Bob Dylan: Changing Times - 6. 1989: Oh Mercy
BOB DYLAN: CHANGING TIMES - 6. 1989: OH MERCY (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 21st December 2016
John Wilson continues to explore Bob Dylan's career at the end of three decades - 1969, 1979 and 1989 - and, with the help of those who have worked with and written about the enigmatic star, assesses the ways in which he re-invented himself at those times.
Tonight John looks back at 1989 and the album Oh Mercy, which was seen as a comeback and was the first album Dylan had written entirely himself for four years. Recorded in an imposing house in New Orleans and produced by Daniel Lanois (who had been recommended to Dylan by Bono), it was a return to form.
Dylan also stepped up his touring schedule, clocking up ninety nine concerts - an average he has kept up more or less every year since then on what he described as his 'never-ending' tour.
First broadcast on 6 Music in 2009.

BOB DYLAN: CHANGING TIMES - 4. 1979: SLOW TRAIN COMING (320kbs-m4a/65mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 16th December 2016
John Wilson looks back to 1979 when once again Bob Dylan marked the end of a decade by making some major changes in his life and career. He embraced Christianity, spent several months in Bible School and recorded a Gospel album, Slow Train Coming. When he tried to evangelize Jerry Wexler in the studio, the wily producer replied 'Bob, you're dealing with a sixty-two-year-old confirmed Jewish atheist. I'm hopeless. Let's just make an album'.
To the frustration of some of his fans, subsequent concerts were all-Gospel events. Dylan refused to play any of his old material, tended to give sermons between songs - even dismissing hecklers who demanded rock-n-roll with the words. 'You wanna rock-n-roll you can go down and rock-n-roll. You can go see Kiss and you rock-n-roll all your way down to the pit.'.
First broadcast on 6 Music in 2009.

BOB DYLAN: CHANGING TIMES - 2. 1969: NASHVILLE SKYLINE (320kbs-m4a/65mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 14th December 2016
Another chance to hear a series assessing Bob Dylan's career at the end of three decades - 1969, 1979 and 1989 - and, with the help of those who have worked with and written about the enigmatic star, exploring the ways in which he re-invented himself at those times.
Part 1: 1969 - Nashville Skyline.
Having been out of the public eye for quite some time, Dylan returned with a new album, a new sound and new look in 1969. The album Nashville Skyline surprised many with its simple country-tinged songs. He appeared on Johnny Cash's TV show and chose to return to the concert stage not at Woodstock, but at the Isle of Wight Festival.
In this programme we hear from Judy Gascoyne, who was housekeeper for Bob and Sara Dylan while they stayed at a farm on the island to rehearse with The Band in a barn. Bob entertained his friends The Beatles at the farm and played tennis with them. We also hear from Dylan biographer Howard Sounes and musician and Dylan chronicler Sid Griffin as well as former England cricket captain Bob Willis, who added the name Dylan to his forenames and has seen Dylan live around fifty times.
First broadcast on 6 Music in 2009.

BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 28th June 2016
Another chance to hear Kris Kristofferson's profile of legendary singer songwriter Bob Dylan.
Kris begins the story of his hero, his inspiration and his friend Bob Dylan in the first of this six-part series.
It's 1961 and Bob moves from Minnesota to New York, hoping to perform there and to visit his idol Woody Guthrie. Soon, he becomes the most talked about artist on the Greenwich Village folk scene and begins to write the songs that came to define the 1960s such as Blowin' In The Wind and The Times They Are A-Changin'.
The programme features interviews with Dylan's contemporaries Tom Paxton, Jim Kweskin and Dave Van Ronk, who remember his earliest songs and performances. Plus John Hammond, the man who signed Bob to Columbia Records, recalls the making of the 21 year old's debut record. Also, Paul Simon admits the time was right for a folk revival and Joan Baez gives a rare insight into her contribution to Dylan's success.
Bob himself talks about the music that influenced him as a young man, first hearing Woody Guthrie, meeting Peter, Paul and Mary and walking out of the influential Ed Sullivan TV Show in 1963.
Featured tracks include Song To Woody from Dylan's 1962 eponymous debut, Blowin' In The Wind from his landmark follow up The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and title track from his third album The Times They Are A-Changin'.

