Elvis And Dewey: Red Hot And Blue - 2. Episode 2
ELVIS AND DEWEY: RED HOT AND BLUE - 2. EPISODE 2 (320kbs-m4a/66mb/29mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 7th December 2018
Paul Gambaccini continues the fascinating story of a pioneering disc jockey who played a part in the birth of rock 'n' roll in Memphis and early career of Elvis Presley.
A full two years before Alan Freed "discovered" rock 'n' roll, Dewey Phillips was playing rhythm and blues on WHBQ to an audience of black and white listeners. His zeal for rhythm & blues and country set the stage for both Elvis' subsequent success and the rock 'n' roll revolution of the 1950s. Significantly, Dewey captivated a huge white audience with previously forbidden "race" music.
Dewey was the first DJ to introduce an Elvis record on the radio in July 1954. On his Memphis radio show Red, Hot & Blue, he played an acetate of the first single That's All Right (Mama) cut for him by the owner of Sun Studios, Sam Phillips (no relation). Legend has it that Dewey played the song anywhere from seven to eleven times in a row and he interviewed Elvis that night.
Elvis always acknowledged his debt of gratitude to Dewey - not only for his first radio exposure but also for the influence on his musical development through hearing the exciting mix of blues and country records every night.
The programme includes extracts from Dewey's radio and TV programmes of the 50s and early 60s. Interviewees include Louis Cantor - author of Dewey And Elvis - who worked on Memphis radio station WDIA; Charles Raiteri - another Memphis radio veteran; Humes High School classmates of Elvis: George Klein and Jerry Schilling; and an archive interview with the late Memphis musician and producer Jim Dickinson.
First broadcast in 2009.

Archive On 4: The Three Day Week
ARCHIVE ON 4: THE THREE DAY WEEK (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 1st December 2018
Back in 1973, Britain was plunged into darkness as Prime Minister Edward Heath introduced a three-day working week.
Cities fell dark. Factories and schools closed. People, often wrapped in blankets, worked by candle and torchlight. At home, people boiled water to wash and children were sent to school with luminous yellow bands so they could be seen in the gloom. And Britain's three TV channels came to an abrupt end at ten thirty!
For decades, British politics was shaped, perhaps defined, by the events of the early 1970s, with the three-day week as the centrepoint. Now it seems almost unimaginable that this could have happened in one of the world's richest countries so how did it ever get to this point? Could Heath have done anything different? Michael White of The Guardian, then a young reporter, takes us back to those extraordinary days and charts the long-term political significance of the crisis.
Producer: Jim Frank.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2013.

Metal At 40
METAL AT 40 (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 20th November 2018
In 1968, Britain's first heavy metal bands were formed, transforming rock music around the world, forever. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple each had their own unique sound, but shared an approach that embraced "heavy" guitar riffs, powerful lead vocals and thunderous percussion. Since then, heavy metal has flourished and diversified, spawning sub-genres such as grindcore, thrash and death metal, ever eager to embrace extreme subject matter. Horror film actor and writer Emily Booth tells the story of the loudest, darkest form of rock, with the help of many of metal's leading musicians.

Music Extra - My Madonna
MUSIC EXTRA - MY MADONNA (96kbs-m4a/37mb/53mins)
BBC World Service broadcast: 3rd November 2018
With contributions from people Madonna lived and worked with during her formative years, this programme highlights the drive and determination that took a struggling, ambitious young dancer from suburban Detroit, with grand visions of one day becoming a club dancer in New York City, on a journey that exceeded her wildest expectations as she evolved to become one of pop music’s most successful icons.
This is the inside story of Madonna’s early life, from her restrictive Catholic childhood in Detroit, where she said she felt like the 'quintessential Cinderella', to her escape to the bright lights of New York as a teenager, her transformation from dancer to rocker to pop singer and the recording and release of her eponymous debut album in 1983 — the LP that introduced the world to Madonna and set her on the road to pop stardom.
Convinced from an early age that she was going to become 'a star', Madonna diligently crafted her stage persona over a number of years, driven by a search for love and recognition and fuelled by a childhood diet of disparate influences, all of which fermented in her mind as she experimented with a variety of creative outlets including dance, poetry, rock, disco and pop, before finally settling on a distinctive style which she was determined to prove successful.
Never once doubting her ability to achieve her goal Madonna possessed incredible self belief and tenacity as she doggedly pursued her dreams of becoming a megastar.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: TRACEY THORN (320kbs-m4a/98mb/42mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 18th November 2018
Tracey Thorn, musician and writer, is best known as one half of the duo Everything but the Girl. Brought up in Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire, she bought her first guitar, a black Les Paul copy, when she was 16 and her first band was called the Stern Bobs. Shortly after, she formed her own all-female band, Marine Girls, before moving to Hull University to study English. On her first night there, she met her future husband, Ben Watt, and they went on to form Everything But the Girl. Between 1982 and 2000, they sold more than nine million records and toured Europe and America. Despite their success, Tracey did not always enjoy performing live.
At 35 she left the pop world to look after her twin girls, who were followed by her son Blake. She took about seven years out to be a full time parent, but since then she has come back to song-writing, recording music and writing: her first memoir Bedsit Disco Queen was a best seller, and she has a fortnightly column in the New Statesman.
This year Tracey was presented with the outstanding contribution to music prize, at the AIM independent music awards.
Presenter: Lauren Laverne
Producer: Cathy Drysdale
Frank Sinatra - You Make Me Feel So Young

