subject of a new feature film.
Weaving together newly restored archive recordings and eye-witness accounts, we separate the woman from the myth, examine her exceptional talent, exploitation and troubled relationship with Hollywood.
Judy Garland was one of the 20th century's greatest entertainers. A living legend. But in late December 1968, embattled and in poor health, she arrived in London for a five week run at the Talk of The Town in Leicester Square, for £2,500 a week. London was her place of sanctuary, she had performed spectacular comeback concerts in the city in 1951, 1957, 1960 and 1964.
When Renée Zellweger was preparing to play Judy in a new biopic, directed by Rupert Goold, little-heard archive concert recordings and first hand accounts were key to understanding the singer's state of mind during those final performances. Judy Garland died of an accidental overdose in her Chelsea home six months later, aged 47.
Rosalyn Wilder was the young production assistant tasked with getting Judy on stage each night at the Talk of The Town. Looking back now, Rosalyn describes the stress of that responsibility, but she is also deeply sympathetic - it was clear Judy's personal life had spiralled out of control. Michael Hirst, the venue's general manager, also remembers Garland's 5 week engagement for its unpredictability.
For jazz pianist Dave Lee, now 93, his experiences working with Judy couldn't be more different. Starting in 1960, he worked with her over a six year period. The Judy Garland he encountered was bouncy, happy and fun - but with an incredible talent for picking the wrong men.
We also hear from Judy director Rupert Goold, New York composer Johnny Meyer who gave Garland shelter in the summer of 1968, film critic David Benedict, and audio engineer John Haley who has restored many rare Judy Garland recordings.

You're Entering Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone
YOU'RE ENTERING ROD SERLING’S THE TWILIGHT ZONE (320kbs-m4a/407mb/2hrs57mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 28th September 2019
October 1959, America was deep into the 'age of unease' as viewers took their first steps into 'another dimension, not only of sight & sound but of mind.' Their 'next stop, The Twilight Zone.'
Through these doors of perception they have forever dwelled in stories of pixelated shadow and substance. A black & white realm presided over by a neat little man in a sharp suit whose perpetual cigarette smoke forever curls upwards as he ushers you into his realm. The aliens are among us and due on Maple Street but maybe we are the monsters? Are we on earth & is it dying? Where is everybody? Why are they vanishing & is that death hitching a ride or knocking at my door looking uncannily like Robert Redford. And why is Captain Kirk screaming at that thing on the wing that no one else can see?!
Rod Serling, America's most famous television playwright, astonished people with his announcement that he was to explore the realms of science fiction and fantasy in a new anthology show. Like Dennis Potter starting up Dr Who. But Serling, an impeccable liberal haunted by war, racial strife & the possibilities of nuclear Armageddon smuggled stories of conscience, doubt and possibility into five seasons of a remarkable show that has never died & has been revisited for a fourth time with Jordan Peele as host. In truth, nothing can match a realm of the American weird that Serling made uniquely his own.
In this special Radio 4 Extra documentary Alan Dein hears from Serling's family, veteran directors Richard Donner & John Frankenheimer, actors Earl Holliman (star of the first ever episode) & Jean Marsh as well as the writers Jonathan Lethem & David Thomson & Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker. Two Twilight Zone radio episodes accompany the documentary.

Graham Massey - Mary Anne Hobbs Mix
GRAHAM MASSEY - MARY ANNE HOBBS MIX 27.09.19 (320kbs-m4a/53mb/23mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 27th September 2019
Kick start your weekend with a special guest mix from Graham Massey. Every Friday we invite our favourite DJs to take charge of the 6 Music Decks and this week it's Graham's turn.
Graham is perhaps best known as a founding member of acid-house pioneers, 808 State, alongside Andrew Barker. The legendary outfit recently announced a new studio album, 'Transmission Suite', which arrives 17 years on from their last release, 2002's Outpost Transmission.
Since 'Outpost Transmission', Graham and Andrew have continued to play live and have just announced an appearance at Manchester's Warehouse Project, alongside Bicep on the 30th of November. However, it wasn’t until last year that the duo decided to reconvene with a view to working on a significant new body of material, with Graham saying of the release: “We’re trying to make a future for other people to immerse themselves in.....It feels a bit like an imaginary landscape. That’s always been a big part of 808 State, when you go back through the music: these kind of landscapes of futurism.”
Stevie Wonder - You Haven't Done Nothin'
Barry Gray - UFO End Credits
Marvin Gaye - God Is Love
A Guy Called Gerald - Born In The North-US
808 State - Spiral Arms
Ryuichi Sakamoto - Riot In Lagos
