BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 3rd January 2018
Smokey Robinson discusses his musical milestones with Matt Everitt in a programme first broadcast in 2013.
Even amongst the ranks of the greatest songwriters of all time, few can claim to have genuinely changed the world. Smokey Robinson can, both as a member of The Miracles and a solo artist. He's sung, written and produced some of the greatest songs of all time - including I Second That Emotion, Tears of a Clown and The Tracks of My Tears. As vice-president at Motown for nearly thirty years, he shaped the style and sound of the label and helped the racial integration of popular music by achieving huge crossover success.
Smokey discusses his early life and formative musical influences, meeting Motown founder Berry Gordy and the enormous worldwide success that followed. He also discusses the challenges he faced in the segregated music industry of the time, and tells the stories behind some of his best loved songs.
He also talks openly about the problems he faced in the mid-80s (both professionally and his own battle with drugs) and his creative rebirth - providing an incredible insight into the man Bob Dylan called "America's greatest living poet".

The First Time With... Series 6 - 6. Kim Gordon
THE FIRST TIME WITH... SERIES 6 - 6. KIM GORDON (320kbs-m4a/128mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 14th January 2018
Matt chats to Kim Gordon, formerly bassist, vocalist and guitarist with Sonic Youth, about key first musical moments in her life.
Sonic Youth are without doubt one of the most important alternative bands to have emerged from the American post punk landscape. In 1981 when they formed the musical world was divided into Duran Duran-type pop or upcoming guitars bands like The Cure, REM and Echo & The Bunnymen - Sonic Youth forged a third way as much informed by the avant-garde as by any rock music that had gone before.
And since their inception - bassist, guitarist and singer Kim Gordon was a key element in driving the band forward artistically. She trained as a visual artist, and her drive to experiment with sound helped the band establish themselves as a key influence on indie music - bands like Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine, PJ Harvey, Dinosaur Jr and The Flaming Lips all owed a huge debt to Sonic Youth. Also her position as an articulate woman performer in the mostly male underground music scene inspired countless other female performers.
She's also a film and video director, a writer, fashion designer and producer - more to the point, she's just cool.
Here she talks about her unlikely early musical passions (the soundtrack to South Pacific and The Parent Trap) early very dissonant days of Sonic Youth, her passions for Joni Mitchell, Chet Baker and Stan Getz, and her fascination with Karen Carpenter. She also chats about collaboration with Yoko Ono and the dangers of being in the studio with Courtney Love (Gordon produced her album Pretty on the Inside) and how her own artist background and the Warhol-centric New York art scene influenced Sonic Youth during their career.
Sonic Youth - Kool Thing
Hayley Mills - Let's Get Together
Astrud Gilberto & Stan Getz - The Girl From Ipanema
Herman's Hermits - She's A Must To Avoid
Joni Mitchell - Song To A Seagull
Sonic Youth With Lydia Lunch - Death Valley '69
The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog
Sonic Youth - Teen Age Riot [Blast First]
Carpenters - We've Only Just Begun [A&M]
Sonic Youth - Dirty Boots [Geffen]
Yoko Ono - Mulberry
Body/Head - Ain't

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 13th January 2018
In a programme first broadcast in 2013, Roy Harper shares his musical milestones with Matt Everitt, including working with Led Zeppelin, Paul Simon and Bert Jansch.
Since his emergence in the mid-60s, Roy Harper has been regarded as an icon of British music - not for having huge success, but for his beautiful, poetic lyrics and his unique guitar playing.
With the likes of Bert Jansch and Davey Graham, Roy helped forge the British folk scene. In 1971 he recorded his classic Stormcock album, combining folk, jazz and rock in a way that's still inspiring people today.
Roy recalls his rebellious youth and obsession with skiffle that led to the folk clubs of Soho, his friendships with Jansch and a young Paul Simon, recording Stormcock, and his collaborations with Jimmy Page. Led Zeppelin wrote a track called Hats Off To Harper.
He also details the story behind his classic When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease, the song that John Peel played when he announced on air that his friend and long-serving producer John Walters had died. Walters had been planning to play it at Peel's funeral.
Roy also talks frankly about his own personal battles with the music industry, the financial problems in the 80s that left him homeless, He discusses his remarkable comeback, which culminated with Man And Myth (his first studio album in 13 years) and how it feels to be cited as major influence by the likes of Johnny Marr, Fleet Foxes and Joanna Newsom.

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 2nd January 2018
Elvis Costello shares his musical milestones with Matt Everitt in a programme first broadcast in 2013.

He's produced albums of sneering post punk, lavish orchestral pop, country and western, easy listening, classical, Tin Pan Alley pop and jazz - and the thread that runs through all this is his songwriting skill.

THE FIRST TIME WITH... SERIES 6 - 2. TERRY HALL (320kbs-m4a/126mb/55mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 11th January 2018
Specials frontman Terry Hall discusses his musical milestones with Matt Everitt in a programme first broadcast in 2013.
As frontman of the Specials Terry Hall was totally at odds with other pop stars of the time. After leaving the band at the height of their fame in 1981 Terry went on to from Fun Boy Three and the Colourfield - before embarking on a career that's seen him work with Damon Albarn, Lily Allen, Sinead O'Connor and leap from style to style in way few artists do (or can). All while maintaining this deadpan sense of humour and his own unique vocal style.
Terry doesn't often do interviews, but in this show he talks about his early musical loves growing up in Coventry (Pinky & Perky and Edith Piaf - which says a lot about him), the early days and huge success of the Specials and the in-fighting and pressures that led him to quit the band.
He also discusses his passion for Patti Smith and Easy Listening, working with Albarn as a member of Gorillaz and his experience suffering a breakdown and the reasons for getting the Specials back together for their triumphant gigs in 2008 and his plans to start writing songs again.