Cornershop
CORNERSHOP (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 13th August 2019
In the early 1990s, the Anglo-Indian band, Cornershop, had had a couple of decent singles, but as a group they were rather ramshackle. Then in 1997, with the release of their album, When I was Born for the Seventh Time, they re-emerged with a different and refreshing sound.
Their British Asian fusion was raucously experimental; their attitude was spiky, smart and often hilarious. They'd created a masterpiece of cross cultural music which gave them a worldwide hit, Brimful of Asha.
The release prompted an excited music press to hail the album as a breakthrough in the integration of white and Asian music, and to predict an explosion in multi-cultural rock.
Musician Talvin Singh, and Rolling Stone music critic David Fricke join band members Ben Ayres and Tjinder Singh to explore how the album was made, the impact it had at the time, and whether its promise of musical integration has endured.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2013.

MUSIC EXTRA - CALIFORNIA DREAMIN': THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS (96kbs-m4a/35mb/50mins)
BBC World Service broadcast: 13th July 2019
From her home in LA, singer-songwriter Michelle Phillips tells the story of the group that made her famous, the Mamas and the Papas. It is 50 years since the quartet known for its cheery sound finally split up but their songs still endure to this day. In this programme, Michelle takes us back to the folk origins of the group which included Michelle and John Phillips, Denny Doherty and of course Cass Elliot (Mama Cass).
Combined with sharp songwriting and arrangements from John Phillips and musical contributions from some of Los Angeles' finest session musicians—especially drummer Hal Blaine, bassist Joe Osborne and keyboardist Larry Knechtel - the Mamas and the Papas created some of the most unforgettable songs of the '60s. California Dreamin', endures as an anthem of those heady times while they also had hits with, among others Monday, Monday and I Saw Her Again.
Michelle talks about their rise to fame, the inspiration for the songs, how they were written and how the group's close personal relationships with each other often influenced their song writing and lyrics. We also hear how the Mamas and the Papas were often seen as a defining force in the music scene of the counter culture of the '60s.
With contributions from Mama Cass's sister Leah Kunkel, founder of The Lovin Spoonful John Sebastian, singer Judy Collins and fellow 60s group The Association.

The Art Of Now: Istanbul's Factory Of Tears
THE ART OF NOW: ISTANBUL'S FACTORY OF TEARS (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 21st June 2019
Writer Isobel Finkel takes us to Istanbul, where art and censorship are never too far apart. The state’s attempts to protect citizens from illicit sounds have taken absurd forms over the years, from the banning of all Turkish-language music from the radio in the early 30s to more recent attempts to control and interfere with Arabesk, the kitsch and mournful soundtrack of the 70s and 80s which was excluded from the radio even while it was so popular it made up for three-quarters of the country's record sales.
We travel to the IMC, a vast modernist complex in the heart of Istanbul's old city that once formed a production line for Arabesk; a community unto itself where agents, record producers and record shops all crowded in on top of one another. Musicians seeking to make their name in Turkey of the 70s and 80s would turn up and audition on the steps of the IMC, where they found fame, fortune and official censure.
Isobel interviews producers, fans and stars of the genre to find out what the state was so troubled by - and speaks to a new generation of musicians who are rediscovering and reworking these once-forbidden sounds in today's Istanbul.
Presenter: Isobel Finkel
Producer: David Waters

THE SEX PISTOLS PLAY MANCHESTER (320kbs-m4a/62mb/26mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 21st June 2019
Another chance to hear Stuart Maconie's assessment of the impact of the Sex Pistols' gig in Manchester in June 1976.
When the Sex Pistols took to the stage in Manchester's tiny Lesser Free Trade Hall on 4 June 1976, their performance arguably changed the world of music. Along with Woodstock and Live Aid, the gig has been acknowledged as one of the most influential live sets of all time, due to the power of the music and the effect that the show had on the handful of people who witnessed it.
For years the gig was shrouded in myth and legend, with literally thousands claiming that they were in attendance. It has since been found that just 35-40 people could have been present - but they included some who would go on to form some of the most iconic bands of the time, such as the Smiths, Buzzcocks, New Order, Joy Division and the Fall.
