The Musical History Of Greenwich Village - 1. Episode 1

THE MUSICAL HISTORY OF GREENWICH VILLAGE - 1. EPISODE 1 (320kbs-m4a/131mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 20th September 2017

John Sebastian takes a nostalgic journey around Greenwich Village, New York, telling the story of a particularly creative period in modern music history.

John was born and raised in Greenwich Village and, while still at school in the early 50s, it became a focal point for a group of writers, poets, artists, and students known as the Beat Generation. Inspired by what he saw and heard around him, John became immersed in the folk and club scene that subsequently blossomed.

His skills on guitar and harmonica made him an instrumental component of the folk scene and he worked with Bob Dylan, Judy Collins and Tim Hardin, before forming the The Lovin' Spoonful in 1965 and enjoying success with hits like Do You Believe In Magic and Summer In The City.

The history of Greenwich Village is littered with influential names in contemporary music. John's journey highlights the important role it played in the careers of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, The Velvet Underground, The Kingston Trio, Richie Havens, Maria Muldaur, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Nina Simone, The Mamas & Papas, The Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Miles Davis, and the most famous resident to become a major musical star in recent years - Lady Gaga.

The soundtrack to this journey features some of the most evocative and famous folk, rock, pop and jazz music recorded by residents of "The Village". Contributors include Steve Earle, Jac Holzman, Rick Rubin, Lenny Kaye, Richie Havens, John Cale, David Bailey, Jack Douglas, Bob Gruen and Julian Lennon.

Arto Lindsay - Late Junction Mixtape

ARTO LINDSAY - LATE JUNCTION MIXTAPE 01.09.17 (320kbs-m4a/70mb/30mins)
BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 1st September 2017

Earlier this year the Brazilian-American musician Arto Lindsay released his first album in 13 years. Now he takes time out to select some of his favourite music from recent years for the latest edition of the Late Junction Mixtape.

Once described by journalist Brian Olewnick as 'sounding like the bastard child of Derek Bailey', Lindsay first emerged from the avant-garde No Wave scene in New York in the 1970s with his band DNA. Since then his music has tripped between abstract noise, electronica and bossa nova and he's become known for his studiedly naive guitar style. Over the years he has worked with many different musicians both as collaborator and producer, among them Caetano Veloso, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Tom Waits and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

For his mixtape he's selected songs that he's been listening to obsessively over the last year, the songs that have been wearing the needle out on his record player and draining his laptop battery. Recently he's been interested in the latest developments in hip hop, praising new artists like Young Thug and Future for their innovative pop production. Jostling for space on his mix are harmony singers from Bahia, a moving piece written by Lou Reed after the death of his friend the song writer Doc Pomus, and transgressive performance art from the early 1970s.

Produced by Alannah Chance for Reduced Listening.

Late Junction: Nick Luscombe With Golden Records 29th August 2017

LATE JUNCTION: NICK LUSCOMBE WITH GOLDEN RECORDS 29.08.17 (320kbs-m4a/206mb/1hr30mins)
BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 29th August 2017

Marking the 40th anniversary of the Voyager Golden Record, a sonic gift sent into space by NASA to transmit earthly music, sounds and languages to extraterrestrials. A committee chaired by Carl Sagan selected the contents of this "message in a bottle cast into the cosmic ocean", including bits of Bach, blues music, and Chuck Berry on the gold-plated copper disc.

Tonight the task is Nick Luscombe's. He will be speculating on what futuristic sounds we would send out into the universe were we to do it again now, as well as playing the best bits from the original Golden Record, including traditional music from Benin, Peru, and Australia, mariachi from Lorenzo Barcelata, and Hindustani classical music from Kesarbai Kerkar.

To help discuss and dissect the Golden Record, Nick welcomes Black Quantum Futurism to Late Junction. Made up of experimental musician Moor Mother and author/attorney Rasheedah Phillips, they are an afro-futurist force in music, film, and literature, with a special interest in time capsules and temporality.

Humanity's farthest and longest-lived spacecraft, Voyager 1 and 2 achieve 40 years of exploration this August and September. Though they have left the planets far behind and will not come close to another star for 40,000 years, they continue to communicate with NASA daily.

Produced by Jack Howson for Reduced Listening.

Somewhere within an area bounded by Zola's residence in exile, Pissarro's paint pots, Marconi's mistakenly Martian message receiver and the site of a Spurgeon sermon, lies a tract of boggy ground of which not even ardent foragers are aware.

It was whilst digging for peat on this land that my spade struck the metal box.

A box buried in the rich dark layer.
A box buried in the moine dubh.

On retrieving and opening what looked like an ammo tin I found it to be full of quarter inch magnetic tape.

Tapes full of invocation, evocation and magick.

FAC 501: THE TONY WILSON STORY - 2. PART 2 (320kbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 20th August 2017

Paul Morley presents the concluding half of FAC 501: The Tony Wilson Story to mark 10 years since the Mancunian broadcaster and cultural catalyst passed away.

On August 10th 2007, music mogul, impresario, Northern institution and professional motormouth Anthony H. Wilson died of a heart attack aged 57 at Christie's Hospital in Manchester.

Tony Wilson will always be remembered as the founding father of Factory Records, the man behind bands like Joy Division and New Order and creator of one of the world's most famous clubs - The Hacienda - as well as for helping to establish the scene that was Madchester and continuing that task with In The City.

Music journalist Paul Morley traces Wilson's life, from growing up in Salford right through to his last days suffering with cancer, including an exclusive interview with Tony months before he died, plus interviews with friends and family on how one man's passion and self-belief affected the cultural and physical landscape of the city of Manchester.