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 4th March 2018
Matt Smith is best known as the eleventh Timelord in the BBC One series, Doctor Who. At 26, he became the youngest actor to take the part.
His future looked set to be in football: he played at youth level for Northampton Town, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City until a serious back condition ended his highly promising career prematurely. His drama teacher encouraged him to take up acting and he joined the National Youth Theatre and studied drama at the University of East Anglia. He played Lockwood in the National Theatre's touring production of The History Boys and was nominated for an Evening Standard Best Newcomer Award for his performance in Polly Stenham's That Face. He also appeared as a political researcher in the BBC Two parliamentary drama, Party Animals.
Despite being a surprise choice to play The Doctor in 2009, he became the first actor to be nominated for a BAFTA television award for his performance in this role, and has won two National Television Awards. When he left Doctor Who at the end of 2013, he appeared on stage as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho: The Musical.
In 2016 he took the part of HRH Prince Philip Mountbatten, The Duke of Edinburgh, in the Netflix series The Crown, and received great acclaim, leaving the role at the end of the second series in late 2017.

16 5 66 (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 14th May 2016
On Monday 16th of May, 1966 two of the greatest albums of all time were released. Through archive, interviews and music from The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, we tell the story of the music from that momentous day.
For the American music lover, the two albums would come to shape music history. Blonde on Blonde is considered Bob Dylan's magnum opus, while Pet Sounds is The Beach Boys' epic journey into the musical mind of Brian Wilson.
Fifty years on, we hear from those who remember that day - musicians who worked on the albums, and teenagers who saved up to buy the records but had a choice to make, Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde.
We hear of two lovers who danced in the kitchen to Pet Sounds. Wouldn't it Be Nice played as they talked of the future. On that day in 1966, Bob Dylan was playing in Sheffield, one of his forty or so worldwide shows. One Dylan fan remembers it like it was yesterday. The next day Dylan would play Manchester and be called "Judas".
One day, two musical visions.

Monty Python's Fliegender Zirkus!
MONTY PYTHON'S FLIEGENDER ZIRKUS! (128kbs-m4a/26mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 22nd October 2012
Roll up, it's Monty Python's Fliegender Zirkus! This is the extraordinary tale of when the Pythons went Bavarian.
German Comedy Ambassador, Henning Wehn, tells the story of how in 1971 the Pythons were flown into Bavaria, full of new original ideas for sketches, including pieces about the German artist Albrecht Durer, William Tell and The Merchant of Venice. They also adapted the popular Flying Circus Lumberjack Song into German and planned to sing it with the Austria Border Police Choir.
Only Michael Palin and John Cleese were capable of delivering lines in 'understandable' German. Despite extensive language coaching, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Graham Chapman were virtually incomprehensible. This may have added to the Pythons' trademark absurdity and surrealism, but was somewhat confusing to the German TV audience.
Realising this dream was becoming a nightmare, Alfred Biokek took the decision to make the second programme in English, with German overdub added later. It proved to be a major hit on German TV, but all concerned decided it best not to repeat the experience.
We hear clips from both programmes and Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Alfred Biolek, the man who persuaded them to take their comedy to Germany, talk about how they came up with the material for the German shows - and how life on set began to imitate a Monty Python sketch.

Chuck Berry: 40 Years On
CHUCK BERRY: 40 YEARS ON (320kbs-m4a/132mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 29th December 2017
Another chance to hear Anthony Wall's acclaimed profile of rock 'n' roll pioneer Chuck Berry, made in 1977, but not broadcast until June 2017 on 6 Music. Berry passed away in March aged 90.
Wall's poetic programme explores Berry's extraordinary life and music through exclusive interviews recorded in the mid-70s.
Chuck Berry was a founding father of rock 'n' roll, whose songs (Johnny B. Goode, Promised Land, Roll Over Beethoven and many more) have become standards, covered by the likes of Elvis, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
Chuck wasn't an easy character though, and rarely gave interviews. On the occasions that he did, he was generally less then forthcoming. Anthony Wall, longstanding series editor of the BBC television arts strand Arena, began his career as a radio studio manager in the 70s. He also moonlighted as the rock critic for the Morning Star and, in this capacity, interviewed Chuck twice and found him in a mellow mood. Thankfully, Anthony had the foresight to record both interviews in broadcast quality. Between his shifts on the Today programme, he lovingly wove these rare interviews together with Chuck's songs and quotes from other interviews he'd done with the likes of Chess label-mate Muddy Waters and rockabilly hero, Carl Perkins.
Anthony offered the programme to Radio 1. They turned it down, but asked for the raw interviews. Anthony told them that they could have the whole programme or nothing. They refused, so it remained on the shelf for forty years gathering dust until June 2017.
When Chuck Berry died, it occurred to Anthony that, since so little had been heard from the man himself about his extraordinary life and music, it was about time that the programme was finally broadcast. BBC Radio 6 Music was delighted to oblige.
