Gregory Porter On Nat King Cole
GREGORY PORTER ON NAT KING COLE (320kbs-m4a/129mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 26th September 2018
Multi-award winning musician Gregory Porter presents a tribute to his idol, the extraordinarily powerful but underrated Nat King Cole, explaining why the legendary singer and songwriter was more than just a massive music star, but more importantly broke cultural boundaries with his political activism.
Gregory will explain how this mild mannered musician from Alabama, with a deeply religious upbringing, was inspired musically and politically by his parents. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother was the church organist, who taught Nat to love jazz and classic music.
As his music career progressed and he travelled around America he became inspired to work as an activist, following his own experiences of racism, especially in the Deep South.
In 1957 Nat became the first African American to host a variety show on American television, which created controversy at the time. Many fellow musicians including Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Belafonte, Frankie Laine, Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, Eartha Kitt and Tony Bennett performed for free in order to help the show save money, but the producers could not find sponsorship and The Nat King Cole Show only survived one year after which Cole quipped "Madison Avenue is afraid of the dark.”
Gregory will explain how once he earned enough money to buy a house Nat moved in to an all-white neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The Ku Klux Klan, still active in Los Angeles well into the 1950s, responded by placing a burning cross on his front lawn. Members of the property-owners association told Cole they did not want any "undesirables" moving into the neighbourhood, to which Cole retorted, "Neither do I. And if I see anybody undesirable coming in here, I'll be the first to complain." In 1956, Cole was assaulted on stage during a concert in Birmingham, Alabama, by three men belonging to the North Alabama Citizens Council, in an attempt to kidnap him.
At a fascinating time in US and world politics, Gregory will present a unique insight into an entertainer who was determined to use his success to change racial perceptions in America.

The Voices Of... Series 2 - Andy Partridge
THE VOICES OF... SERIES 2 - ANDY PARTRIDGE (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 31st July 2017
An intimate portrait of the songwriter, singer and frontman of the new wave rock band XTC, Andy Partridge.
Brought up on a council estate in Swindon, Andy Partridge's escape from the poverty of his working class upbringing followed a classic path - art and music. At 15, he enrolled in what he calls the 'art floor' of the local college - Swindon didn't boast an actual art college. Then, he discovered the magnetic power of carrying around his Dad's old guitar. He didn't even have to play it to find himself the centre of attention.
In the years that followed - and in the wake of the punk explosion - he tasted celebrity and success with his band XTC. His curious vocal style and angular compositions were distinctive and influential. XTC built a cult status with songs such as Making Plans for Nigel and Senses Working Overtime, as well as albums including the acclaimed Skylarking.
But Swindon didn't lose Andy for long, despite the lure of London and New York. He lives there still, now with his American partner. And he's still writing songs - including for the recent album by the reformed Monkees.
In this programme, he talks about the trajectory of his career and the 'art blood' that has consistently flowed through his veins.

ARCHIVE ON 4: TOMORROW'S WORLD, TODAY (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 22nd September 2018
Everyone knows the iconic TV series Tomorrow's World - and many of us watched it as it made predictions about the future. Was it correct in its assumptions and predictions? James Burke takes a journey through the archive, and explores the story of the past half century of technological development.
Tomorrow's World began in the "White Heat" of the 1960s - as science and technology began to promise a future previously unimaginable.
From the first orbits of the moon, to the first heart transplant; from the nuclear debates of 20th century, to the economic failure of Concorde; from robots to the internet - Tomorrow's World reported on it all. How did the show do it? And did it get it right?
To mark the programme's 50th Anniversary in 2015, James Burke - a reporter on the show from 1966 to 1972 - looks at how it dealt with the often huge changes that occurred in the time from when it was first broadcast, and assesses what it says about our ability to see what's around the corner.
Featuring Judith Hann, Michael Rodd, Maggie Philbin, Howard Stableford, Michael Blakstad and Dame Wendy Hall.
Producer: Polly Weston.

I'm Keith Moon, What's Your Excuse?
I'M KEITH MOON, WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE? (320kbs-m4a/129mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 8th September 2018
Phil Daniels remembers The Who's drummer Keith Moon who, had he been alive today, would have qualified for a bus pass.
His life was cut short after a prescription drug overdose on 7 September 1978. But Moon packed a great deal into his short life. As one of the documentary's key contributors points out, because he hardly seemed to sleep, Moon probably managed to pack an average lifetime into his brief spell.
This documentary tracks down contributors who were close to Moon at key periods of his life. Long-term PR man for The Who, Keith Altham, oversaw Moon's early career with the band and witnessed the - sometimes - fractious nature of the band's off-stage relationships. Moon's road manager, Peter "Dougal" Butler was a constant companion up until close to the drummer's demise. "Legs" Larry Smith was a friend who witnessed the tragic death of Moon's driver, Neil Boland. Small Faces drummer Kenney Jones had the unenviable task of replacing him on The Who's drum stool both during Moon's lifetime and after he died. All provide a fascinating insight into the workings of "Moon The Loon's" mind.
But possibly the most insightful voice is provided by Moon himself. Interviewed by Stuart Grundy in Los Angeles in 1974, much of the brief sixteen-minute recording has never been heard before and provides a poignant first-hand illustration of the troubled drummer's lifestyle.
Apart from featuring Moon's drumming and writing, his one solo album also gets a rare outing. And there are excerpts from his all-too-brief radio series, which was produced by the late John Walters. With those two minds in tandem, how could the result be anything but hysterical?!
The title of the documentary comes from the front page of a Melody Maker from the mid 1970s. In a picture featuring Moon and PJ Proby, the words emanate from the drummer's mouth in a word bubble. It first broadcast on Radio 2 in September 2011.

Music Extra - Rocking The Stasi
MUSIC EXTRA - ROCKING THE STASI (96kbs-m4a/35mb/49mins)
BBC World Service broadcast: 2nd July 2017
Did music help bring down the Berlin Wall? If that sounds far –fetched you may think again once you’ve heard this programme. Yes, there was politics, of course, but this is the extraordinary and moving story of how music helped change history.
Since the former East German Police, The Stasi’s, archives in Germany have opened; they are yielding more and more secrets. And one of the most remarkable to emerge is how the East German regime – and its police – were obsessed with resisting and clamping down on Western music.
In 1969, just a rumour of a Rolling Stones concert in on a tower block next to the Wall sent the East German Government authorities into meltdown. In the 1970s and 80s a bizarre alliance between East German punks and local churches was seen by the regime as a pernicious challenge. When David Bowie played a gig in the West, across the fearsome Wall, and listened to by crowds assembling in the East caused the Stasi no end of angst. And when the East German Government finally relented and allowed Bruce Springsteen to play in East Berlin in 1988, he used the chance to pump out anti-regime messages, seen as a hugely important moment in hastening the collapse of Communism there.
Chris Bowlby uncovers this unheard part of Cold War history. For the first time, we hear recordings from the Stasi sound archives of secret meetings in which Stasi chief Erich Mielke discussed the threat of punk and heavy metal.
Against the backdrop of a stellar soundtrack we hear from those who organised secret and illegal concerts in the East and from a former member of the Stasi who tried to stop them.
It is a story of obsession, now scarcely believable, and about the role that music played in the Cold War and the people who lived this first hand.