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: NILE RODGERS (320kbs-m4a/98mb/42mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 14th October 2018
Nile Rodgers is a Grammy-winning composer, musician, and producer. With his own band, Chic, he's been enticing people on to the dance floor since the mid-1970s with hits like Le Freak and Good Times. With over 200 production credits to his name, he has worked on many highly successful albums from Sister Sledge’s We Are Family to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance and Madonna’s Like a Virgin.
Born in New York City in 1952 to a teenage mother, he spent his early life immersed in his parents’ bohemian, beatnik, and drug-dominated lifestyle. Drugs played a part in Nile's life too from an early age, and he took his first acid trip with Timothy Leary at the age of 15. After learning to play the guitar, he got his musical break touring with the Sesame Street stage show and playing in the house band of Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, where he met bassist Bernard Edwards with whom he developed a productive musical partnership and went on to found Chic.
Following the Disco Sucks movement of the late 1970s, Nile and Bernard turned to production, and sprinkled their magic dust on Sister Sledge and Diana Ross. When Nile and Bernard went their separate ways in the early 1980s, Nile forged ahead on his own, working with, among others, Madonna, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Duran Duran.
Nile went into rehab in 1994 and has been clean and sober for the past 24 years and has received successful treatment for cancer twice. He won three Grammys for his 2013 collaboration with the French electronic music duo Daft Punk, and has recently released the first Chic album in 26 years.

The Casbah - 2. Episode 2
THE CASBAH - 2. EPISODE 2 (320kbs-m4a/60mb/26mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 8th November 2018
The Casbah: Birthplace Of Merseybeat celebrates the somewhat neglected and hugely significant venue where The Beatles enjoyed a residency prior to their later and more often recognised success at the Cavern Club. The documentary is presented by original Beatles' drummer Pete Best whose mother Mona both owned and ran the club.
The Casbah, a private members club in the basement of the Best family home, was distinctive in a number of ways having opened as a strictly Rock'n'Roll venue. The majority of Liverpool clubs in the late 50's having had roots in Jazz, Folk & Country music. It was also notable in that it was run by a woman, Mona Best, in an era when music/club promoters were invariably male. The documentary will explore the history of the club (decorated by The Beatles and now awarded Blue Plaque status) while examining the broader context of the boom that came to be known as Merseybeat.
Including contributions from Merseybeat newspaper founder Bill Harry alongside merseybeat veterans Mike Pender of The Searchers, Georgie Spruce (AKA Earl Preston of Earl Preston & The TT's), Howie Casey (of Derry & the Seniors-the first Liverpool combo to play in Hamburg and secure a recording contract), and Geoff Nugent (of The Undertakers). The programme also features the recollections of Casbah Club members and a fleeting, though noteworthy, contribution from Paul McCartney.
First broadcast on Radio 2.

Johnny Sandon & The Remo Four - Lies
The Beatles - P.S. I Love You
Lee Curtis & The All Stars - Let's Stomp

Doctor Who: Heroes Of Sontar - 2. Episode 2
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 22nd September 2018
The Time Lord is on the planet Samur, with three enemies after him. Nyssa hints at some intriguing secrets.
Peter Davison is the Fifth Doctor with his companion Tegan Jovanka played by Janet Fielding.
Planet Samur was once a peaceful haven. Pilgrims journeyed across the seven galaxies to meditate in the courtyards of the vast Citadel that spanned its equator. It was Samur's misfortune, however, to find itself situated on the furthermost frontier in the eternal war between the amoeboid Rutan Host and the belligerent, troll-like Sontarans...
Twenty years after detonating a bacteriological weapon over Samur, rendering it uninhabitable, the Sontarans are back: a select platoon of seven has landed here on a secret mission, carrying sealed orders given to them by Fleet Marshal Stabb.
The TARDIS has landed here, too, bringing the Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa into the second great Battle of Samur. Fighting not only the Sontarans, but mystical mercenaries... and a deadly, decades-old curse.
